I saw a quite disturbing documentary a few months ago about the sub culture of "feeding" - where guys with obesity fetishes would feed women to see how big they could get. Often the women ended up trapped in the houses completely reliant on the husbands and unable to lose the weight (since the only foot the males would give them were high fattening (sp) foods).

Anyway I found it to be a pretty shocking form of domestic abuse and I think it's most likely that that's pretty much what was happening here.
