Summer Clean Up

Post by Splint »

In order to preserve storage space and weed out a bunch of old garbage I did a mass removal of all the topics on the forum that have no been replied to in the past 20 days.

Quite honestly I thought I was deleting only those posts that had ZERO replies... period. However, it turned out to be ALL posts than simply had no replies in the last 20 days. Otherwise I would have chosen a much higher number of days.

My apologies to anyone who really liked some of their old posts, but at the same time there were a HUGE number of double posts and insignificant post and pure trash posts that were deleted and now poeple will get to sit on here and rehash the same old stuff like we would have anyway

Yikes! So much for maintaining an archive of previous discussions. Seriously, can you talk to Jer or someone and get a backup copy?

I'm sure it's possible, but it would probably require a Rollback. If it takes Jer a while to get back to me and even if he wants to do a rollback then it would take us back to everything before the removal and we'd lose everything since.
I'll check into it, but I don't really think it's necessary to keep an "archive" for the purposes of these discussions. Yes it's nice to go back and look at what some people wrote and all that, but like I said, everyone's going to rehash it all anyway.

The Janiwalker thread is "unrehashable" ;-] Maybe a http://modified.ca/footbagarchive/ site?

Yeah, but really...how often do you go back and look at those.

Anywhichway, I'll look into an archive format. Though I think we may have to ask someone else to host it.

The overhead on a server to run another PHPBB board is minimal. It should only use server resources when people are using it.

If there is a fairly recent backup, it should be possible to restore without losing everything since that backup. There might not be a straight out-of-the-box solution, but it shouldn't be to difficult. I would think that a little knowledge if SQL would be required, more likely is that there is a work-around posted on the web somewhere...

wont this actually add to junk posted, not help solve it? instead of people being able to go back and find info about lavers and stuff, theyll just have to post the same old topic again. maybe just a better search feature would make all the old posts more useful.

Actually, it isn't so bad if you are looking for something in particular (and know who posted it).

The Janiwalker thread was pretty excellent, if I may say so.

Yeah, I'm concerned about some of the posts that have spawned something new in footbag.
And there were some.
I'm worried about the historical aspect of what we may have lost here.

I just hope it was all backed up before it was deleated.
Comment in the BCS blog if you feel the need to.

With my little experience with PHPBB, here's my assessment of the best way to go about this:

It is fairly easy with SQL to get exactly which topics / posts / etc. were deleted. Since those are completely disjoint with the entries in the current database, it should be possible to take modified down for an an hour and to manually merge those entries with the current database.
