Its strange that technology has gotten to the point where people complain about not having a dvd rom on their computers...haha

I don't know if this has anything to do with your playback problems, but possibly, if you don't have "progressive scan" as a label on your dvd player, it may not possibly work?? Just a thought. Not all dvd players come with progressive scan and that may be your problem. Invest in a 70 dollar panasonic dvd player like i have and you can play anything :) If you have a 30 dollar dvd player, i'm guessing, you got what you payed for.

Progressive scan has nothing to do with it. Progressive scan is a technology that when the video is shown on screen the lines all appear at once. When you are normal watching say The Discovery Channel. The images appears in alternating line to fast for the human eye to see. With progressive scan all the lines appear at once making the image look way way better. And progressive scan only works on HD tv's. So if you don't have any HD tv there is not point in getting one cause it wont look any different. I might be picking up a nice dvd player with progressive scan this week. Only $50, I don't have a HD tv, but atleast I will have a dvd player to use it on once I get one(hopefully).

There are two big problems that most of us in the U.S. face when buying DVDs from overseas. I'll try to address them both and hopefully clear up some of the confusion:

1. Region Codes. To give distributors greater control over DVD distribution schedules and DVD content, the world DVD market is broken up into 6 regions. So, for example, a DVD bought in America is a Region 1 DVD, a DVD bought in the UK is a Region 2 DVD, a DVD bought in Thailand is a Region 3 DVD, and so on. The big problem here is that most DVD players have a form of lockout technology so that a DVD bought in one region will not play on a DVD player bought in a different region. In other words, if you live in the States and have a Region 1 player, there is a good chance that the import DVD of BATTLE ROYALE 2 that you got from Japan will not play in your player. Now of course, there are many ways around this. First, many DVDs can be made so that they are Region-Free or Region 0. Basically, a DVD producer has the abilty to say, "screw the regions, I want anyone to be able to play my DVD." An example is DVDs purchased from Hong Kong. For the most part, HK DVDs are Region-Free so pretty much anyone in the world can buy the latest Johnnie To, Wong Kar-wai, or Twins DVD from Hong Kong without any worries. I'm *assuming* most footbag DVDs (since they are made by small, indie companies) are Region-Free. Another way around the region problem is to purchase a Region-Free DVD Player, a player that uses internal technology to hack the region code and play any DVD. Region-Free players are becoming more and more popular and are now quite easy to find. Many companies like Panasonic, Jaton, Malata, and Daewoo make great Region-Free players that can be easily found online or at local electronics stores (I bought mine here: http://www.hkflix.com/home.asp). A third option is to use your computer DVDROM. Many computers play DVDs from any region. If not, one can easily find Sharware that will essentially turn your computer DVDROM drive into a Region-Free player hence allowing you to play anything on your computer (just do a quick Google search and you should find plenty of options).

2. PAL vs. NTSC. Now this is probably going to be the big kicker for most of us here in the States. The MPEG video on a DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted for one of two mutually incompatible television systems, PAL or NTSC (there is also a format known as SECAM, but that's not important for now). These formats differ in terms of vertical frequency, picture dimensions and pixel aspect ratio (720x480 vs. 720x576), display frame rate (29.97 vs. 25), and surround audio options. The bottom line is that there are two kinds of DVDs: "NTSC DVDs" and "PAL DVDs." In the States we use NTSC, in most of Europe PAL is used. Almost all PAL DVD players will play both types of DVDs, however (sadly) most NTSC players will NOT play PAL DVDs. Again, what this means is that most of our U.S. DVD players will NOT play a European PAL DVD. Again, there are many ways around this. Most computers will play anything and will have no problem playing a PAL DVD. For those with some money, there are many DVD players that do PAL to NTSC conversion (in fact, these players are getting cheaper and cheaper, a decent player that does the conversion can now be had for under $100). Just look for DVD players that claim they can convert PAL to NTSC. There are other problems with PAL as well. Many have probably heard of the notorious 4% speed-up, but that's a whole other beast.

I guess the moral is "caveat emptor", let the buyer beware. Be careful when buying a PAL DVD. Make sure your player can handle it and always check Region Codes.

hope this helps,
Matt Kain

Quick note: Progessive Scan is a way of encoding and decoding more scan lines within an image. So if you have a Progressive Scan DVD and a Progressive Scan DVD Player, you will, in theory, be able to get a better quality image (very important for people with big screen TVs).

So... that was a cool explanation Matt. But if I bought CL from Freedom Footbags or Monsterhack in the NTSC format, would it play glitch free in my DVD player, or have other people had glitches with the NTSC format? I think that's what Shaun was asking.

David,

I cannot speak authoritatively about the NTSC master of CL since I don't have it yet (I ordered mine yesterday - I can let you know when it arrives). It should be ok. There really is no reason why a professional PAL to NTSC conversion should have any problems. If there are glitches, they are more likely to be due to a problem in the mastering rather than anything else (which could happen to *any* DVD no matter where it is from). My hunch is that it is safe... but having not seen it, I don't really know.

The bigger issue seems to be Sick.03. If it is only out in PAL, then most people in the States will not be able to watch it except for on a computer (which is fine for many of us). However, Europeans, Australians, etc. should have no problem with the Sick.03 DVD.

hope all is well,
Matt Kain

Maybe, the people who produced Sick 03(forgot who), could make a master NTSC copy and send it to say Daryl and then he could make more copies and then sell some and also ship some out to Eric to sell to. Also if you have a dvd burner. Which are dirt cheap now, even in Canada. You could rip it to your pc and then burn it to a dvd. Then it should play fine if it is a PAL dvd, you need to play on a NTSC player.

I just wanted to say that I have Sick 03 and I think it is amazingly, thouroughly and utterly SICK. There is soooo much glow footbag (about 30-40 minutes of the 83 minute video) and it is done VERY professionally. The video is easy to watch all the way through (you just want to keep watching, and watching...) I can't even watch a full hour of normal shred videos. The music fits so well to everything. The video game section!! I love it. Vasek's section... Oh shit, I've watched it so many times. Fabulous angles, excelent transisitons and amazing shred. They also have Worlds 03 routines from Vasek (plus his semi-finals!), Ryan, and Yacine FROM 2 ANGLES!!!

Ya...

Yeah my copy has just arrived and it's awesome!!! So far I'd have to rate it as the best footbag video I've seen - amazing footage and very proffesionally made. It's the kind of video that could be used a great deal to promote the sport of footbag.

Unfortuantly my computer sucks - especially playing dvds and it has a lot of problems watching the dvd. I'm pretty sure it's not the dvd since the player has the same problems with most dvds that play perfectly on other players.

Defintly a cool movie though and everybody should get it! If it won't work, move to Australia and you can watch it all the time

The Japanese have one. You can buy from Naranja (http://www.naranja.co.jp/) , and I assume there would be no problems. But probably not worth it considering the Japanese price, as well as shipping and whatnot. But yeah, NTSC copies of Sick 03 exist already.

Are PAL copies of Sick.03 available for sale online? Jeremy, where did you get your copy? I have no problems playing PAL and would really like to get my hands on this DVD. If anyone knows of an email or a website where I can purchases a Sick.03 DVD please post. I saw that PlanetFootbag has it but through my crude deciphering of German it appeared that they only have it on VHS (which I do not want). Someone must know where to get it (yet mysteriously no one has posted where they are getting their copies... it's as if Footbag Claus is bringing random nuggets of hackey-sack goodness to all you UnAmerican kneelers).

Ken, how many US dollars is the Japaese NTSC version? Is it really that expensive?

Thanks,

4725 yen, tax included. That`s like, 43 USD or so, and doesn`t include shipping from Japan. Kinda hefty.

Oh yeah, and I think the DVD really kicks ass. I even filmed 15 second clips of it on my cellphone so I can watch some strings at work (like Vasek`s 11 unique fearless string). The Cellule-X songs are great.

I know that Fred and Pierre still have a lot of DVD PAL versions in boxes at their places. They're both still on holidays though but coming back late august. AND THEY PLAN ON SELLING ALL THEY HAVE :) So here's what I suggets you do to get a copy:
- PM me for their contact info, they can arrange to send you one after paypal payment etc..
- Come to the 6th French Open hosted in Paris on the 11th of Nov (or get a friend to get you a copy) they'll be selling lots there.

as for NTSC copies, they told me that once back in Paris they'll look into how much it'll be to make copies of the NTSC master (couldbe hefty though).

Sick.03 ROCKS!!!!!

There isn't much more I can say about it. It's the
best edited video available, making it a great
vid for both the newbie and pros. It lacks the
super raw difficulty of Champs League, but
makes up for it in presentation.

On a side note, Lovely's vids are also exceptional!

Lastly, please take a moment to check out my thread
on the Freedom Footbags Freestyle Footbag Fundamentals

Get Sick.03 now at www.freedomfootbags.com :)
