Colouring Lavers

Lol, it does take a bit of "magic" to get it right. I didn't like the whole "dunking" idea because there are some parts of the laver I didn't want dyed (and plus...I dunno what it'd do to the insides.) But yeah staining works like a champ. I think it's because you have so much "concentrated" dye on the cloth and you're actually "pressing" it into the mesh.

IT took me a bit time to figure this out, so don't worry if you don't have the "magic touch"

AH! Crazy raining happenin' here...(PA) got floods EVERYWHERE. Today after school I came home and I had to tred in some puddles. NOT TOO GOOD for my socks. Since water makes ritdye kinda...runny...my socks gotta a nice black pattern on them.

WORD OF ADVICE:
-Don't wear your dyed lavers in the rain
-Put lots of water resistant on them.

Note: the color wasn't affected at all though.

New tip for RitDyed Shoes:

One thing I found out about RitDye, is it's good to keep wiping your shoes off. This'll help get rid of that extra dye that keeps rubbing off. Do it periodically...like once a week. It won't affect the color so no worries, KEEP Wiping them if dye keeps rubbing off. Use like a papertowl, old rag, etc.

I have done some more modding on my Nike Tennis Classics and i'll paint em with acrylic paint as soon as i get some..

I've found the best way to dye Lavers black is to REALLY go at them with a sharpie. This has worked fine for me on the nylon. The more ink you apply, the longer it should last. The Lavers I did this to have gone through the wash and came out looking -better-.

I've never dyed my shoes, but it occured to me today that if you could get the dye in the mesh, there is no reason not to paint the rubber. Probably you wouldn't want to paint your mesh because it would make the mesh stiff and a bit thicker, but that shouldn't be a problem on the rubber. You don't need to feel the bag through the rubber, and a little paint probably isn't going to affect the stiffness of the sole of your shoe. It might look crappy if it peels off, though.
And the coolest Lavers I ever saw where a pair belonging to Alex Zerbe. Jane had patched some holes in them with some recycled 32-panel bags. They looked really cool. Are you still sewing, Jane?

Last weekend I bought a few packages of Tintex and dyed my Lavers green. I applie the dye with a paint brush and it worked *OK*. . . It wasn't quite what I wanted but I'm satisfied with it.

Another thing that seems to help keep the color on, is hair drying your lavers (if you dye or paint 'em). You could also toss them in the dryer too.

For all you kids that want to dye your lavers black, I have again found another solution. I re-did my RitDyed ones today with Pen Ink (Indian ink I think it's called?) anyways, it's the ink that like you would use to ink a drawing or something. This stuff DOES NOT COME OUT, so it ALSO will most likely dye the Rubber part of the shoe also. Again, this is like a test...I'll post later on how the color holds up and so forth

Even with this ink, you will have to spray some sort of sealant like fixitive or water proofing etc. I'd add 2-3 coats. The spray will stiffin' up your shoe, but you can break it in back to normal once you walk around in 'em a couple days.
