Wednesday, June 30th

Well what can I say? Not much of a session today. Due to the heat (it went above 30 degrees outside, and later rose to 29.4 degrees indoors :? ) and a very bad nite I felt too restless and impatient to do much except get bored quickly. Ah well, another day of rest for my shins.

*** Session ***

Mostly worked on two basic tricks - Osis and Whirls. Then, after repeated Blender failures I got angry and called it quits.

Session Time

2:30 pm - 3:15 pm

Session Highlights

5 consecutive Whirls (ugh, pathetic)

-=( Summary of the Day )=-

Aside from the heat, the restlessness, and the not-so-well session it wasn't too bad. I hung out with my best bud and we hit the pool. Afterwards we went to his place and endulged in some UT 2k4 and Mastermind. Good stuff.

Thursday, July 1 - Happy Birthday Canada!

It was a good day for shredding. I had the energy and the drive to keep me going for all afternoon. I tried a few atomic sets today. The first few didn't feel too bad, but after about 3 I started to feel a bit of pain so I backed off on that. Also while doing dishes, I was pondering about my game and came to realize that my weakside is actually almost on par with my strongside except in 5 aspects - pixie / fairy sets and double dex tricks (Barfly, Barrage, DDD mostly) are the most noticeable aspects while stepping sets and spinning ducking are just lacking a tiny bit. It feels good to be both sided!

*** Session ***

Went over my foundation tricks for some time (Butterfly, Osis, Whirl & Pdx Mirage) before drilling Drifters and the like once more. I'm seeing some good progress coming out of it now :D.

Session Time

1:15pm - 4:15pm

Session Highlights

Drifter > Pdx Mirage > Drifter rpt

Spinning Clipper > Vortex bs

Gyro Mirage > Drifter bs

Ducking Butterfly > Ducking Pdx Mirage rpt

Spinning Clipper x 7

-=( Summary of the Day )=-

It was an intense session, with few breaks, a whole lot of non-stop drilling and success. It was a good day. The only thing that could have went better was that my Vortexes weren't as good as I had hoped but I presume it was from being tired. I've been contemplating some Sick 3 combos that I want to try to hit once I'm fully healed so stay tuned folks!

Friday, July 2

It twas a decent day. I hit a few good things, but for some reason I got tired rather quickly during my afternoon session. My shins feel fine now, I was doing a bit of atomic and stepping work for a few minutes and didn't feel too much. However, just to be safe, I'm still going to be taking it easy.

*** Session 1 ***

Went over the foundation tricks again, focusing a bit more on runs then drilling. Worked on Drifters again for a little bit then proceeded to work on some Barrages and double downs.

Session Time

1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Session Highlights

Drifter > Ripwalk > Drifter bs

Vortex > Spinning Osis (off my foot) bs

12 - 15 guiltless run

Scorpion's Tail > Scorpion's Tail > Scorpion's Tail (missed the catch)

*** Session 2 ***

I wanted to have a bit of a late nite session, so I did. Went over pixie sets... I'm so rusty on them it's hideous. Much much work to be done. I also fulfilled a request made by Kevin (qphox). Afterwards I did a few more double downs but on a weakside Paradon attempt I seemed to have hurt my knee. Nothing serious, thank God. It should be good tomorrow.

Session Time

12:00 am - 12:45 am

Session Highlights

Ducking Scorpion's Tail

-=( Summary of the Day )=-

Not too bad. I know what I need to work on, which is better then nothing. Hitting the 6 add was definitely the best part, but too bad I'm tired right now because I'm not very giddy about it. In the morning I will be

Monday, July 5

Now that I'm working, I won't be able to shred as much as before. Nonetheless, I'll be shredding twice as hard to make up for it. Tonite's session, for some reason, was really good and really bad. It was really good in the sense that I was drilling Drifters like a mad man and hit a new record for consecutives. The bad part was when I tried a stepping set on both sides, only to have shearing pains in my shins again. Fuck sakes. Blah, more time will be needed for the healing process to occur.

Anyways, I'll sum up nicely some of the highlights from my previous sessions that I had but did not post.

Drifter > Ripwalk > Drifter bs
5 consec Drifters
Vortex hit on first attempt on both sides

That's pretty much all I can remember right now. I'm not going to be going for string length until: A) my shins are fully healed B) I have more tricks under my belt that I can use, because quite frankly I'm getting a bit tired of always relying on the same tricks in every string. So for now, it's made drilling!!

Anywho, I'm pretty tired and I have sunburns on the tops of my hands / forearms and on my knees from worky. I drive a tractor lawnmower around town and cut grass all day long. It pays 10 dollars an hour, which is pretty damn decent seeings how this isn't very hard labour. I sit, push pedals and levers while making sure I don't run into anything. Definitely better then bee-keeping

I just wanted to apologize for not keeping everyone updated on my progress. Sadly though, there is no progress to report. I haven't been kicking in the last few days primarily because of laziness and fatique. On work days I get between 6 - 7 hrs of sleep. That really starts to catch up on you as the days go by!

Instead of shredding, I have been only thinking about getting a better computer, digi camcorder and a video editing software to make movies of shred. However, that won't work if I don't shred so I really want to get back to where I was before my shins started acting up. It's hard, I've lost so much and my game is hindered incredibly. Last nite I had a 45 min session and I had troubles doing Butterfly Pdx Mirage rpt. It pissed me off. Not only that, but my endurance when down the to the shits. In 10 minutes I was sweating and tired beyond belief. Blah.

Well, where to start...

I've been trying to get some time in for shred during the evenings. So far so good. I've been hitting some 5 and 6 adds, so that's been keeping my motivation up. I'm starting to get back to where I was before, there are just a few more things that I should start to go over first (primarily sets) then it's back to drilling and, once I feel I have a solid grip on a handful of tricks, I want to go for string length and variety.

My double downs are getting much better, especially on my weaker side. I'm still able to step out of them, though it could use a bit of work (again, especially on my weaker side). For some reason I've been drilling symp double downs. I'm finding them fun to perform. The movement still feels a bit akward with my left leg but since my double downs are coming along I presume the motions will start to feel more comfortable with time.

Byrin - over and out for the nite :)

Well, I had two sessions today, both showing some positive feedback.

My first session was pretty much a 'go over everything' session. I hit a 16 contact guiltless run within a few attempts, which I really didn't expect at all. I basically took 2 shuffling drills and put them together to make one long drill, and within a few attempts I hit it and then some.

My second session started out with the intentions of dialing my absolutely positively horrid pixie sets. I did that for about 10 - 20 minutes before I somehow got sidetracked and started hitting some new Drifter tricks. I'm glad I did the transition, because by the end of the nite I was able to do stepping sets chest/head height a hell of a lot more consistantly then before. I tried ducking a few, but they ended up just hitting my neck. No worries, I would like to learn how to do truely consistant stepping sets at that height before progressing to stepping ducking tricks.

All in all, it was a good day. I just hope I'm not too sore tomorrow ;)

Heh heh heh... So you are correct on that one Chris. BUT!!! In my defence I will claim that I only hit it once and I was primarily going for Blurry Torque beforehand (not that it matters anyways).

So tonite... tonite... I caught on to Spinning Pdx Blenders finally. It's only been what? Half a year maybe?!?! Bleh, ah well I'm just happy that I know what I was doing wrong. My first attempt on my weakside I hit it unsealed. That was the closest I got on that side. Tomorrow is another day.

In regards to Surging Blender, I wish that the set was legit. I haven't gone over surging sets in about 3 months and decided to give it a whirl (no pun intended :P). It needs work... a lot of work. However, I have other things that are higher on my priority list at the moment so they will just have to wait.

I'm starting to work in my next 4 tricks that I want dialed into my warm ups. Hopefully I will get the hang of them soon and can start making some progress on string length. Currently my contact record is 19 guiltless. I hope by the end of the summer I can go 30. It's a pretty big step, but I believe that I will be able to reach it.

Anyways, it's late and I have a fun day of work ahead of me. Take care everyone!

PS - I keep forgeting to mention this, but please feel free to comment as much as you wish :)

Another day, another session.

My basic tricks are pretty much dialed, I'd say. I can hit them with very high consistancy and with little effort which, to me, is a sign that I should begin working on my next batch of tricks. They include Drifters, DLOs, Symp Mirages and Smears. All of them are rusty and need working but I'm hoping that by the end of the month I'll have a good grasp on each and can begin incorporating them into strings more.

With that said, moving on to how my session went. The highlight included hitting Montage again and doing 10 contacts of Butterfly > Torque. I lost my touch on Torques so much it's scary so I thought it would be a good idea if I atleast took 20 - 30 min and went over them. For the most part I got back into my groove, but the one thing that I want to work on is my technique / form. I'm striving to do Torques and Torque affiliates like Vasek does - with the leg bent at the knee at a 90 degree angle followed by a short quick spin to help perform the dexterity. My strongside isn't too bad, but the other isn't as fortunate. Instead, my leg is fairly straight which forces my spin to be slower and, in turn, throws me a bit off balance for the catch and set afterwards.

Another thing I realized is that my one side (right foot clipper side) is horrible for doing Whirlwinds, despite it being the side that I first hit it and Montage on. I can't incorporate the hop needed to perform the PS Whirl after the spin, which throws me for a loop. Not only that, but the spinning ducking part needs a bit of work. Bleh, so much to work on and so little time to do it all.

As my session drew to a close, I tried a combo inspired by Mark Leeman from Winnipeg (Hackrifice). In one of their Videos - sinister Strings by Andrew Grant - he hits Ripwalk > Pdx Torque. I managed to hit that on both sides, and wanted to make a short shuffling run that went Butterfly > Ripwalk > Pdx Torque rpt. I hit it on both sides, but being as tired as I was, just couldn't pull it off to the full 6 contacts. Another day.

On another note, on Monday while I was mowing the grass in our local cemetary I got a brilliant idea for next summer. You see, by that time I hope to have enough money to get myself a vehicle - a vehicle to drive myself down to Edmontown and meet up with the footbag crew there. Shred it up baby! But it doesn't stop there, oh no. I hope to make a trip across Canada and head towards Winnipeg and meet up with the Hackrifice crew. Sure they'll make me look totally newb, but I don't care. I'm in it for a total learning experience and to make new friends. And if that's not enough, I was also thinking of going a bit further to shred with the Brantford Footbag Club, because they are just as badass. If it were to all happen, I'd day a happy guy :D

Anyways, that's about it for the nite. Take it easy folks :)

5 hours of time dedicated to footbag today. It felt nice, very nice.

My game is progressing, but not in a crazy way. I find stepping sets to be hard to do again, and I don't know why. It frustrates me because I can't put my finger on why that is. Perhaps my shorts? They are a bit long - well, could be shorter imo. I hope that's all that it is. My other tricks are coming along, which is nice, and I'm also getting into that dirty habit of hitting tricks and not focusing on strings. Arg!! If someone were here to shred with then I know I would focus on strings a hell of a lot more.

I think, in the hopes to dial more tricks more quickly, I'm going to school 5 at a time and not 4. I'm also thinking of changing the way I start my sessions. Here is how I usually do it:

Kick for a few minutes.
Legover > ATW as many times as possible (just because I find this so fun)
Consec Clippers

Osis - (Osis > Far Osis rpt)
Whirls - (working on making them downtime)
Consec Butterflies
Butterfly > Pdx Mirage rpt as many times as possible

Butterfly > Pdx Mirage > Butterfly > Whirl > Osis > Pdx Mirage > rpt for as long as possible

Smears - hit two consec Smears on both sides then move on
Drifters - move on after hitting 4 consec
DLO - move on after hitting 2 consec on each side
Symp Mirage - finish after hitting 3 consec on both sides

I usually spend around 5 - 10 min on the above 4 tricks before going for the consecutives, hitting them from toe and / or clip. Once I become better at them, I will increase the consec limit higher until I feel comfortable enough with the trick to move on. After I'm done, I usually move on to whatever it is I feel like. I don't know how I'm going to change it - Maybe making my foundation tricks my warm up and then just move on to the next batch of tricks, then on to the ones I want dialed. Who knows? It's still up in the air :P

Some highlights of today's session - I found that I have enough time to add onto a Pdx Mirage (ie - making it a set, but it's still not uptime). I hit Voodoo on both sides, and I'm quite confident I can do an all downtime Pdx Miraging Symp Illusion. That should be interesting. I also hit my second legit 7 adder - Pdx Mofly. I really didn't expect to hit this today, so it was a very pleasant surprise.

I also have plans on hitting a new trick which I hope no one has hit before, and I've got a nifty name picked out for it as well. I just really really hope that no one hits it before I do because it's such a neat name and it fits in to it's sister move (another trick that has a nifty name). We'll see!

Yesterday must have been a real good session, because I'm feeling it today. Not only were my legs stiff and sore, but also my lower/mid back. I think it was mostly from attempting Symp DLO so many times - but in the end I hit it on both sides so it's all good 8) .

Anyways, today I didn't have much of a session. I was too tired and sore to do much so I basically went over all my basic tricks and also on the other tricks I'm working on dialing. I guess the highlight of this session was that I did 22 contacts of Butterfly > Pdx Mirage, only to drop it due to lack of space. Yar matey!! My porch needs to be larger! Bleh, either that or I need to control myself a bit more by not moving around so much... hmm... nah, the porch needs to be larger  .

Another highlight of the nite was hitting two consec Ducking Mirages and Ducking Mirage > Symp Mirage bs. If I can throw them in mid string by the end of the month then I'll be happy, but I guess that really depends on how my legs (and back) feel for the rest of the week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

In any event, take care people and I hope all of you that are attending World's have a great time and bring me back some videos :D

Well, good news bad news time.

The good news is that I get payed at the end of the week. I estimate a cheque for anywhere around 1500 - 1700 dollars. That will be nice.

The bad news, I have pains in my fucken shins again. Motherfucker. This is just fucken peachy. I know all the tricks that eventually led to this - all the Symp Miraging shit I've been doing along with the Smears (pixie sets in general). Anything involving a stepping set hurts, along with almost anything Whirl related, atomic related, Symple Legovers and 'over downs'. Even consecutive Butterflies and Pdx Mirages bring pain. WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!   What's the use if I can't do shit now?

The pain isn't excrutiating... yet, but it did force me to stop for fear that I may be doing more harm then good. I'm going to take a break for the rest of the week... maybe see how I feel on Friday or Saturday. This is fucking bullshit, and it pisses me off. On top if it, I hear everyone busting huge at Worlds. Well fuck me up the ass and call my Charlie. Good for you "normies" who can shred the week away who only have to worry about which circle to join. Meanwhile, I'm here (alone... like I have been for close to 15 months) with pains in my fucking shins for the second fucking time. I hope you guys have a wonderful time. I really do. I also hope that you never EVER fucking take a shredding partner for granted.

Footbag is becoming boring and meaningless. It brings me shin pains and all I do is dial tricks and watch while my 'once dialed tricks' slip away. Fuck it. Fuck it to hell.

So long.

Hey man, i feel really sorry for your shin pains.

I remember a while ago when i always used to say "damn, he twisted his ankle and he's still going". That was only because i was jealous of your skills and it seemed like i had an opportunity to catch up. (honestly, i never wanted you hurt, but it was fun to joke about it).

Now that i realize that wishing people bad just for my own benefit is way wrong, even if its a joke. I realize now that i should not have acted this way before when you said you were half injured. I'm just sorry about it. But i have refrained from any such statements as of a long time ago. So i hope you forgive me for any of that crap i may have been saying.

You are very naturally talented and i hope and wish you well. Do not give up footbag unless you entirely think you have to. I have no say over it of course, but really, this is something you are really really good at. I suggest perhaps having someone look at your pains? That may help you figure out what is going on. I really hope this pain goes away. I know how bad shin splints are, they hurt like a *******.

If i'm not supposed to be posting in the blog, i'm sorry, but i had to put my opinion in. Footbag, yes, gets boring to me as well, and it must really really suck when you hit tricks that you can't even continue doing. But i really suggest just finding some help about the shin splints and keep up the hard shredding.

You have inspired me to become a better player. Trust me, everytime i see you or conrads or anyone elses videos, it inspires me to do better. I can only hope you continue and you get better soon.

I'll ttyl, see why i didn't want to say all that in the messenger? It would have been a million tons of blue!

Take it easy

seriously Byrin it does get better! i felt as u do now so many times when i had bad shin splints.. i had em for like a year in varying levels of pain... but i got through it.. i know how hard it is watching other ppl shred it up and get better.. and when u try to play it hurts so much and ur legs seem like they weigh 10 times as much... but with stretching and shredding on carpet and just working through the pain, it gets better. ur legs just need to adjust to the pressure u put them under, they need to develop greater strength esp in the front of the shin

please dont give up Byrin! u r a huge rising talent with alot of natural skill, dont let this little bump get in the way of ur promising footbag career :D

I haven't played footbag for, like, 4 months due to a terrible groin injury. I won't be playing anytime soon. You're lucky it's just shins. I had REALLY bad shins splints before. Get yourself some top of the line insoles -- I got the spneco ones, but there are insoles you can get for like a hundred dollars or something that are custom made for your feet!! Also do some exercises!! Never take for granted that you're ABLE to do stretches and stuff. I'm so injured that it hurts to stretch. Look after yourself and take it easy on the symposium moves!!

Chris - Thanks for the kind words. It was real touching, and I mean that. I consider you and Conrad to be one of my best friends, and to hear things like that really helps. Thank you :)

Ian - What can I say? You were one of the first people to give me props and I've looked up to you ever since. I'll take your word on this. With stretching, exercises and easy - going shred sessions I'll get through this.

Erik - The insoles I have right now are 30 dollar athletic gel - like insoles. So far they've done real good (up until Conrad ame over at the end of May, that's when I first got shin pains). I gave them 3 weeks, and they went away but then came back two days ago. Yesterday they just got to the point where I couldn't do much. If I may ask, how did you injure your groin?

Jeremy - Thank you for the site, and the kind words. You are definitely one of my inspirations. I shred hard in the hopes that one day I can bust huge alongside you at a comp. One day... :)

Now that I'm not angry, I'll post more of my thoughts on what's happenin with me.

My previous post was in anger, and I apologize if I offended someone or tuaght them a few nasty words. It does frustrate me though. If I take time off for these pains to go away, then I have to almost relearn the tricks I've been going over for a month now, then go over everything else just so I can get back into my groove. I'm already losing my touch on things as it is, it just seems to be too much for me at one time. It's a bit stressful.

Jeremy Mirken is right, however. I need to start playing smart. I have no discipline. I easily get carried away with my sessions, and end up trying to hit big tricks rather than stringing/dialing my smaller ones. I have to start taking this more seriously. This is where a shred partner would be very usefull. But still... no excuses. I need to smarten up (literally  ) and get my act together. Take baby steps at a time, and gradually work my way up.

But like I mentioned above - smarten up and I'm going to start by doing calf massages, exercises and stretches. This is the first step. The next is to take it nice and easy during my sessions, as not to make them worse. I'm going to do this by workong on my spinning (perhaps start to by getting double spinning more consistant), along with some small ducking/diving tricks. Still a lot of things I can do I reckon.

Anyways, thank you for those who shared their concern. I really very much appreciate it. Please, feel free to post in here if you feel the need, I really don't mind (atleast I know someone is reading this :P).

Anyways, I'm off to the bath tub to go give my calves a rubbin. Good nite everyone.
