using cell phones in public

Post by carl winslow »

what do you think of people using cell phones in public?
i noticed that in museums, librarys, in some stores and on trains you are not allowed to use a cell phone. i dont really ever use my cell phone that much but i dont see why people are not allowed to use there phone in a museum a library a train or a store. when you are talking to someone on a phone you are just as loud as you would be if you were talking to someone right next to you. why does it matter?

the cellphones have different frequencies when used indoors, and those are the dangerous, cancer causing, waves that end up giving us tumors.

edit: none or all of what i said may in fact be true.

If there not loud speakers then i really don't care. But when my dad gets a call and he gets excited he talks so loud I hate it.

I don't mind where you use them for the most part. If you are going to use them in a public place, talk somewhat quietly, please.

DON'T USE THEM IN CARS unless it's an emergency.

In movies, resturants, etc. turn the ringer way down. We don't care that you got a call, and we don't want to hear you gloat about anything you've done. Take it outside, fucker...

in a museum
A museum is a public display of works. It should be given the same courtesy as a feature presentation at a theatre. From the time you enter till the time you leave, you are taking part in a public display of pieces. As a courtesy to other patrons of the museum, don't ruin their experience by having a private conversation in a public showcase.
a library

Take a wild guess. Oh, on second thought, take three. First two don't' count.
a train

Trains have rooms where people can get up and go chat on the phone. I didn't pay airfare rates to be seated next to some loudass dumbfuck having a conversation about green beans vs yellow peas for 3 hours. It's really in the best interest of the business operating the train to make it a pleasure for as many people as possible.
a store.

Not sure about this one, but you are still bringing a private conversation into a private space, and being annoyed with such crap is bad for the business. People tend to spend less money if they spend less time in a store. People spend less time in a store if people with cell phones are annoying as hell.
when you are talking to someone on a phone you are just as loud as you would be if you were talking to someone right next to you. why does it matter?
Because when two people are there, both of them are aware of others being around and show respect to those around them or deal with the consequences. A phone call is a private conversation, just take it out of the public places.

In Finland, everyone has cell phone or two. You get your cellphone when you're about seven years old and start going to school. People talk to cellphones in all places. Many people just has a cellphone. It's okay and we always laugh to countries who don't use cellphones so much.

Yes I read that in Finland the percentage of 18/25 yr. old owenrs of cellphones is about 99% (or very close to that). They are the leaders in cellphone usagefor Europe and the rest of Europe is quickly catching up. Most people in France own a cellphone too. For over a year now I have absolutly no use for my landline (excpet the occasionnal long distance call that has better fares than on my cell).

Concerning usage in public places: personnaly I never have my ringer on, and I do find it disturbing hearing a very very loud ring in a public place. Here's a little anecdote: I was in a café the other day enjoying a coffe and reading the paper, and a couple of guys were at a table next to us, on of their cellphones ring REALLY loud (whole café + street shared his pleasant ringtone). It was one of those absolutly awefull polyphonic renditions of some lame top100 song, anyway it must have been an intrusive gf or something calling as the guy didn't want to pick up, yet didn't to screen the call and hang up on the person either... So we all had to wait silently and uncomfortably for 30 seconds as the ringing stopped... Just put your ringer OFF people :) makes it easier for everyone else!!
