Best Guitarists

Hey, who do you think the best guitarist in the world is at the moment.

As mentioned in another topic - I go with Tom Morrelo from RATM and audioslave. He's won a lot of awards including the MTV award for the best guitarist like 3 or 4 years in a row.

MTV awards are, personally speaking, not really awards, but just popular vote awards.

And I was going to say jimmy page, but I don't even know if he is still alive

yeah some of those are definitly awesome guitarists. However I did say "at the moment" - so if there were a best guitarist in the world comp tomorrow and all the guitarists playing different styles showed up and competed and the juding system was perfect and whatever - who would win?

Some 5000 classical guitarists would cream Tom Morrelo, that's for sure.

Guessing a pop guitarist's place in a competition such as this is like guessing how Steve Blough would do in a perfectly judged footbag competition.

(Exageration, to be sure, but not completely.)

I'm talking about any guitarist.

I have to say musical elietism really pisses me off. I've been to John Williams concerts and I've got a friend who is one of the best classic guitarists in Australia - and they are good - there is no doubt. But it's a different style and they work as hard at their type of music as anyone else. If you look at it from a statistical point of view - far more people take up contemporary styles of guitar play than take up classic styles so it is very unlikely that the most talented guitarist would play a classic style of guitar.

I really enjoy listening to a lot of different styles of music and I see them as different ways of expression. They are just as valid as each other and this view that one style is better than another is a fucked up view in my opinion. I wish that people could accept that different cultures are not better or worse - just different and I think that saying that one culture is better than another shows both your ignorance and your intolerance. Just because you can't understand something - there is no need to dislike it.

Brian May of Queen.

I'm not really a big fan, and he's not really the best, but he's got a very distinctive tone, which I think has something to do with this little story: he dropped out of his PhD Astrophysics program to join a rock band; he made his own pick-ups and he and his father disassembled a centuries-old hearth in their anscestral home to to get the wood for the body of the guitar. I think thats about the coolest guitar story out there.

Otherwise, my favorite is David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. He's not the best in any sort of technical way, but he's inimitable and amazingly ethereal.

Music isn't like some kind of foot race. Being the fastest doesn't make you the best.
