What's That Move (C) The Footbag Move Calculator

Post by millenniumtree »

I just whipped up this little tool on me website, and thought you might be interested in it.

What does it do, you say?

You punch in things like:
Toe > Same In > Op Toe
and it spits out: Pixie

Or maybe you want:
Toe > Op Out (plant) > Same In > Op Toe
It'll give you: Tap (Tapping Mirage)

I've only entered the moves from footbag.org up to 3 adds, so don't go trying to trick it with a Jani Walker, or a Food Processor. :P Also, each move is exactly as it is listed on footbag.org, so some moves start with "set", others with "toe" or "clip" Try both toe/clip AND set if you can't find what you want.

Let me know what you think, and I'll use your comments to improve on it. I've been wanting a tool like this for quite some time, and I'm sure everyone in the "What's this move" threads feels the same.

I hope it's kind of self-explanatory... I did make it in only about an hour. :P

Anyway, it's right here:
http://paradon.org/footbag/whatsThatMove/index.html
Like my shiny new domain name? paradon.org sounds kinda corporate, unless you're into footbag, then it just sounds cool. ;)

I'd done a similar thing. Little java app that connected to .org, leeched the tricks, stored tham all in a DB, and then had a little visual interface to search for tricks with the option of adding unknown tricks to the database.
You'd click on clip > op in [search] and get a list of blurry tricks for example.
It's probably still on my comp somewhere..

but yeah that move calc is pretty cool!

that's pretty cool!

One thing I'd add is the peak indicator ">>", so you don't confuse some
moves with each other, i.e. pixie clipper and drifter, or stepping osis and
torque.

In a similar line of thought, about 5 years ago I wrote some code to score footbag competitions.

I put up a very stripped down demo on the web. It know These Moves

One move per line, 'drop' is the code word for drop.

The first trick of each string is designated with l-TrickName or r-TrickName. l=left side of the body, r=right side of the body.

Code does not contain the dynamic trick generation module, or the aliasing module. It's just a stripped down hack to show that a computer can score shred, using nothing more than the list of tricks that were hit. I didn't optimize this code, or even debug it for the web . . . expect many bugs and errors. The output isn't formatted very well either.

Well if you don't mind, I took the liberty of adding about the first 50 4-adds from footbag.org, up to vortex, to the list. Dont know if it works since the list says the ones i put in arent there, but when I punch them in, it spits out what I put.

Hey, I was bored! 8)

Awesome! That was a feature that I forgot to turn off. ;)

I appreciate it a lot though, as it took me forever to enter just up to the 3-adds. If everyone entered 10 or 20 moves, We'd have them all in no time! Then I can work on the interface and extra features (reverse lookup!)

dude. It's a one liner to parse the .org list into any format you need. Your script doesn't load on my machine, so I can't tell what format would be useful to you.

I already have a reverse look up piece of code you can have . . . that's how my script can score everything from the trick names.

Doesn't load? I can view it in Lynx! I don't understand why it wouldn't load in every browser, if I can view it in a text-only browser...

It's written in PHP, so there's no way you could view the script source. Maybe that's what you mean.

Actually, I think I got served the compiled php. It was absolute line noise using firefox on SuSE linux at work today.

I can see it fine here on my mac though.

The PHP doesn't compile though, it's interpreted. You must have gotten a weird phantom error... You _CAN_ compile PHP with the Zend optimizer, but I don't have it. I actually like to test all of my pages in Lynx, to ensure the lowest level of compatibility. :) I use Debian Linux with Mozilla 1.6 here at home. I prefer the full Mozilla install because I use the mail client constantly, and sometimes the composer.

I use evolution for mail, and firefox for my browser. Must have been a phantom error of sometype. I visit php sites all the time.

My .org move parser is broke as .org changed the table format (again), but I can give you a table for all the tricks they had as of March 24, 2004.

Debian rocks btw, I've been using it for 6years. If I had my way, I wouldn't be on an RPM based distro. I'm stoked to see someone else developing footbag related code.
