Setting pixie higher

Post by marc »

I just recently hit pixie legover. The problem is, however, I'm having trouble setting the bag high while doing pixie. I need to be able to set it higher than I can now in order to do other tricks. Does anyone have any advice?

kind of jump with your support leg at the same time as doing the set.
Hopefully back one day.

practice pixies to death. and that little extra jump with the support leg
helps to. but as you school them more, they will get more and more
explosive. just make sure you set very fast, dex very fast and get your
foot back on the ground very fast.

That's the first time I heard about the jump withe the support leg...hmm. I think I'll try it; I've been trying phoenix but my pixie set stops at about shoulder height. Maybe this will help! Thanks!

Stay as much "OVER" the bag as you can. Not extremely, but stay on top of your pixie. The farther away you are from your pixie, its generally going to stay lower. If you stay on top of your pixies, setting it close to your body, it will both go higher and straighter, thus, making any downtime components easier.

This will especially help when trying pixie ducking...

Hope that helped.

I thought it wasn't always about "fast fast fast"... look at Lon! Maybe it would help to be "fast fast fast" in the beginning stages, but after a while, it comes down to tighter dexes in my opinion.

I don't do the hop either, and I can hit pixie ducking moves all over the place. The key is not a super fast dex either in my opinion.

When you start the set, turn your foot inward slightly so that your knee is also facing slightly inward. Keep the bag right under you, because the goal is for the bag to dex around your knee area. Dip down before you do the pixie set so that you get a little extra spring for a high set. Get your body momentum into the motion as this adds extra height. Then with your knee pointed slightly inward, set the bag, and your knee should want to turn the other way, so the pixie set should come naturally after a while. Make sure to keep your foot as close to the ground as you can. The actual motion is very slight if you want to make it a tight dex. If you lift it too much, then you will of course 'the' the set. As the dex is completing, drive your foot down to the ground.

To prepare for pixie ducking, I would practice toe set ducking. You really need to find the leg and body momentum necessary to get a high toe set. It is more about pushing the bag up, and not flinging it up with your toe.

eh... I thought it would be easier to explain. :?

My pixie sets got much cleaner and stronger after I practiced trying to duck my pixie sets. Once you can duck them, you should be rockin...

I do the HOP HOP HOP

LOL

Perhaps...but the main thing that makes my pixies go higher is the balance over the bag and the position of my leg (which may contribute to speed). My pixies have never felt really that quick, except for moves which i have to really go fast on (pixie paradon, sailing blah).

The hop is just a natural thing. I don't know if it detracts from style or adds, but i find it really hard to control a pixie, or even get any height from it without the hop. Personal preference imo, but i think the hop helps the bag definatly go higher (especially in instances such as pixie ducking)

I have cut the buckets out but these days I can duck a pixie set in any shoes - even my slippers!

Basically you want to knee as high as you can and the do the dex while you are bringing the foot back down. This will mean the dex is up high around your thigh - very clean and really easy to get lots of height - watch vids of Ales to see what I'm talking about.

you know how you can bring the bag off your toe with a "flick of your ankle" instead of just bringing your knee up? well for pixie ducking i flick my ankle very fast while i bring the knee up. i've gotten my pixie sets about 2 feet higher than my head because of that.
