Ya I am going to have to go ahead and agree with chris and say that was the best i could come up with. I thought about it for about 5-10 mins and looked over all the answers and that would have to make the most sense

Yeah I'm glad people did do that speculating actually becuase it goes to show that Mike was right and I was wrong I think.

Basically sic means that a quoted word has been spelt in the way it was originally said - so the word is spelt in a weird or incorrect way and then has been quoted and the person doing the quote has quoted it correctly.

So it does mean that "awesom (sic)" was spelt incorrectly - but also that I knew it was but was quoting somebody else who spelt it like that.

I thought most people would know what it meant and Mike thought they wouldn't.

It's possible that 58% of people got it right (those that said it meant that "awesom (sic)" was spelt incorrectly and those that said it meant something else. However it seems clear that many people had a vague idea of what it meant or just guessed - despite what I said at the start of the topic. That's cool - it's always fun to see how people respond and to try to come up with wording for polls that will give you accurate answers - much harder than it looks.

you use "sic" to indicate that the spelling of a quoted passage is exactly like it was in the original text. you usually use it when there are errors in that passage. My French/English teachers drilled that one into my head throughout years of essays at school

but maybe in Jeremy's example there were two errors: it could have been:

that was awesome (sick)

or maybe not.
