Suicide
Your thoughts on suicide... do you believe that people should have the right to take their own lives or not? Do you think that their decision to take their own lives is right/just?

I dunno - I think in about 99.99% of the time they shouldn't because they are in an unfit mental state to make such a decision (which is why they make the decide to kill themselves).
Perhaps if they were very strict regulations and set processes before it could happen - but until that happens (and I doubt it ever will) - then they shouldn't at all.
Unless you are talking about euthanasia - which is different in my opinion.

I agree with Jeremy.
I said it earlier in some thread, but I guess it fits here too. Pain and suffereng are a part of life. It's unavoidable, everyone experiences it. It can get real intense at points but you can't give up! You cant let pain and suffering control you to the point of ending your life.

Funny (well not haha funny) that you should bring this up. A couple of weeks ago an old friend of the family committed suicide for reasons that his family has decided to keep private (understandable).
So the question of what drives people to committ suicide has been in the forefront of my mind.
Quite honestly my personal feelings are that Suicide is most often the easy way out. Not in every case, mind you. I believe there is A LOT of pain involved for the person who chooses suicide, however, I believe it is the most selfish act a "depressed" person can committ (worse than self-serving).
In the case of a severe illness I can certainly understand wanting the control of when and where and how your life will end, and I believe it is that person's right to a peaceful painfree death if that is what they choose.
If a person does choose to committ suicide then I believe they should be allowed to do it as they see fit so long as it does not harm anyone else.
I Abhor suicide pacts or mass suicides and especially Fathers or mothers who kill their spouse and then their children because they are too fucked up to own up to their own bullshit and then chicken out or screw up when killing themselves. Those people, when caught alive, should be hung upside down with piano wire, get covered in grease drippings and dipped in a barrel of rats while someone rams a baseball bat up their ass and Marilyn Manson plays on the radio in the background

Yeah - to elaborate my views. I agree (or think I do) with Brad about euthanasia. If someone's life has degraded due to some kind of illness, from which there will be no recovery then I have no problems with that person ending their own life.
However if they are doing it for other reasons then I think they have a serious mental problem and should be forced to have long term help. 1 in 4 people suffer some kind of mental illness and I think it's a serious issue. I wouldn't punish people for their actions, but I'd want to make sure they are protected from themselves.
I think it's very hard to understand why someone would kill themselves unless you've actually experienced that desire yourself - so I don't really want to make judgements on people who do - except to say that in their minds it probably seems like the best option left to them.
I also think people generally try to take the easiest option in any situation because usally the easiest option is the best (although obviously not always - and this can lead to big mistakes).

i think everyone has a right to kill themself. there is no way we can regulate suicide.
"but you can't kill yourself! it's against the law!!"
but i do think it is the dumbest thing you can possibly do. if all else fails, run away and start a new life, get into a new sport, or make new friends. doing something DIFFERENT can get rid of depression.

I feel the same way about euthanasia, that's completely understandable.
Okay, you may think it's stupid or it's the person just trying to take the easiest way out, but isn't that what people do in most situations anyways? If people are unhappy with their life, then why should they have to live it? Is it fair to them that millions of people are much happier/wealthier than them for no good reasons except luck of the draw when it comes to what kind of life they have? Of course people can change, but it's hard in today's world. Just turning your life upside down isn't easy to do I imagine. I don't think people should have to go through their life if they don't want to, it's just like dropping out of school. It might not be the best idea, but you should have the right... and I think they go pretty hand in hand with eachother.

do you keep every gift you receive? What about the gifts you really hate? The shitty sweater your grandma gives you that you know you'll never wear? Do you ever give anything away that was bought for you? Just because life is a "gift" doesnt mean we are obligated to keep it.

How is ending your life necessarily "throwing it away"? ...What about people who cause more problems for the world... wouldn't it be a "gift" to society for those people to end their life? And looking at life as a "gift" is just an optimistic way of explaining that life, like shit, happens... I don't view it a gift at all.

Your life, regardless of how you view it, is your own. You can do what you want with it. If you want to kill yourself, fine. You've probably hurt others now.
As for the terminally ill... If they have others, they should grasp life for as long as they can. But it's my own opinion.. .I'm so tired... goodnight

No i don't keep every gift I get, but for one thing life is a little more important then a sweater, and also not everyone keeps there life either, people do commit suicide. I am just being an Idealist and saying that everyone should keep there life and not commit suicide.do you keep every gift you receive? What about the gifts you really hate? Well those people that would help the society by commiting suicide would probably help society much much more by just changing there life styles to help other people...How is ending your life necessarily "throwing it away"? ...What about people who cause more problems for the world... wouldn't it be a "gift" to society for those people to end their life?

I believe the comment was made that it is ok as long as it doesn't harm anyone. This is a falicy.
Even a homeless man with no family that kills himself is causing harm. Harm to society, the coroner, the police investigator, the cleaning crew of the scene, forensics, etc...
There is no harmlessness in suicide.
Christianity dictates that one who commits suicide shall serve as a civil servant in heaven. Seems like a difficult task for an easy way out.

To be honest I haven't died yet, so I'll let you know when I do.
I'll be the one on Crossing Over trying to interupt all the time.
I would also agree with you that by my logic in my last post any situation could cause harm and does. So there
.
Everyone stop breathing, you are harming something...
It's true though as dumb as it sounds. But to what extent of harm would you consider truely harmful? Some people faint at the sight of blood, job or not I think seeing photos even of a guys head blown off would not be good for you.
For example:
My buddy, we'll call him Thomas Shoe (that's his name), had a job for 6 months killing rats in a sterile scientific environment. They would only allow him to perform that job for 6 months at any given time due to the psychological effects. And that was his job
.
As for suicide . . . Just say No!

Haha, funny stuff
. I'll be waiting for the voicemail once you find out!
Okay, there is no denying that it does harm on society. But should someone stop something that they want to do, JUST because it may or may not effect other people (which in this case, it would)? What's the point of having freedom and being able to make your own choices if you need to worry about other people more than yourself, and possible repercussions (sp?)? I know it's selfish to always think about yourself, but if you wanted to get in better shape, become healthy and build muscle but you are afraid that your partner, friends or anyone else that you are close to would get jealous and become insecure, would you not do what you want to do and what think is best (ignore the part about thinking what's best when you compare it to suicide;))?
"Suicide . . . just say no!" reminded me of one of those infomercials...
Suicide... ask your doctor if it's right for you!

In my opinion just because you commit suicide doesn't mean your going to hell, because if we all got what was coming to us then we would all go to hell, I know I'm not perfect so I'm just as bad as someone who commits suicide. I think you could still go to heaven even if you commit suicide.

This depends entirely on your interpretation of the scripture (how original huh?:). But I think the correct way to argue is that the bible does not condemn suicide. There are a handful of instances in the OT when people suicided and are not condemned, and even in the NT Jesus did what was virtually tantamount to suicide.m4d_h4cker wrote:Also, I thought that if you commited suicide, Christianity tells that you are sent to Hell? Hmm, that's what I always thought anyways.
People try and say that 'thou shall not kill' is against suicide, I don't think it is because it really means 'thou shall not murder'. I don't think it's possible to really murder yourself, because I think inherent in the definition of murder is non-compliance.
If someone is in a state where death is kinder than the alternative of unbearable pain, or a dependency on pain relieving drugs is so chronic that it makes life not worth living, then it should be a basic human right to make the choice. This is also the exception to the rule, and normally I don't have a problem with people being restrained from suicide because they're going through a phase that will pass (like what depression sometimes is), or maybe they're having a bad trip or something.

I agree with everything you said in the first two paragraphs, but not necesarily the third.
Sometimes it's not just a phase. And sometimes if it IS just a phase, there can be multiple phases. Sometimes just realizing that their life is just a cycle of bad phases over and over again could understandably be enough to drive someone to want to commit suicide. Think of it... their whole life has been shitty, or not as good as it could be. What do they have to hope for? Personally, I wouldn't enjoy looking forward to living the same type of shitty life I live. So I don't blame someone at all if they want to end their life. You can't expect someone to be excited or happy for the future when it looks so bleak. Why go through the motions of life when it's all just one big proccess where you strive for something that isn't there. You work your whole life for nothing, seems kind of pointless. So if we are talking about being a burden on society by killing yourself, let's talk about self efficiency then. Why put yourself through so much, for so little... when the end result is all the same anyways? It's pretty basic if you think about it. If this is what people are thinking when they commit suicide, then it's not just a phase probably. Or at least they don't think it is... which I guess they didn't live to find out.
