I'm going to worlds with a bunch of US dollars, but a few bag makers what the money in Canadian dollars. Is there gunna be places around where I can change it?

Take it to a local bank there. Just ask and say I wanna exchange this american cash into canadian cash.

of course there is. I can't give you an exact address but there's always places were you can trade money in for the country money. You should just ask some people around you. a lot of people come from the U.S. that are exchanging in bills.

You can almost certainly go into a larger bank near you right now and they should have a currency exchange so you will have it all ready when you get to Montreal.

I'll be offering a currency trade program. My rate goes like this 20 american $'s go for 5 canadian $'s.. I know it doesnt sound fair right off the bat, but every transaction comes with a free signed photograph of me, and if thats not priceless I dont know what is.

there are little exchange booths all over montreal... in downtown montreal there is probably one every second block.

That's what I'm doing, I'm just going to take my money, and when in Montreal, take it to a currency transfer place. Like Cclaudia said, they aren't hard to find, and usually it's like a gas station, if you look around enough, you can get a better transfer price compared to others.

It's always nice when you transfer your money, you give them 20, you get more back, but of course everything costs more, but it feels good giving your money to someone, and getting more back.

montreal really isn't THAT expensive, especially if you're transferring your money from american dollars.... or from any other currency for that matter. but what might through you off, is the TAX...an additional 15% on virtually everything is quite the "female-dog".
i'm quite the cheap person, so i usually find everything i want for good prices... you just gotta know where to go...and since you'll all be tourist -- expect to be ripped off

..... or just ask a montrealer and they'll tell you where all the cheap thrills are.

you can get your taxes refunded from a 50.00$ or more purchase...so keep your bills if you buy anything for 50 or more.
oh... and no matter where or what you're eating you can get a poutine with it

Here in France you can pay for mostly ANYTHING over 10$ by credit card. Well we call them credit cards, but they're actually what americans call debit cards (we have very few 'credit' cards like you do in the US). I'm going to the bank today anyway to get some Canadian dollars just to not be caught off-guard when I arrive though.
Could a canadian from Montreal tell me the average price for

- a beer in a bar (23cl / 33cl / 50cl)
- a meal in a fast-food restaurant
- a pack of cigarettes (say Malborough for example)
- a 10 min cab ride

Do most ATMs accept VISA cards and are they open 24h/7 ? (this was SO not the case in Tokyo where ATMs are mostly in banks and open during office hours)
