Remember your first big tricks?

Post by Splint »

I thought it might be fun to share some old memories about hitting tricks we are extemely proud of or were proud of at the time.

I have a memory like a goldfish sometimes. There are probably well over a hundred tricks that I've hit in the last 9 years so I don't expect that I'd remember hitting them all.
However, I would think that hitting the main moves would have remained vivid. You know Butterfly, Paradox Mirage, Osis, Ripwalk, Torque, Smear, Stepping Butterfly, Ducking/Diving anything, etc. etc..... but no. I can only remember a few of those early learning experiences that at the time felt SO gratifying.

All of these took place in Denver.

Clipper.... I was kicking with a circle of people near the Tabor Center and a kid comes up seeing me do pendulums, ATW's and such and shows me some tips on Clipper. I let it go until he left and then I did nothing but practice that move until I had it down...getting the flipside took another several months. Being Flipsided at the time wasn's so important.

Pdx Whirl... In the same place near the Tabor Center I was kicking around by myself and practicing clipper > same pickup. After I had it down pretty well I thought, 'hey if I keep going around it with my leg and catch on my other foot then I've got a cool new move'. Of course I had no idea it had been invented already YEARS before. I stopped hitting it 2 days later because it hurt my knee too much.

Clipper set DLO... Out in front of Rock Bottom Brewery on the 16th Street Mall I was kicking with Daryl and a couple of other people and I was trying really hard to get a better stepping set. I was hitting Ripwalk, but it was really low and more like I a Scootwalk  . So anyway, I ended up bailing from a Ripwalk and BAM..Clipper Set DLO became a staple move.

Blizzard... Same day as Clipper Set DLO. I had been wanting to hit Blur ssssooooo badly from the first time I saw it. That was also part of the reason I had been working my stepping set that day. But, alas, that move was not mine on that day. So I was hitting Clipper Set DLO and going past it a couple times with my second Dex. Daryl points out that I should try a Blizzard. I wasn't to keen on it until he put in these terms "it's almost like a Blur". So Of course I wanted to hit it now. Sure enough after a few more tries I was nailing it. Funny thing is that I let that move slide once I started hitting Blur.

So those are a couple and I remember a couple more, but I've probably bored enough of you already.

Anyone else want to share?

I had hit this trick a few months earlier on some tennis courts playing with bob and john. I was pretty proud of it since it was the first trick I invented.

My most memorable trick is either clipper or diving whirl.

Probably diving whirl because i hit it for juan at my first big event in chicago.
There is always a bigger trick.

Go watch a vid. of Dylan Fry.

Pixie Ducking Flying Clipper

I was at a shred that ShredStylez hosted last year and I saw some one hit assassin, which is a trick that I despretly want to hit (and might now that I've landed some ducking mirages...), and decided to try pixie ducking. My biggest trick was a smear or Datw, and it was a big deal for me to link anything at all, but I managed to his Pixie Ducking Flying Clipper. Woohoo!

I don't know why that trick sticks out in my mind, I don't even try it anymore and don't think I'll even try it unless someone randomly gets posessed by a gophers ghost and asks me to hit it, but that the trick I remember.

Mine would definately have to be torque... i was just explaining to some of my friends what a troque was, but they weren't grasping the concept so i (totally not expecting to hit it, just wanting to show them the general form) did a demonstration..... well to my amazment i didn't hear the bag hit the ground, infact i saw it fly up in front of me. Well I ran about 3/4 the way down my street before i was to tired to run anymore and preceeded to fall on the ground yelling.... lol (keeping in mind this is back when i could only hit osis and butterfly as my biggest add moves). Definately the most memorable trick to date for me

PS Whirl is my most memorable... i really loved that move and all its variations, and could just picture myself on a video in slo-mo doing a nice big phat one
i finally got it start of this year, id been trying it like at the end of sessions for a few months, getting the motions better and better...
then Max Boucoiran came over from France for like 1.5 months or so, we played with him a fair bit and he gave me like 2 pointers or something, and a few minutes later i hit it! then again a few minutes after that :)

hehe you were already reaaaaally close to hitting it when I came to Oz. Do you have it down easy now?

I remember my first ripwalk vividly. The first time I'd seen that move on tape I'd said to myself something along the lines of "If I EVER hit this move I can stop my footbagging career right then and there knowing full well I would have reached the highest echelons of the sport". I finally managed to hit it a big snowboard/skate convention in Paris. I was exctatic! Oh and I kept on footbagging.

I also remember my first scorption's tail. That move was also a milestone. Back in the day (3 years ago or so), there were very few footbag videos available on the net. THE place to go was the video section on footbag.org. And Scorpion's Tail (video of Eric Wulff hitting it) was probably THE hardest move filmed... In Paris, this quickly was considered as the hardest move ever.. I hit it at the french open in 2001 (iirc).

pdx mirage, pixies, and whirls bring back fond memories also.

My most memorable move would have to be Paradon. Although I hit it while no one was watching I was so pleased.

My most memorable has to be the Double ATW. It's not my biggest trick but I had been trying it for months before I finally hit it superclean. I was so happy that I hit it and made it look so smooth (and I can still do that!)! It's one of the moves I can hit anytime, anywhere. :D
