G-Unit Review (Reebok g6)

Post by Flipsider »

Hey, I took the time to reply to someone about the G-Units, so I thought I'd share with the rest of yous. I had planned on making a short video about them, but haven't had time.

> I take it you use them, so how do they really compare to Lavers?

IMO, they are not even comparable! Really, I have finally found my holy grail. They are getting more difficult to find now, so I ordered two more pairs as backups. They are pretty expensive though, about US$80/pair.

Ok, the most significant improvements are the instep (where you stall the clipper), stability, shock absorption, and traction (I can play on slippery floors now). The toe, feel, and weight are the same as Lavers, and nothing is worse about these shoes. I can't decisively comment on durability yet, because I've only been playing in them a few months, but so far I'm pretty sure they outlast Lavers.

> Do you mod them? If so, how? I noticed that they're leather, and I didn't think that leather gripped all that well. Do you just remove the outer layer of the leather?

While everyone was screaming "NO LEATHER", others were actually trying them, and in fact the Leathers turned out to be better than mesh after modifying them as you mention- removing the outer layer. The funny thing is it's much, much easier to remove the other layer than the inner layer (canvas) which most people do on mesh lavers, so everyone was up in arms against leather lavers for no reason, only because everyone else was saying it. :)

Now modifying the g6 is slightly trickier than removing the leather from Lavers, because there are more layers of material. There is the leather outer, then thin padding, then a lightweight canvas, and finally the layer you want to keep (inner layer). You can safely make a single cut, so it's not like you have to do it one layer at a time. Still, you do need to be very careful not to cut all the way through. FYI, on every single pair of Lavers I've modified (cutting out the canvas), I've cut through both layers in at least one place, and I've modified at least 12 pairs. However, I did not cut through the G-Units at all, so that should tell you how much easier it is.

Modifying the toe is the same as Lavers, except I laced mine a bit differently. Also, I went the extra mile on the tongue, but that's too difficult to explain to you by email, and especially since you don't have them in front of you to compare. I don't think the tongue mod is necessary though, I'm just picky about my shoes.

Hmm, I realize I didn't elaborate on the improvements, so I'll just say the most important one for me is the Instep. I never have clipper roll-out anymore, never- unless I'm just not in the right position. And all my sets are either improved or unaffected by the change, something that's pretty rare when experimenting with new shoes. In all, I feel like I'm a much better player in these shoes, and my form is even improved.

I can't say that everything will be the same for everyone- this is my personal opinion based on personal experience- but this time I am actually recommending them for anyone who doesn't mind paying a little more for better freestyle shoes.

I found the opposite to be the case with the g6. I wear size 9 Lavers and most brands, but my G-Units (also size 9) are about a half-size too big. I already got a backup pair, size 8.5, which feel perfect. I'd recommend, whenever possible, to try them on first. They are available at most Foot Lockers.

Any larger people you know who have tried them? I love my CT300's for their support, but I'd love to get a more Laverish shoe.

Yeah I had to Goo the instep. I hate it. I actually pulled them off so that I could redo them. I just ordered a new kind of shoe from Land's End though and they should be here next week so I'm going to try those out. I still think I'll have to Goo the instep, but hopefully not as much.

As I was reading, I was wondering about ankle support. Is that any good?

They cost about $160 in Australia!

That's about $129 US

Hardly worth it in my book. Especially when you concider how many pair of lavers one could buy. :x

Ankle support is something you DON'T want in a footbag shoe. You DO want lateral support and foot support, but you want your ankles free to crank.

Argh, that blows. They're $80 US in the US.

Hey Gareth, If you're seriously interested in a pair for less...you should talk to someone in the US that would buy them for you and then mail them to you in Australia. I've done that for Ole in Germany before with some lavers. for different reasons though...i can't remember exactly why we did it that way...maybe the WFA was charging too much to ship internationally or not shipping internationally? so he had them shipped to me and then I mailed them to him in Germany.

It's a good idea, Jane, but I'll pass.

As I'm pretty much giving footbag away, I'm only going to buy one more pair of lavers in the next week or so, and that should be it as far as footbag shoes are concerned.

As it is, I'll probably be using my new Lavers for going out and such. I still wear my heavily modded Lavers everywhere, anyway. They're brown and shitty (check the 'post you lavers here' thread soon), and look pretty scruffy to wear.
I'm 'almost' embarrised to wear them out... almost.

Thanks for the info Ellis, especially about the good instep! I'm pretty tempted to buy a pair of these even though I think my lavers are fine. One question though (if ya don't mind): I cut off the wings off my lavers to increase toe surface and decrease snagging, is that possible or neccessary with these?

hehe, those are MY shoes. :)

Yeah, you can trim the toe if you want- I did (after that photo was taken). The "toe surface" is a bit wider than Lavers.
