Calf pains

Post by ebo »

For a while now I've been experiencing pains in both my calfs.
The pain used to appear only when I did stepping or pixie sets,
but now it appears when I'm just shredding tiltless for a while,
which never seemed to be a problem. I have seen a doctor for
this, but he couldn't help me.

Since my calf muscles have developed greatly since playing
footbag (obviously), it can't be that the muscles are too weak.
The pain already comes when I do a couple of infinities.

I never figured out what it might be - now I have a feeling it could
be a deficiency symptom - maybe I'm lacking something like
magnesium or calcium. So I started taking magnesium and calcium
fizzy tablets. No results yet tho.

Has anyone here experienced similar problems with their calfs,
and does anyone know what might be causing it?

How many days a week do you kick? You may find that if you take 4 days off or more then your legs will have a chance to fully repair themselves.

I can't really describe the pain, but it hurts while walking. It feels very
sore.

I've already had this problem in one calf about a year ago,
and after shredding with pain for 6 weeks, I decided to check the
doctor. I took an 8 week break, with no effect. I had full lower leg
bandage for a week, and after that it was ok. Until I started drilling
stepping sets. It came back. So I stopped with Stepping, and the pain
was gone.

Now, over the past 4 weeks it has reappeared almost everytime I
kick. I usually kick 3-5 times a week, mostly 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
I stretch out after every session.

The pain already arises when I jump on one foot for a couple of times.
About 2-3 weeks ago I took a week off, with no effect.

It's better to stretch out afterwards. I do warm up for 15 minutes,
which is better than to stretch too much before a session.

Well, I've had my share of leg problems, but I found that not only stretching, but also icing, helps a lot. Maybe you should try icing every once and a while. I'm not sure if it will help your case at all, but it may be worth a try. Maybe 15 minutes per side of your leg(s) twice a day would help.

Are you landing on your heals? Maybe you are not bending your knees enough. Richie

I'm not landing on my heels, no. What exactly do you mean by
bending the knee - like in cushioning the landing with the knee?

the problem is that the pain comes even after the slightest stress -
i only have to hop on one foot with my heel in the air, and the
pain is there.

I think you might have pull the muscle away from the bone. There also might be a tear in the tissue that has not healed yet. The only way to fix this problem that I mentioned is time off. I hope I am wrong. Richie

i used to have the same problem you described. i would always stretch before and after sessions, hoping the pain would go away, but it never did. simple infinities always brought the pain back..... then i stopped playing for a month and when i started up again it was gone. and still to this day i haven't gotten the pain back. i guess whatever was wrong needed time to heal. maybe u should just take it easy for a while and see what happens

Yes, I recently read on a body building site that even after muscle soreness goes away, for up to a week the muscles are still injured. If you do have some sort of tear, it would take probably longer than a week to heal.

I probably have a similar deal with my hip joints, they hurt whenever I play for more than a half hour, and especially after trying a dex of any kind. I think I need to just skool my clippers for a month. :(

feel sorry for u ebo, looks like ur gonna have to rest for awhile.
I have had pains in my leg and calf muscles vefore but thats probably im not stretching enough, but the worst soreness is the muscle around your shin bone (dunno what its called), everytime you walk it gets flexed and it hurts like crap. But muscle injuries always require rest and care. So rest and take care mate.

Cheers

Thanks everybody for the input.

I had a great 4 1/2 hour session today, probably my longest ever
with Jendrik from Kiel who is in town for a couple of days.
Slight pain in my calf, but I did a lot of Pixie and stepping, and
normally this would've caused instant pain. The magnesium really
did the job - it was just a malnutrition. Woo!

How did you know magnesium was the right nutrient you needed ? Is magnesium associated with bones or muscles ?
