Media Blackout - R.N.C. and more

Post by Allan »

I've not been surprised over the past few days to look at the major media outlets and not see and damn thing being reported about some of the largest protests in history taking place in New York this week in response to the Republican National Convention being held there.

Though I'm not surprised the media is sleeping on the real news, it, as always, troubles me. It seems that the media is intent on not reporting anything unless it involves violence on behalf of the protesters.

I encourage all of you to visit http://www.democracynow.org and listen to their broadcasts to find out what's really going.

These protests should be the biggest story of the new millenia.

Once again the "free" press has apparently been bought. I bet in a few months when Bush is placed into office while the country is under martial law from coast to coast riots, the press will admit to dropping the ball on this. [/quote]

On the same note, when there is a TWO digit security code that would allow any user to compromise the integrity of our election and the press doesn't cover it . . . it's obvious they are not interested in preserving freedom for people.

I'm referencing this article
http://www.blackboxvoting.org/?q=node/view/78
which contains GEMS [pun intended] such as this one
By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks.
and this one
For four years, anyone who has known how to trigger the double set of books has been able to use, or sell, the information to anyone they want.

This should be all over the front page of every newspaper. The vulnerability has been reported to the manufacturer over a year ago. The tables allow the counting of votes to be compromised with a TWO DIGIT code. Democratic elections are only as accurate as the person (machine) counting the votes. These are intentionally corrupted by a manufacture committed to a Bush victory, and they are intended to manipulate the votes after they have been placed so the numbers make "sense".

What ever happened to the press that kept me updated when OJ took a shit in the morning ?

Fox news . . . consistently forgetting the five W's of journalism.
Who What Where When and Why.

There are lots of articles on the web . . . but more American get their news from ABC news than any other source.
How has their coverage been ?
Oh.
Really.
I kinda thought so.
can't say that I am suprised.

I watch Fox religiously, so I can't say I know jack about ABC news. In fact I don't watch NBC, ABC, CBS, or any other prime time network. So bash away.

I watch Fox for the Simpsons and Seinfeld. That's about it. Most other times my wife has the remote and it's off to TLC to learn how not to make over your room.

I am disturbed by the shots of the people at the convention - mostly old folk with long beards - like an old old photograph from back in the day.

Meanwhile the protesters getting arrested are also older hippies with long hair and beards.

Can't old people and hippies get along? At least they have the same ideal about shaving.

Oh yeah, I found articles that referred to what is going on, but my point was that it's sidebar material. You probably had to go to foxnews.scam and search for those articles... were they linked off the front page?

What lead me to post was more the fact that on *google news* ( http://news.google.com ) I didn't see any reference to what, as has been pointed out, should be one of the largest stories out there.

For those of you unfamiliar with google news and how it displays the stories, the service scours the net looking for the most popular stories. If something gets mentioned repreatedly, then it shows up as it's obviously a high-impact story. In other words, if it's not on google news, it's not really "big news".

No news on these NYC protests, to me, = bad news.

I read those articles you posted Cameron, I especially liked the smoking dragon. What exactly does that refer too, and since it was an anarchists dragon, what purpose does that serve?

The rest didn't seem that over the top, just your normal run of the mill protester snafu.

I also must point out that this is not a one sided protest, there were many many republicans protesting Kerry as well.

double post :)

okay, in foxnews' defence, after actually visiting the front page (ewww, I feel so violated) there was a link to a story about the 900+ protestors arrested yesterday on the front page.

There's still an apalling lack of news about this out there.

Allan,

This is all normal stuff, I am not surprised at all to see record numbers showing up to protests. These explosions are simply a backlash from 9/11 and nothing more. People are pissed that their homeland was violated. Bush can't please everyone, nor can any president. This is the first presidential election since 9/11, and although the numbers are staggering that's about it.

I don't see any reason why this should make headlines. Why? Simply to scare more people. We've had enough terrorism scares, don't you think? Stories about masked men in black and smoking dragons that took place for less than 20 minutes and then ended, doesn't sound that impressive anyway.

Not everyone is political either and are tired of all the coverage. A lot of people just don't care in the US.

The green dragon was a Tavern in Boston. Prior to the Revolutionary War, the Boston Tea Party was planned on the premises of the Green Dragon, and when Paul Revere took his famous midnight ride, he started out at the pub. The pub is frequently called the "Headquarters of the American Revolution," and its name has taken on symbolic significance for modern-day activists who vehemently oppose the actions of the federal government.

Now that is starting to sound juicy, except, would you want anarchy in the US? I sure don't, but I do love the green dragon  , so ---- what you gonna do?

I can't get google to show me the article it was displaying yesterday . . . but it was something like

Don't be so quick to judge violence as RNC protester activities.
Some of the violence was thought to be right wing counter protest groups determined to spark riots and bring in the police to shut down the peaceful demonstrations, smearing the protesters [non republicans] as violent lunatics.

Yes. I like anarchy. I've always thought anarchy was the philosophy that had man painted in the highest ideals. I support anarchy implemented as libertarian socialism.

As usual, I couldn't disagree with you more.

Honestly, I'd consider getting into an argument with you an waste of time (no hard feelings, I'll hack with you any day, but politics, ummm, no), so don't bother with the flame-bait :)

You live in Canada, what would you know about living in the United States other than visiting Northern America?

No flame bait intended. I just don't want to see you make a Canadian case out of a US issue.

Half of America high school graduates can't find the united states on a map. Of the half that can, half of these don't know North America includes Canada, and parts of Mexico

This is a protest over much more than 9-11 . . . . but whatever.

Do you honestly believe that? I was not involved in 9/11 at all and really on global level is was fairly insignificant except for the outcomes it caused. Yet were I anywhere near the US I would be going to the protests. I tend to think that people are mainly protesting about the fact that Bush took your country to two wars against countries that were not any kind of threat to your country - which increased the threat to your country and caused the death of tens of thousands of people - many of which are innocent of any crime and were just colateral damage.

Some people are not happy that people are dieing in their name and the fact that the reason your country went to war the second time was based on misinformation and either lies or ignorance presumably pisses a large number of people off. Lets not forget either that the last three repulican presidents had budget deficiets, Clinton had a surpless and now Bush has the biggest deficiet in US history - so he is incapable of having sensible foreign policy or economic policy. The US has the lowest life expectancy to income ratio in the world and the lowest litracy to income ration in the world - so by comparison to how much money you earn you are the stupidest and most unhealthy country in the world.

There are lots of reasons to protest other than because terrorists got into the country.

As a New Yorker who had his prom in the WTC, I would definitely go to the protests if I were still in America. Bush had my blessing to go to Afghanistan and blow fuck all out of the Taliban. But lying to America and pissing off the world so he could divert and weaken our forces by starting a war with Iraq, thereby forgetting about Afghanistan... and then using NYC as a political backdrop to show his `leadership` in the war on terror... that just enrages me.

Yes I honestly believe that we are seeing a record number of protesters because of 9/11. I have read several articles now where people point blank said, "I was not a political person until 9/11." It has changed the way people view politics. GW just happens to be the current pin cushion for protest at this time.

My point is that no matter who the republicans pick to run, there will always be someone or some group opposed to it. So why make a big deal that it has not made the papers?

And the number of +900 is not that many people. I have seen more people at a high school football game. Hell the million man march brings out more people than the RNC. So does the DMV on a daily basis. I think this whole thread is silly and doesn't deserve front page headline attention.

Stop the bashing and post something positive instead of scratching to find negativity.

OK,

I realize that again I am out numbered by non-republicans on this issue, and that many are not Americans and are entitled to an opinion, so I'll bow out so you guys can discuss the issue without my biased opinion mucking up the works.

Honestly I am so happy to be shredding again, that I don't care who wins the presidency, as long as I can still shred everyday.

Happy politics :D !
