Jeremy Mirken's Footbag Blog

Post by Senor Grommet »

My goal is to hit every 5 add trick I can hit to every other 5 I can hit. That'll take years, and maybe it'll never happen, but I'll keep trying. I feel as if lately, I am pushing my body's limits to boundaries not thought possible just weeks ago. I am happy with footbag right now, but I'm sacrificing my schoolwork a bit to be so content. I guess its worth it tho.

Here is my up-to-date 5>5 add trick list:

blurry drifter>ps whirl
blurry whirl>ps whirl(bs)
plasma>ps whirl
fog>paradon swirl
blurry whirl> blurry whirl (bs)
ps whirl>ps whirl (ps)
janiwalker> ps whirl
janiwalker> superfly
blurry whirl>janiwalker
blurriest>blurry whirl
blurriest> ps whirl
blurrier>ps whirl
atomic whirl> ps whirl (bs)
frontside atom smasher> frontside atom smasher
witchdoctor> witchdoctor

I had a 3 hr long session tonight when I should have been prepping for a presentation this thursday, hehe. It was fun tho.

I tried to hit bladerunner>repeat, but i couldnt even hit one tonight :(

I tried to hit 3 slapping legovers, but I only hit 2 :(

I tried to hit slapping whirl>ps whirl but i got too close to my countertop and had to bail for fear of mid-air bodily injury :(

I did hit flip atomic ducking clip, drifter>pdx drifter>repeat, whirl>pdx whirl> repeat, and ps drifter :)

Oh, and one note about my footbag history:

At my first tourney ever, I met Sam Colclough and I saw him hit about 5 consec osi and I thought he was super pro. hahaha. But he was just a newbie like me! He introduced me to Bid Add Chad at that tourney. That was about 4 years ago. I also met Ryan Mulroney at that tourney. He was pretty cool.

Well, well, well . . .

today i hit whirlwind without a plant. It is my first time hitting it the stylie way, and it actually wasn't too hard. All that ps whirl practice is paying off.

Also, I hit 3 consec ps whirls, missing the fourth. I hit flip smoke again, which means that yeaterday's wasn't a fluke.

On a bright note, my place of living looks cleaner than it has in weeks!
Well, gotta run, my pizza is cooking and I can't let it burn.

peace!

Oh, I forgot to ass that I drilled flip pdx dlo in an effort to make flip fog a tad bit easier. I managed to hit it 5 times, and on two occasions hit it bsos (the pdx dlo, not the fog ;)).

Lastly, I was pretty close to dod swirl>ps whirl, but i couldnt quite control the height of the set after the first move. In fact, on one occasion, I hit the first move, and was prepping for the ps whirl, when I looked up at where the set was and it hit my frikkin roof 8O , which I'd have to guess is at least 8.5 feet high. I can't set a clipper that high if I try.

Blah, blah, I like footbag. I wanna get so good, but I cant manage to hit torques well, but then again, because I know that, I dont practice them much. Has there ever been a 7 or higher fearless run without a torque move in it? If not, I am a good candidate for the first to perform such a feat. Id rather not be tho

I love to read other peoples footblogs. I am glad that this section is here.

hey sorry Jeremy but the 7 fearless w/o at Torque move has been done by at least one other person, Johnny Murphy of NZ:

"New record for me, it goes a little sumthin like this...

pheonix-pdx legbeater-blurry whirl-ps whirl-spinning pdx whirl-scorpions tail-spin pdx whirl-spin pdx kick the table.

thats 6 unique fearless and 7 not. Would have got that last spin whirl if there was'nt a table in the road."

not too shabby!

I think on "the move" there is a combo that goes something like:

Flurricane>vortex>butterfly>blurry whirl>stepping whirl>blurry whirl>stepping whirl>ps whirl>spinning whirl>ps whirl>spinning whirl>scorpions tail>ps whirl>scorpions tail>ps whirl.

That's 8 fearless at the end (6 unique). I bet you can't guess who hits it...

Its been a while since ive updated b/c i hadn't played in a long time. here are some recently transpired events, and some still transpiring:

1) I took my last final of the first academic school year of my graduate program. I am glad to be done with it! now i can relax and stitch some people's footbags. (No, i'm not selling, just "catching up")

2) I now realize that i will bef ree of responsibility while the worl championships are happening in montreal, but it still seems as If i will not be attending this year. I guess spending the money right now is just not worth it to me. I sure wanna know everything that goes/went down tho.

3) Today, I signed the lease on my new apartment. it is 900 sq feet, as compared to the 500 sq foot piece of trizzash in which i am currrently situated. Even better, the rent for this 2 bedroom apt is only $689 per month! And it is in the nicer part of the city, with a sweet mountain view. Anyway, Im really happy about that, and whats even better is that my gf is going to be living with me this next year. I dont really know what this will mean in terms of my footbag progression. Will I skool as much? not sure. I may play less frequently (still weekly), or I may become way into it ad be motivated by her presence. Either way, my videos will no longer take place in my small, cluttered white kitchen. I am moving to an upstairs apt so wont be able to shoot in there either . . .We'll see.

4) I had a footbag session today for the first time in about 5 days or so. I hit a lot of cool things, and I was happy. My shred got better as the session wore on. Right at the beginning I hit a flip pixie ss drifter (catacomb?) for the firast time, which was cool. Then, a bit later, I hit my first flip phoenix, about which I was also excited. I was able to hit both sides pixie paradon, barfly, pdx eggbeater as well as symp whirl>pdx whirl bsos. Near the end of my session, I started to skool drifters. Finally I broke the 10 mark, hitting 12 and dropping on 13. It felt nice. Then, I broke my consec pdx drifter mark as well, hitting 3 and narrowly missing a fourth. that was bomb-ass too. Then, I skooled blurry drifter for a few minutes. Finally to close out my session, I said to my gf, "okay, Im gunna hit blurry drifter to ps whirl, a 5 to 5." On my 5th attempt at this combo, I hit: blurry drifter>ps whirl>ps whirl>ps whirl. It was my first 4 contact fearless run and it was pretty sweet, even though he last move wasn't unique. I was really happy about my game, and it was even cooler that my gf saw it happen. She hadnt seen me footbag in about 9 months.
5) Now, m goal is to hit 5 fearless, or another few 4 fearless runs, AND to have at least 5 different 5>5>5 combos by the end of the summer. Right now Ive hit 3.
6) Thats it. thanks for reading. now go skool some flipside tricks!

Nice stuff Jeremy. Drifters are super style, they are a nice break in rhyhtm to the LOTS OF SHUFFLE runs we see left, right and center.

For all of the non-worlds attendees this year:

recently, ive still been skoolin drifters, and here's what Ive hit:

-my first Lotus (spinning p drifter)
-blurry drifter bsos
-15 consec drifters (my record now)
-5 consec strong p drifters, 2 (almost 3) consec p drifters flip
-nuclear ss drifter (first time)
-ducking pdx drifter a few times now (w/o planting)

for B_Man:

If you want to keep playing footbag, you need to be smart about it. Dont go throwing a tantrum because you pushed your body too hard and are suffering the consequences. Us "normals" dont have 3 hour sessions everyday, which is why we dont get massive shin splints. Also, us "normals" stop playing when we feel pain rather than playing through it and risking more severe injury. Use insoles, shorter sessions, avoid tricks that are hurting you.

Nice stuff Jeremy :D

Let me first say that I wrote that post in frustration and anger and many of the things I said were exaggerated. However, some things weren't. I don't think I pushed myself too hard, because quite frankly I know I can push myself harder. I've done it before, countless times, without the pains I suffer now. I've done it before I even got into footbag, with no such consequences, so whether I pushed myself too hard or not is (to me) out of the question. Perhaps I was just pushing myself too hard on the right (or wrong) trick which so happened to leave me the way I am. Also, there are many people who play through their pain when they aren't supposed too. It's not smart, but people do it. Read Ken's footblog and you'll see. I have paid 30 dollars for sport insoles, which I modified so that they would fit my lavers. They worked well before, so I believe it is only the tricks I was performing that is the problem. Shorter sessions is exactly what I've been doing. Instead of 3 hrs a nite, I cut it down to 1.5 - 2 hrs .

But I appreciate your responce Jeremy. Sorry to have somewhat taken over. Take care man :)

GOLF

Post by Senor Grommet »

Today I played golf on an 18-hole course for the first time in 5 years. It was soo crazy and initimidating. ANyway, I drove the ball better than I ever have before:16 of 18 tee shots were about 230-240yds and on the fairway. Unfortunately my short game sucked major ass. I had 43 putts. I shot a . Overall, I was quite pleased with myself.

Yay golf! Footbag is a lot easier.
