Mt First Bag!

Well, my first bag is almost done, only two seams left, took me about 5 hours total. I have no filler as of yet so I can't quite finish it yet, but here are some pics of how it is now.....

Inside out pic #1, looks pretty gross

Rightside out pic, this is my fav! It looks pretty good in this shot, nice and round, moderately even panels.....

I am now one step closer to my dream of having a million bags of all differnet colors....

thats so butiful i wish so bad i could do something like that, i think im gonna addtempt to make a bag some time soon i dont know how you start tho. Do you just cut out the patterns then sew it together, then flip it inside out, then how do you get it sew together?

dude...for your first bag,maybe its the colors, i dunno,but that looks REALLY good for a first bag...seems like it could possibly break in nicely and be playable..we might have a new pro stitcher on the market

looks pretty good, but the panels look a bit uneven in a couple of the pictures.... and it looks like some of the sides would pop out... like the little triangles sides that aren't sewn and just folded over..... unless you sewd (sp?) them shut.... but yeah from these pics it looks like after a bit of time they might fold out wards.... that's what happend with my first bag, but it could just be that under the weight of the pellets i used, the little flaps couldn't hold out. another thing, i don't know how much you pulled on your thread after sewing a side... but it helps to pull a bit and make the material a bit bunched up so the bag turns out less floppy later on (but that could also be personal preference..). i was just wondering... how often did you knot your thread? like after every couple sides... or after you ran out of thread on your needle?

looks very good for your first bag... much better then my first attempt at a bag... I really need to buy some ultrasued light so I can try a 32 panneler... it's so epensive for fabric...

Yeah, the seams between the hex's are too loose, it won't hold filler very well unless I stitch them up. I need to stitch tighter and possibly use a pattern allowing for longer flanges between the hex's. I also need to get my hands on some ultrasuede light. I couldn't find any around here, so I just got some regular ultrasuede to start with. I can really tell the difference now that the bag is together, it's WAY stiff. I'm going to finish this one, and fill it with some large caliber filler so it won't leak, then I can keep it for inspiration. My second bag WILL be kickable.

Oh, and to Claudia, I was just knotting the thread at every pentagon, so each peice of thread did 5 seams. This was one of the things I was unsure of and just tried what seemed logical to me. Is this the way other people do it? Oh yeah, and as of yet I haven't found any ultrasuede light retailers in Atlantic Canada, one in Ontario, I guess I'll have to mail order it.

However, it seems to me that you could have been a little bit more encouraging or at least less negative in your post. Would you walk up to someone at a jam who was just starting stitching and yell "GATHER more!" and walk away?
Fortunately I won't be, but someone else might have even been discouraged by your post, knowing your reputation as a stitcher.

Yeah, I know he didn't mean to sound negative, but thats the problem with text, someone might interperate it that way. I apologize for that comment, but,
If that had been the first reply to this thread, I definately would have felt discouraged, especially since he's the biggest stitching name to have replied.

that sounds good that you made knots after every 5 sides or so.... i make them after every side (which is a huge hassle and takes so much time) but if they ever break i wont have to take apart 5 sides to repair one stitch, but yeah that takes a lot of time and i'm pretty crazy.

Oh, heh, never considered that. It would make repairs alot easier. Here I was going in the opposite direction, thinking of how I could do multiple pents with one peice.
And If you wouldn't mind one more question cclaudia, how exactly do you close your ending knots? I've been experimenting with putting the needle through both layers, then puting the needle through the loop before tightening that stitch. This however leaves a knot that crushes the flaps on the inside at the point of the knot. The other way I've tried is to just make a knot in the thread, and try to push it down to the edge of the fabric so its exactly like the starting knot. I haven't been able to get this tight enough yet, so I must over-tighten the thread so the slack will let it out to where it should be, but I haven't been very accurate yet.

My explanations probably made no sense, but I'll keep working on it. Theres probably some wicked easy way to do it I'm overlooking, at least I hope.

what i do,.... is i make sure when my second-to-last stitch of that panel has to be sewn next... then i put the needle in the material then out again like a normal stitch... but instead off pulling the needle completely out and pulling the thread... i put the needle back in again and make the last stitch... like i'm making two stitches at one time..... then i pull out a bit (not all the way)... and you should notice there will be a little loop from the first stitch and i just put the needle back through the loop and make a knot like that.
it makes a little knot along the inside.... but it doen'st really pull much, like i don't really get what you were saying about the knot pulling on the flaps.... i just press on the knot after its' done and cut the thread... just to smooth all the material out a bit, that usually works fine.
this is pretty damn hard to explain over the a post so i hope you understand.

I think I know what you mean. I was donig the same thing your describing, except I was going over the top edges of the two peices of material, so it would squish them. Your method should work alot better, I'll try it tonight!

Quality footbag you have there Rob...... great job indise stitching you did..... kick ass footbag you made..... how the crap did you flip it right-side out so that you can get the bag to be like that?

Gr8 job on bag..... are those performance colors on your lonns and stuff?
