When I first started... like I really didn't see why self-serving was a bad thing... but yeah, it's true and I see it now. It's kind of like hogging the bag. If you're playing between like 2 or 3 people, it's not that bad... but in a circle or more people, it tends to look quite selfish.

I don't self serve ever in a circle. I figure if you drop the bag, why on earth should you throw it back to yourself. Anywany, when you're playing with a group of people you're used too they'll pass back if necessary. I just think self serving is selfish and it pisses me off.

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the euros. One of the reasons was that there were hardly any self serving going in the circles I was in. It was just so enjoyable to shred in a circles like that. Now that I've played in a circle that self serves again I miss the euros even more!
Oh, and the worst is when everyone else is self serving and you try not to, but the one after you just figures that you will self serve as long as you want to play and since you passed it to him already, he will keep it!

I'm against self serving as well.
If someone hits a cool move but it was their 2nd or 3rd time in a row trying it, I'm thinking "Props, but it would have been a lot cooler if you did it first try". I'd much rather even see them take more turns to hit it, but have them be one at a time, as it goes around the circle, and then finally pull it off.
Everything just seems a lot less sick and genuine when it's done after a self serve. Everyone should strive to bust out large on their first attempt with the bag.

there is a time and a place for everything.
if you are in a circle that isn't a "training circle" or ANYONE is watching you don't self serve.
in other words the only time to self serve is in training circles where no one is watching. IE me and my buddy on the raquetball courts. or in you're basement with someone you've kicked with a million times b4.

well i have something to contribute to this that no one has brought up.....
i often play with people who are much much better then me, since there are very little newbie players in montreal.... i am one of the least experience of the group of people i play with... for example... i sometimes find myself in a circle with people like yacine... now, yacine "the fiend" merzouk has very, very long strings..the majority of the time he passes the bag not because he droped it, just because he's had it for quite a long time... and once he passes it to me (the least experienced one in the circle) i drop after a fiew contacts.... now, its not really that fair to have the bag for like 5 seconds in comparison to the minute long dropless runs some of the people make in the circle.... i often self-serve in this situation just so that i'll get SOME playing time! if i don't then i'll end up playing for around 5-10 seconds and watching other people playing for a good 5-10 minutes before it gets back around to me. no one else in the circle minds....
if someone hogs the bag for too long, longer then a respectable reasonable time... then thats just hogging.... in conclusion, i think that the majority of the people here agree that self-serving is okay in moderation and depending on the situation. so i think instead of saying "self-serving shouldn't be done" i think it should be changed to "hogging the bag shouldn't be done".

thats true. In situations like that, the experienced players are the ones getting all the experience and playing time, while the newbies are the ones who need to have the bag more.
I think many times if you have not so long strings and you drop it quickly, you will get the bag passed back to you once or twice.

I don't know if I've posted on this thread before, but if I did I probably said no. Now that I've played a bit more and gone to a few events I think it's fine if you're with people that you know decently and you're trying to hit something new. If I'm with people I've never kicked with before, I generally just pass if I drop early (which is pretty much always). You can always get a rebate.
