Worlds 2006 to Japan?
Worlds 2006 to Japan?
We all know worlds 2005 will be in Finland, but I just read in Ken's blog about japanese scene and all and I think they'd maybe be ready for worlds the year 2006. It'd be so good for the scene and really exotic for us all. Then these competitions would really be world championships. Well I don't know much about the subject or anything, just wondering if someone here knows better than me.

I think its a great idea. I've wanted to visit Japan for a long time. I also imagine that it might be good for the Australian and New Zealand footbag scenes. What do you Southern Hemispere shredders say? Would getting yourselves to Japan be easier/cheaper than going to Europe or North America?
And speaking of North America, I'd guess that Japan might be an easier trip than Europe at least for the West Coast kickers. I don't really know, though...

I think Japan would have to show a real comitment to putting it on. I 'm not particuarly fond of worlds outside of the US but thats because I'm an ethnosentric closeminded American 
But if the host club shows its got the gusto to put on a massive event then let it be. We all know how unorganized 02 worlds was until near close to the event. I'm pumped that the Fins are already makeing worlds plans!
On a side note I think each country should have a nationals and any money raised there should be spent sending the top three routines and shrec 30 to worlds, but again I'm a sayer not a doer so blahhhhhh

Although it would be great for Japan to hold Worlds, I'm thinking that it would be hard for alot of people to get to Japan, lol. I may be wrong, but I always thought that it's pretty expensive to go there. But maybe that's just from my geographical location.

If the scene continues to grow, I would be all up for the trip to Japan. I have some relatives there , and I would love to visit them, and go to Worlds. If you've never been to Japan, you're missing out. The nicest people are over there, and it has the potential to be one helluva Worlds event. + you get to see the technology over there years before your hometown will be familiar with such things !

I don`t realistically see Worlds in Japan as feasible anytime soon. In no particular order, here`s why.
1. Housing costs. If Worlds were to be held in Japan, the only place with a big enough scene capable of running it would be in Tokyo. Housing in Tokyo is prohibitively expensive. We could try and counter that by having footbaggers stay at Japanese footbagger`s houses, but this also isn`t very realistic, since most shredders in Tokyo live in really small apartments, or with their families. Beyond that, it would be a logistical nightmare, and not all Japanese footbaggers speak English.
2. Flight costs. Last year, most of my worlds expenses went into my plane ticket. Once I was in Prague, everything was dirt cheap. With Japan, most people`s plane tickets would be pretty expensive. Then, once they arrive in Japan, everything else will also be very expensive.
3. Distribution of top players. Up until last year, Worlds was always held on the North American continent. The reason for this, was that almost all of the best players in the world lived there, and so it was the cheapest, most convenient place to hold a tournament. Recently, the European scene has exploded not just in size, but also in skill level. Holding Worlds in Europe last year was feasible, because there were enough footbag players (and top level players) in Europe that it could legitimately argue that it would best serve a large chunk of the footbag community by having the tournament in Europe.
At the moment, the Japanese scene is pretty large, but not large enough (or skilled enough) to justify inconveniencing such a large percentage of the footbag community to pay for an expensive plane ticket, and then expensive housing once they are here.
I will probably come back and edit this. I personally would love to see Worlds in Japan, but economically it doesn`t seem feasible, especially given the average income of most footbag players. Maybe, if I continue to think about this, I will change my mind. But at the moment, Worlds in Japan seems very unlikely.

Yeah I think Ken is the person to listen to on this one. I would love to see it, but I don't think it would really get the numbers, and it would be hell expensive which would probably ward a lot of people off. It would be really fun though, for the people who could go/afford.

Personally I don't think Australia would work anytime soon. We have a very small and spread out scene. Melbourne has the most players - with about 8 players. We also have very little experience organising tournaments to that size and it costs about $1000 US for a return trip to Australia from North America.
If you really want to hold the 2006 worlds in the southern or eastern hemispheres I'd suggest New Zealand. They seem to be very capable of organising excellent tournments and have a much closer and bigger playing base.
Ultimatly though, I don't think we'll see a worlds in Australiasia until there are either equal amounts of players as their are in both North America and Europe or their is enough money in the sport to pay for the best players from those places to cross the pacific.
It would be stupid to hold a "world" championships when only half the top players in the world could actually make it.

My opinion on why it's not feasible, two words:
TOO EXPENSIVE.
Tokyo is THE MOST EXPENSIVE CITY ON THE PLANET. I am seriously not kidding. And this is coming from someone who has been working for 5years, I don't see how this could work out for the average under 18yr. old footbagger who is still in school/university. It is a shame because Worlds in Japan would absolutly ROCK.. but if you're like me and find that Worlds in Montreal is already pretty expensive, you would not belive what it may come to if it were held in Tokyo.
That's also why Prague was a very well-suited host-city imo.
