advice: faster spinning

Post by alex »

I have noticed several things by watching Felix Zenger, Ricky Moran, and Allan Hagget (shredders with very quick spins). When they spin they all have very straight posture, and seem to spin by rotating with their shoulders, if that makes sense. Anyway, I have tried this and while it feels different then how I normally spin, I have not noticed that it makes me spin faster. Does anybody know any tricks that when praticed will specificaly help a person spin faster? Or any other tips for that matter? thanks

Make sure you set, then spin. This ensures a straight up set. If you try setting while spinning, the set will normally go haywire away from you. Remember, set, then spin.

Also, your head should be the first thing to spin, followed by your shoulders, then everything else below. When you spin your head first, you spot the bag earlier meaning your body will follow and you will be in position already to do whatever you need to do.

So, set, spin, head, shoulders (it will all come naturally in a little while)

Hope that helped.

Just a tip. Take two 5lb weights and hold one in each hand and spin. Do this until you can feel the balance and the small muscle groups starting to work. The key is to spin with power and speed. This is how bigger tricks come in. If spinning clipper is hard, then try this method. Also spinning takes a certain rise and fall action that must be dialed in. If you spin and your body is in the same position, then your doing it wrong. Rise up then spin and then lower your body to stalling position and repeat. Hope this helps,Richie

This sounds like an interesting idea. So you are saying that by practicing a simple spinning trick (ex:spinning clipper) you will gain more strength in the muscles that both rotate and stabalize you? I'm guessing this helps not only for regular spins, but also allows you to build up to double and inspinning tricks as well?

Spinning is the one concept that seems to evade me every week of every month, I can't get it down. I usually pick things up relatively quick, but this is killin me. Sometimes if you are moving to much or aren't setting the bag straight up, use a referance point on the ground. EX : Set the clipper from the crack on a sidewalk, or the seem of a carpet, and when you come back, you should try to land in that same spot. Something else you could do, is to mark a big + on carpet with 2 pieces of tape, that would serve as a grid to keep track of where you're moving.

Edit : more on topic, I completely notice that the faster you spin, the faster you spot the bag, and the more controlled the move will be. Take anyone that is great with spinning variation moves, they spin very quickly, spot the bag, and have more time to balance out and nail whatever they want out of it.

Ok hear me out.
I can spin very fast (double spinning clipper/butterfly/mirage/osis pretty close to triple spinning...) do NOT set then spin. If you want to spin fast, you must start spinning BEFORE the set. That means cranking your shoulders around while you are still delaying. look closely at Vasek's double spins.

i also found when learning spins that if u put one arm up in the air, you spin faster.. dont ask me why. i think Dan Ednie told me this... so say its a spin set from a right foot clipper, you put ur right arm in the air as u spin away from the bag
i dont do that much now because my strong spins at least are getting alot better and im doing some spinning moves (mirage, double down, ps whirl hehehe)

Agreed. Granted I only do single spinning moves, but I find it helps a lot to already be spinning as you set up the bag.

Therefore, you need to make sure your clipper is straight and flat even when your body is twisted, just so you will have a good set.

I am quite sure that Vasek means to set and then spin. I remember Honza talking about this exact topic. If you saw Vasek set after starting the spin, then he screwed up, because it's not his intention. They even have a word for spinning moves where the spin starts first- it's 'froggy', and not clean.

Yes this has been brought up: if your upper body starts spinning before you release the bg, is it clean? That's up to debate, yet it does help you spin a lot faster.

I think it is fine to start spinning with your upper body (head > shoulders) before the set, the problem is when you release the bag in a frigidosis position.

I find that I spin a lot faster, if just as I release the bag, I turn my head/shoulders and spot the bag right away as it is leaving my foot. Once your upper body is already twisted and you are committed to looking at the bag, your lower body is a lot easier to twist into the right place. Also, try to set the bag just behind your same side shoulder.. If you set it in front of you, then you have to spin further and it is harder to spot right away.

Spinning of course requires hours and hours of practice to get just right. I hated spins when I started playing footbag... it seemed so much easier for me to learn shuffle combos then spinning, but now I love spins... they are such an important and cool concept.

I think i meant don't try and turn your lower half before setting the bag. I agree with your statement.

The more you move your head without focusing on something, the more dizzy you will get. Practice spotting the bag right away and focusing on it while waiting to do the next component. This makes your head only have to turn fast at the beginning of the spin and it takes much of the dizziness away. Nate is really good at spins and can do many of them both ways i.e. switch directions via inspins or spinning same side the whole time and then continue into a run seemingly unaffected.

Practice makes perfect.

I don't know what to do.....
As soon as I do something similiar to a spinning motion I set the bag against my upper body. Even if I hardcore-seperate the motions.
Sounds like I have to shool my clippers, but hey, I'm shooling my ss clippers since a 3/4 year now and am able to do 20 consecutive clippers without moving my support leg (not to mention swirls whirls and drifters, which also need straight sets).

what shall I do ?
shall I just wait till I get it ?

I don't have any tips. Just to say that spinning is my nemesis. I can hit so many spinning moves, including double spinning osis on one side and scorpion's tail both sides.

But it is so inconsistant. One minute I'll be hitting whirlwind, the next minute I'll drop a spinning clipper. I have no idea why it's so inconsistant but suspect it's a mental thing. The only thing I can suggest is lots and lots of practice - that's what I do and I think it's helping...
