Has anybody modified Nastases?

Hey all.

A local shoe store is selling Nastases at a nice price. Now, the outside of a Nastase looks slippery, and it has those stripes which get in the way. What I was wondering, is has anybody modified Nastases in the same way people mod leather lavers? Like, try and cut out the outer layer of a Nastase and just leave the innermost thin layer? How did that go?

Any input at all would be appreciated, especially before the weekend. I think the sale ends soon.

I modified a pair of nastases couple years ago. I don't remember what I did, but I removed ALOT from those shoes and still they didn't reach the level of Rod Lavers. There was some problems with them that I can't remember. I wouldn't recommend those shoes :\

But didn't you have leather Nastase millenniums Jere? Or are those what you're asking about C?

Many european players, or at least some french, use modified classic Ilie Nastase shoes, as they used to be somewhat easy to find in Europe. I guess the only difference to Rod Lavers would be the material; instead of nylon mesh Nastases came with slightly different material. And there are the stripes, of course.

BTW, do they still sell those shoes somewhere in Europe? Paris? I might want to purchase a pair.

Yeah Ilkka is right, I got the leather millenium Nastases and they weren't any good :)

OK, to clarify.

1. Im talking about regular nastases, not milleniums.

2. I am not asking about the standard laver modification, but rather if anybody has done the leather laver mod to regular Nastases. You see, the outside layer of a nastase seems slippery than the mesh of a regular laver. But I noticed that on the inside of the nastases, there`s a SUPER thin layer of material. So if one were to cut out the OUTSIDE of the shoe, you could have a nice stalling surface on the inside. But I`m afraid it`d be too hard to cut it properly, or the shoe would become too structurally weak, so I wanted advice from anybody who had tried doing the leather laver mod to classic nastases.

There're some kinds of Nastases as Laver, Laver LE, Laver Millenium.

Hey Jen, I still play with my 4yr old nastases, although their life is close to an end
I have not taken off the outer layer of the shoe, yet I did make these mode (in this order) :

- took off the stripes (because I didn't like the look)
- took off 4 eyelets on each shoe
- broka mod.

As I said, I've had mine for 4 yrs of extensive freestyle, so they are pretty durable, I don't know how they would fare without that outer layer, which, btw is not at all slippery, much less than the laver's outer layer. With time the materialgets very soft making it a real pleasure to kick with.
If the price is low, I'd def. encourage you to give them a try.
