First night out on the town

Post by Splint »

Okay this is kind of shitty, but also cool and seriously funny.

The shitty part:
Last night was my first real time kicking out in my town...since high school (11 years ago). Having lived back here the last 2 years you'd think I would have gotten out and done this already, but there are really no good flat places in town to kick so we usually kick on the college campus or at my house.

The cool part:
We found a place to play outside of a Law Office which is conveniently located next to a towny bar.
We played for about 2 hours or so and even though town was kinda slow on a Wednesday night, we attracted a lot of attention. People crossed the street or changed direction just to come over and watch us play. We got tons of props. My friend Benny probably had the best session with enormous string length that played to peoples amusement. He was taking his strings off the curb and into the street and back again. It was fun.

The funny part:
People came out of the bar to smoke (smoke free NY in bars and restaurants) and they enjoyed watching us. The best bar spectator was this old grandma...you know the one...she walks around with her stringy gray and silver hair pulled up tight in a knot with a hot pink hair tie. She wears those eighties style bug-eye glasses and walks around in her bright blue nightshirt with a line of flowers embroidered across the chest. She carries that white handbag from 1971 that she's taken immaculate care of even though she packs it full of crap. To top is off she talks with that hi screetchy old lady voice that's loaded with liquor.

So anyway, she was simply shocked by what we were doing and absolutely infatuated with watching Benny. She only said about 6 things to us, but repeated 4 of them over and over and over in that crazy cackling voice;

"That's Amaaaazzziinnnnggggg!!!"
"How do you DO that?"
"What country are you from?"
"FOOTBAG!!!"

Nothin' like having a fan. :D

I guess some time its a good thing to live in NY. How many people were watching like 30?

Over the course of the session I'd say we had 30 or more people stop to watch or comment. Usually in groups of 2 to 4.

I don't play better under pressure. However I did okay last night.

I play alot in this semi-busy area. Theres always people walking around and watching us, but its funny because there are these drunk hobos that say the same exact thing as that old lady.

That's a really cool story Brad, I'd love to have people come up and watch us shred :(. You're lucky you can attract people that well!

That's why we have to start playing at places like downtown Halifax.

We'd attract a little more attention there than Colin's dead end street.

I've been saying forever that we need to do that. Cole Harbour Place, the waterfront, Mic Mac Mall is always fun. Let's do it...

Ever have a problem with authorities Brad?

When me people say that to me, my most common repsonse is:

"I just spend less time, than you, sitting on my ass in front of the TV."
