What do you think is better for development?
I'm just wondering, if someone was to have a choice between practice regimes, one where they practice fewer times, but for longer at a time, and one where they practice more often, but for a shorter amount of time, which one do you think would be most beneficial to the person as a footbagger?
For example, say a person was going to practice footbag for 6 hours every week.
Would you say practicing for an hour, 6 days a week would be better?
Or would you say that practicing for 2 hours, 3 times a week would be better?
This is just general and could be different depending on how much time per week the person can devote, but in general, which do you think is better, more numerous shorter sessions, or longer session but not as frequent?

Well obviously shredding more is better, that's not the point of the thread.FlexThis wrote:Good topic!
So I pick none of the above and say it would be best to kick as long and as often as humanly possible.
The point was to determine whether or not it's best to schedule out limited shredding time (which most of us have) in longer sessions, fewer times over the week, or shorter sessions more often during the week.

The question isn't flawed at all. Obviously the best strategy to improve is to practice as much as possible, that's not really the issue of discussion. If you'll notice, the subject line says which do you think is "better" for development. Then the poll asks which of the two options is better than the other for development. I never asked what do you think is the BEST method for development, because that is obviously to practice as much as you can, as many days as you can.FlexThis wrote:Your question is flawed.
As I stated in my post, if I shred less but more often I spend too much time warming up, so that option is out. If I shred longer, but less often then my muscle memory has a more difficult time getting back to where I left off. So I won't be choosing that option either.
Let's get real for a moment. In my 7 years kicking I have found that the best way to train is consecutively over days. When I was kicking the most it usually went something like this:
Tuesday - 45 minute stretch and warm-up, Kick for 2 hours
Wednesday - 45 minute stretch and warm-up, Kick for 2 hours
Thursday - 45 minute stretch and warm-up, Kick for 2 hours
Saturday - 45 minute stretch and warm-up, Double Sessions 4-6 hours
Sunday - 45 minute stretch and warm-up, Double Sessions 4-6 hours
Monday & Friday off
Stretching and warm-up consisted of 30 minutes stretching while watching a gnarly video, then 2 add & 3 add drills until shred time.
It went like that for a good 2 years, and then college was over. Now a days I'm lucky to get 30 minutes a session, no stretching or warm-up, and maybe once or twice a month. So far it has been hard getting back, but I am slowly.
So I say get as much shred in as you can for the BEST possible DEVELOPMENT.
Thanks
Once again, I'm not asking if it were an ideal world and you had as much time as possible to practice what method would you choose. I'm asking, in general, out of a limited amount of practice time per week, what way is best to distribute the time - either in a number of shorter sessions, or a couple of longer ones.

I would say that many short 30-minute practice sessions would help your muscle memory. That also gives you a break, so you don't get as tired. That's what I *try* to do when practicing my trombone. Like, I'll do a session in the morning, one before lunch, and then one at night. I think that this would apply to footbag pretty well. I also think that each method could be "better" for different people.

I forgot to mention that I use that method because I kick alone. Granted, if you're going to be meeting up with others for a longer session, that would work better that way.unemployed769 wrote:I voted More sessions, but shorter time per session. Normally, I'll shred about 15-30 mins each session a few times a day. Its just easier that way when your kicking alone
I prefer long session for 2 or 3 days straight then a day off to rest and let muscle memory work. I'd say you need to be in pretty good shape to be able to have long sessions everyday without breaking yourself. Depends on what you do also, training spinning and ducking and such is much easier on you than training stepping or atomic for example.

i try to play long and often, but it depends on time i have, stuff i gotta do, energy etc
normally like two days, then one day off
i play for like 2-3 hrs per session, rather than a few times a day, cos i get too sweaty and dont want to have to have heaps of showers/wet so many pairs of shorts and socks etc
i need long sessions because a. i love it and b. i got so many concepts, drills, moves to cover, i need all the time i can get

As far as I know....
It is not good to train a muscle (or a group of them two days in a row)
because to improve the muscle it need some recovery (principles of supercompensation)
To new tricks you should not be exhausted, to improve your technique you have to have a low pulse, so you can get your energy from oxygen.
To find out what is the best way for your training schedule I try to take a look to other sports where the loads are a little bit similiar to shred:
For the physical load, footbag is very similiar to clay tennis ( time up to 20 seconds on average, short fast steps)
tennis players train two times a day ( but you have always some technical training which is not so exhausting).
Soccer players train about 5 times soccer practice and 2 times per week jogging or a full body workout in a fitness club.
I hope that I will get the best improvements by shredding 8 units a week.
one unit correspond 1.5 hour.
For example:
monday - free; tuesday- one unit; wednesday- 2 units; thursday- 1 ; friday-1; saturday-2; sunday 1 ........
Unfortunetaly I have to play tennis about three times a week so my shred time is more less, but I think this would be the best way regarding to the physical load of the sport of footbag.
the other part of the sport- the juggling thing I have no idea what is the best way to train this kind of your ability?
