It's a method of preserving eggs in clay. It's rather common ingredient in Chinese cooking. The yolk ends up with the consistency and smell of soft cheese. The white becomes gelatinous, similar to cooked hard boiled eggs and doesn't really have much of a taste. It's not actually a thousand years old. They usually preserve it for several weeks to several months.

thousand year old eggs are the horror that my nightmares are filled with. They are very strong in smell and it isn't the most pleasant smell of them all.. it is one of those acquired taste that you wouldn't be too sad about not having.

I have also heard this one from a former culinary arts student but he said it was human urine .. they would bury the egg and than urinate on it every so often.. yum. Good thing they aren't made like that (anymore).

Raw Sea Urchin is sort of strange.. I felt slightly disgusted the first time I ate some but I would eat it again

Kangaroo Meat is sorta disgusting, atleast for others I guess. I visited friends in Australia and had to try some. Now when I tell people about this experience they look at me like I just ate their dog or something.

something french that I have come to love. Any kind of strong smelling/tasting blue fungus cheese with jelly on bread or a cracker.. yum!!!

Do any countries use breastmilk for dairy products?

I wouldn't be able to eat any of those if so

Durian is the king of fruits. But ya'll would probably think it's nasty. It's very odourous.

Yum yum! I just bought 2 from the grocery store.

Not allowed on the metro in Malaysia because it's so smelly.

Stinky tofu smells like a dirty jock strap that's been left all summer to rot. Appetizing eh? The stinkier the better! Deep fried and on a stick covered in hot sauce. Here's a picture of a street in Taiwan that has many many stands that only sell stinky tofu. It tastes a lot better than it smells.

As for the smell of durian, it's kind of hard to describe. Some people hate the smell and find it vile, but personally, I think it smells good. Almond?

Actually, I didn't mind 1000-year egg.
And those squid tentacles look delicious!
Most of this other stuff is disgusting. I think I've tried lots of the stuff you posted, Peng, but things like blood cubes I just can't get into because of what it is, not necessarily the taste. Like chicken feet. Ick!

Max seems to be the king of disgusting foods.
Tripe is another that is gross more because I know what it is.

I would guess that the first person to ever see a lobster never thought to eat it but rather stay the fuck away from it. I actually like crab & lobster on occasion.

funny story from when i was in japan.
Ken, my self, and i think it was kenzo, morio and kaita went looking for a place for dinner and wound up in a ramen noodle house. i don't read a lick of japanese, and instead of having ken explain what was in all the dishes i just asked him to get me one with the works. So when it comes out, there's heaps of stuff in it, much of which i recognized and much of which i did not. most stuff doesn't turn me off, and i asked ken what something was out of curiosity, not disgust. he misinterpreted my question and said "eat it first, tell me if you like it, and then i'll tell you what it is." It turned out to be a good system for the rest of the trip, ha.
