Escanaba in Da Moonlight is definitely my favorite, anyone else seen it?

The Terminal is also a Spielberg movie! You probably just forgot though.

If ever there was a movie for its time, `The Terminal` must be it. The whole idea of not having a country was never more relevant than it is now. Tom Hanks character isn`t just a physical refugee, a man without a country, he is a man without a spiritual country either. Seeing him, living in the microcosm of an airport.... really, don`t we just see our own isolation reflected back? Isn`t the world, with all its bewildering announcements, myriad cultures, and bad food, just like an airport?

The whole movie really provides a dialectic of what life is. Tons of people pass by us every day, each with different `destinations,` but they are just background. Truly, a hero is he who can find love in such a world.

Has there ever been such a work of art which reflects the alienation of the modern world, the paradoxes of patriotism and nationalism, and the emptiness of modern life, as Spielberg`s masterpiece?

I think it is safe to assume: no.

I think I can see a few more golden statuettes in Hanks and Spielbergs trophy cases next March. Bravo, gentlemen, bravo.

PS- Tom Hanks speaks with a really funny foreign accent. It`s hilarious!

PPS- If you see this movie, I will accept BAP next year, and vote YOU into BAP the year after that. This movie is THAT good.

Yeah... The Terminal was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I usually don't go to many movies at the theater, but after a friend's recommendation, I broke down and saw it. I'm glad I did so.

Ok this has been really bugging me for a long time now theres thiw movie that's comming out pretty soon I think or maybe already out in asai but anyways I thought I should ask... It's this futuristic movie... It's called something like kersing or karshing or something... I can't remember... please help me... It looks kind of like a samuria movie but set in the future, where a disease has wiped out most of mankind... hope someone can help me...

Yeah The Terminal rocks!!!

OMG everybody has to go see this right now. Turn off your computer and go see it. It's not just the best movie I've seen this year, it's probably the best movie I've seen. It's so moving and captivating. Tom Hanks gives the best perfomance in acting history!!!!

Seriously I went and saw this yesterday on Ken's recommendation and it's amazing. I have to say I was a tad sceptical - mainly because I'm not a fan of Spielberg's other movies - but wow.

Thanks Ken for letting us know about this amazing movie!

One more note about `the Terminal.`

When I first went to see the movie, I thought the title referred to an airport terminal. You know, like a building at an airport where you wait for your flight. Only halfway through my second viewing did I start to think that maybe our friend Steven had some other meanings for the title.

`terminal` is sometimes used as a medical term to refer to somebody who is about to die. Somebody with cancer, for example, could be referred to as a `terminal` patient.

Now, while most people would see Tom Hanks situation (forced to live in an airport) as a horrible, dead-end fate, Tom Hanks doesnt give up or give in. No, he manages the incredible, finding love with the most beautiful worker in the airport (catherine zeta jones). Other airport workers can scarecely believe that the beautiful Zeta Jones would choose to date the socially awkward, foreign Hanks, but she can see and appreciate his honest approach towards life. Indeed, by being cut off from `the real world,` Hanks is actually free to start `living.`

When watching the movie, it becomes clear that only Hanks and Zeta-Jones are alive, and have hope for a real life in the future, whereas all the other characters are bound, enslaved really, by the worries of everyday life such as social mores and the opinions of others. Maybe `the terminal` refers not to the building where the movie takes place, but actually refers to all the characters who lead unfulfilling, empty lives (pretty much everybody other than Hanks and Zeta Jones.) In many ways, the movie is about them, `the terminal`, as a contrast to `the living,` who cast off the opinions of others and the worries of modern life, and find refuge in love.

God, this movie works on so many levels.

Oh yeah, and the scene where you can see CZJs nipples is also pretty cool.

Ken, you dork.

I can't believe you just spoiled the movie for all the people who haven't seen it. I got dragged to it on a date, and had no idea what it was about. It is definately about an airport terminal; that and a man who had a life so dull, he didn't really start to live it up until he becomes trapped in an airport terminal. Anyone who has done much traveling knows, airport beer is expensive, and airports suck. Dispite this hugantic technical challenge, Spielberg took on the unbelievably difficult task of casting a crew to make an airport worth watching for two hours. Thats right folks, This man is THAT good. He makes watching a movie about being trapped in an airport sound like a good idea. Obviously casting a movie set in an environment as exciting as a highschool quiz bowl competition is a tough task. Well, lets just say: The women in this movie are hot, and the ones with speaking parts are voluptous, hot, and speak with sexy accents*. Go Steve, it's an obvious thing to do. He does it well. Hanks is a no brainer for this movie. He has a great ability to bring large crowds to movies that are based on bad premises, and being trapped in an airport is a bad premise for a movie for sure. Only in america would investors sink millions of dollars into the production of a film about a lousy topic featuring aging actors being directed by Spielberg. I'm sorta shocked that the movie was good, as I explained in my previous post.

It sounds like you're thinking of the Japanese film CASSHERN based on the 1970s anime of the same name and directed by Kiriya Kazuaki:

The movie was shot entirely using digital backlots (blue screen with digital backgrounds... same technology as the upcoming SKY CAPTAIN) which gives it a very surreal, pseudo-cartoon look.

Yet another great movie -

Solaris (the original one from Tarkovsky from 1972, NOT the Clooney one).

While the original one from '72 was a great adaptation of the book and
very creepy, the remake with George Clooney would better fit in the
worst movies thread.

Definately one of my favourite Sci-Fi movies (and this is not really my genre)
