Your leg is going to be higher and further back than when in clipper. Other than that hope that Outsider responds. I kicked with him at worlds and he helped me start to get my dragons down.

I've kicked with him before as well. He is sooo good. I have no idea how his foot bends that way, but I assume it comes over time. I guess if you just practice it enough, it will come.

Zach,

Come to Funtastiks next month. Dragons aren't that hard, and they don't require all the much flexibility. Its more about balance. Anyway, come to Funtastiks and I'll teach you and we'll listen to my cool Pink Floyd bootlegs.

If you can't wait that long, try doing an outside stall, and slowly carry the bag behind you till you can see your foot on the other side of your body (I mean by turning your head in the other direction, not by turning your head really far in the direction you were already looking).

I was having some trouble with cramps so I asked Jon, and he gave me this reply. I'm just posting it in case it might help anyone else:

I do not do much stretching lately. However, I used to stretch. I would spend an hour and a half stretching sometimes, when I was feeling patient. Mostly I stretch my upper legs and back (bend over and touch your toes, then stand and hold the top of your foot in your hand and pull it near to your butt there to stretch the knee and front of the upper leg [quadricept stretch]. Repeat these two a couple more times with slight variations in intensity and position). I also like to stretch my calf and achilles tendon. The calf I stretch by standing up straight and putting the sole of my foot against a wall (not flat against the wall, just the sole under the toe; the heel is on the ground at an angle) and then lean toward the wall some, perhaps touching my head to the wall. The achilles tendon I'd stretch by facing the wall, one leg foward (on the ground, toe about half-a-foot from the wall, knee slightly bent) and the other leg back, knee also bent. Put the weight on the back leg as you push with your arms against the wall and you should feel a stretch in the back of your ankle. Alternatively, you can simply squat on the ground, feet flat on the ground, arms between your bent knees, and lean foward a little. This also stretches the achilles. You've gotta keep the heals on the ground for this to work. I also like to stretch the hips inside and out (butterfly stretch, and its opposite).

Specific to the dragons, I guess I'd recommend stretching your ankle as you might to make your clipper flatter, and then do the opposite and stand as though you were holding a bag on a basic outside stall but simply stand there and crank the ankle up . Repeat these two a couple times.

Please do not stretch aggressively. I recommend stretching with only enough intensity to loosen you up a little for that immediate time-period. In my experience, footbag requires you to be limber but NOT uncommonly flexible. I recommend not trying to make yourself more flexible through intense stretching. At worse you might injure yourself, and at best you are probably only wasting your time since you don't need to be that flexible, and probably won't acheive a great deal more flexibility without professional assistance anyway.

One of the best things I've gotten out of stretching is better ankle strength and balance. Here's how: when doing the quad stretch (standing straight up, holding your upper foot in hand and pull the foot near to the butt), try to do this stretch without leaning against or holding on to anything else (that is, simply standing on one leg for thirty seconds or more). Try not to hop, just standing flat-footed while you stretch the leg. It is somewhat difficult and requires a good deal of work from the muscles supporting the ankle. Try this stretch with right foot in right hand, foot pointing straight back behind you, and also try it with right foot in left hand, foot held sideways against the butt. Do this two or three times for each leg (without pulling the leg too hard) and it will loosen up the muscles on the front of the leg above the knee (and below, somewhat) and will gradually increase your ankle strength and balance (very important for Flapper, Dragon, Anchor, Tootsie Rolls, etc.)

More dragon-specific excercising: without a bag, practice flipping your foot from clipper position to dragon position several times, over and over, somewhat quickly (not super-quick). This will help to loosen up your movement from clipper to dragon. The resistance to doing a dragon is mostly a mental one, and one of muscle memory (your muscles probably have no memory of moving into a cross-body outside position). Simply do this back and forth a few times for each foot and pretty soon they will make this flip-flop motion smoothly. Remember, the dragon does not require that much flex in the ankle. Don't try to do all the work with the ankle. Mostly its a matter of how you hold your upper legs. When moving from clipper to dragon, the dragon knee will move backward and away from the support leg, and out toward the other side somewhat too. Stand up straight too (somewhat, not totally straight).

Doing this on both sides is important for many reasons, but at least for this: if you are always doing this on one side, you will be craning your neck over to look in one direction all the time. I used to have neck problems more often. Once I had spent more time doing dragons on the other side, I was stretching my neck to both sides more often, and my neck has felt better much more often. A stiff neck makes freestyle very painfull.

I was wondering about the names of some tricks so I guess this is as good of place as any to ask.

Osis ending on dragon instead of clipper.

A butterfly osis ending on dragon.
set >> op out > [half spin] > same dragon

also I'm getting close to these and am wondering if anyone (Jon?) has hit them:
fairy swirling >> dragon osis (all one trick >> to indicate peak)
and pixie ducking butterfly osis dragon

I've decided that one of those is going to be my first six add. I hope some of this made sense.

at worlds, jon taught me to do butterfly osis ending on dragon. It's a great trick, so styley and awesome looking. it doesn't really have a name, it's kind of a hippy dyno ending on dragon. So, dyno dragon, maybe? dragon osis is just that.

Help with butterfly dragon (firefly?)

Post by dblthnk84 »

My dragons are getting almost decient, and I have hit this move a couple times. I just can't get anywhere near consistant with it. For my dragons to be consistant I catch the bag rather high (above my knee) and it is hard to get a clean dex and have my leg positioned correctly to catch it. Any tips for this, or is it just something that I'm going to have to work out over time? After I do the dex my foot is slanted and the bag shoots out backwards.

Tips on Dragon/ Sole/ other unusual surfaces

Post by F[uns]tylin' Eclectic »

I've been fudging around with unusual surfaces for a long time, but I've recently learned that I can actually work them into my style. I'm pretty good with my soles and getting better with my dragons. I recently hit:

 dragon BSOS
 spinning dragon
 reverse swirling dragon
 dragon> reverse swirl
 reverse swirling xbd sole
 clipper> xbd sole> repeat (strong side: x8, weakside: x3)...

you get the idea. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips for stronger dragon, sole, or any other unusual surfaces? Or maybe ideas for interesting tricks to do out of these? Thanks!

my best tip for this type of stuff would be to watch Gordon Bevier and Nick Landes videos for inspiration. I also do some in my videos. Imitate, then Innovate. You have good skills and if you just let your creativity flow, you will come up with some great stuff. I recommend you learn cloud stall > roll to osis.

here is some cool stuff (most i have hit some i just thought and what to try but i am hurt :( )
swirling ss flapper
pendulous whirling ss sole( whirring if you cant the iffy first dex)
flapper> stepping butterfly flapper (i am close)
flapper> spinning flapper
pendulous ducking sole stall
pendulous nuclear sole
pendulous ducking flapper
sole stall> opp sole stall
sole stall> whirling rake
sole stall> gyro flapper
stepping far flapper
fairy ss sole
pixie far flapper

My tips would be as follows. I personally think that these types of moves are so much harder flipside because of how strange they are. However i have read your blog and you do some busking or something along those lines and these are crowd pleasers from my experiences. Also make sure you are bending your knee on both flappers and sole stalls and really cushion the stall. That can not be stressed enough.

Ps Try heel stalls
pss i really hope my footbag language is close

Matt: Thanks a lot dude. I've never really took much time to watch a whole video of Gordon or Nick, but now that I've checked out a few of their vids each, I really like what I see. They're both ridiculous, but my style is leaning more toward Gordon's. I saw him hit cloud> opp swirl, and I knew I could hit it, just never thought about it, and sure enough, I got up and nailed it on the third try, except I hit it with rev. swirl. I tried cloud> roll to osis and I hit it. Cool-looking trick. I wouldn't have thought about that. And thanks for the encouraging words, that sorta stuff definitely motivates me a lot.

Jokse: Thanks for the input, but I can't drifter yet :P If/when I learn them, I'll give it a shot.

007: Awesome list dude. It definitely gave me a lot of ideas and I'll keep trying the harder ones once I improve more.

I just hit knee bump> ducking flapper :D

and I tried the most obvious that I still hadn't thought about. Sole> opp sole : Footed, but need to keep working on it. Very interesting to do. Looks awesome too. Definitely a good list of crowd pleasers :)
