Jeremy wrote:Yeah I'm sure he'd make BAP - but to make bap you need to go to big tournaments - I think on that criteria Jason just isn't good enough :P

This is why BAP is so silly - because of the term "bap quality"

Also re: 30 guiltless. I think there are lots of people - myself included - that could pretty easily hit 30 guiltless most of the time- especially if I only did moves and combos I could rely on - but that would be boring to watch and I don't think I am good enough to be in BAP just yet (if I wanted to be in it). I don't think you can set particular goals for BAP - the truth is you'll get into BAP if the people who are in BAP like you and think you're good at footbag. It might be a fun little group and it may have helped footbag once when things were very informal and lacking professionalism but these days I feel it's completely irrelevant to the sport of footbag.

With fear of sounding like a character from the Matrix - it's all about purpose. The purpose of BAP is to congratulate good footbaggers. The purpose of competition is to recognise good footbaggers. They both serve that purpose well - however BAP reflects footbag as a past time - which it is and if that's the important part of it for you - great. Competition reflects footbag as a sport. BAP has nothing to do with footbag as a sport.

The thing that has held footbag back for so long is its image - which is the image of a past time not a sport. In Australia (and many other countries) sport is taken seriously while past times are not. Past times are flying kites or collecting stamps - worthy activities and I don't have a problem with them (well stamp collecting is a bit nerdy :P) but not taken very seriously. Skateboarding is taken seriously, rock climbing is taken seriously. Even chess is taken seriously. By taken seriously I mean - shown on tv - given sponsorship - given government funding - has books written about it.

My big goal in footbag (apart from personal skill goals) is to make footbag a real professional sport – so that all the players that spend countless hours of hard work (and a lot of the time it is hard work – it’s not fun – it might be rewarding) can get recognised for it – so that they can be appreciated for the time and effort they put in to improve themselves.

I know that some people would like footbag to stay a little underground community – where everybody knows everybody and are friends. That’s great. I see no reason why that would change if footbag suddenly became a pro sport. There would still be footbag forums – some of which could be kept underground – maybe even invite only. I will still be friends with all the people who post on this forum.

I’m not saying BAP is wrong or that it hurts footbag – just that it doesn’t help footbag anymore. It’s irrelevant. That’s why I don’t want to be in BAP. I don’t think I’d turn down a nomination to be honest – I just wouldn’t care. I’m proud to be a footbagger and I’m proud to have the respect of other footbaggers. I don’t need to divide myself away from other footbaggers of a lesser ability to have that respect or to be proud of it. I’m more proud of my IFPA membership than I would ever be of being in BAP.

Hmm... That was more of a rant than I intended :P - I'm the person that started this topic 8O - I still enjoy discussing who will get in BAP - it's like discussing who will win Big Brother - pointless but somehow intriguing... :P

In my opinion people discuss who are the few players whose induction can't be passed over.

Isn't it?

Otherwise your post made me thinking about the sense of BAP.Indeed senseless but useful. I guess it is an honour that legends of our small sport told you you are good at footbag. Otherwise they will do the same when you visit them in a circle and duck your barraging set - so it is the same I guess.

One more thing : in my opinion you cannot standardize a holistic impression you got when you watch anyone and say : oh this guy kicks ass.

Maybe you can try to find criterias which will suit the "holistic " aspect of the game --- good luck!

btw jeremy thanks for your rant

Jeremy I completely disagree with you. I've already argued about this before...BAP is very healthy for the sport. It's like the NHL or NBA for footbag. Not only that, it gives something to strive for, recognition for all that hard work we put in. I play footbag for myself, but I get better because I have a goal in mind, a level of achievment, and that is BAP. The purpose of BAP is not to congratulate but to recognize hard earned ninja skills.
BAP is an integral part of footbag and should stay that way. It helps footbag because it breeds excellence.

As far as women, Tina Aeberli should make BAP very soon, shes getting so good so fast. Lise Thygesen also gets my vote!

I agree with that and I love the NHL/NBA reference, the only difference is that we get to play and mingle with BAP.

Well, that, and the NHL/NBA/NFL is composed of real athletes, as opposed to hippies.

Yeah, eff NIP, SuperBAP is the next level.

Only the most intensely elite can ever join our ranks.

PS you have to be able to hit SUPERBAP DRILL to get into SuperBAP and it's a doozie that most of the best could never touch, so don't even bother asking what it is. :x

BAP is not like NBA/NHL at all - BAP players always compete against non BAP players - BAP is not some kind of league that only competes or plays with its self. BAP is best compared with an old boys club. - It's just a social club of players who think they are really good.

This conversation is getting a bit off the topic.

I think that getting to BAP is like "getting noble" (nowadays, not a hundred years ago). Definitely an honor, though in normal life it has almost no meaning. I don't consider it as an "old boys club", though I don't consider it as NHL either.

What I think would be good for the sport would be "guest competitions". (They are used in snowboarding so I'll use the terms too here:) The best players (maybe some BAP members, maybe not) are invited there automatically to compete but the "rookies" can get there too by winning in advance decided competitions, where they get a wild card for the "great competition" (in snowboarding it's called "TTR" = "Ticket to Ride").
Then there'd be no Hall of Fame like BAP, but the players making it to the Final competition would get the same respect (maybe...). The players would also change more every year.

This idea needs to be better planned before it could be done. Also the expenses of gathering players may be hard to get covered, cause there are so few sponsors. The places should also be planned carefully to get some audience to the places too.

Man, I really shouldn`t post in this thread when I`m drunk (Awamori!).

But some thoughts and comments: The only woman currently in BAP is Carol Wedermeyer. Sam Conlon was never inducted. I think this year there is a great chance that at least one shredita will get invited.

If there were a betting pool for who was making BAP 05, the safe money would be on Mikko, for various reasons. I also would be very surprised if at least one swiss player didn`t make it.

You should hear some of BAPs thoughts on BAP... last year I overheard some conversations which had me in stitches.

The NBA comparison I dont get at all... but if BAP offered me an NBA jersey with my name on it, who knows, I might accept. I sell out so easily. Drink Pepsi everybody! Shit, I`d probably settle for a Rasheed Wallace Pistons jersey...

In all seriousness though... if you are truly good at footbag, you already know it. You don`t need 50+ hippies and high school students to tell you you are good... you should already know it. Get some self-confidence people!

Aight yos... gonna go drink some more. My first drunken modifed post! :D  <-- not embarassed... thats just my asian flush.

Hmm maybe we should all stop posting videos of ourselves on modified? Or stop posting in the 200 page long "new moves" thread?

I don't see whats wrong with recognition. You guys make SUCH a big issue out of such a non-factor in footbag. It just feels good getting formal recognition by players who were the best in there time.

Here is an honest post which, in no way, do I want to reflect gender biased views . . but i have to make it.

I am confused as to why Carol Wedemeyer is in BAP? Was she inducted because of her skill level at footbag or was she inducted based on her skill level as compared to other women? She is a great player, but, as compared to other (many male) shredders, she is a middle of the pack guiltless player. This, for me, raises questions as to whether players like Verena of Lise, who are certainly as good as, or better, shredders than Carol, should be inducted into BAP. They certainly are better than most female shredders out there right now, but are their skill levels BAP level? Well, I guess that is determined by the prescedent set by the induction of Carol Wedemeyer, which again leads me to the fololowing question?

Was Carol crowned BAP due to her skill level as compared to all shredders or due to her skill level as compared to the other women shredders at the time?

I hope that a knowledgeable person on this matter would respond, Thanks.

Well, at the time now she, like many other BAP members, are just middle of the road guiltless players. She wasn't inducted this year. She was inducted a while ago. I think I remember reading that when she was inducted she beat out a lot of men and came pretty high in competition. Although, I could be wrong. (I'm pretty sure there's an article of shreditas.com that talks about it, but the server is being lame right now and I can't double check) Anyway, I don't think Carols induction and the premises she was inducted on should bear any weight in the potential induction of Verena or Lise. Neither of them are BAP level right now, but I think they will be. I'm interested to see footage of them from Euros, assuming both of them make it.

I guess no women will be as good as men ....

In tennis for example and most of any other athletic sport women are not as good as men.

Do not get me wrong but when our sport will get bigger and bigger the chances of women will decrease very fast.

Do not get me wrong girls you are much better than me but there are tons of other shredders who are improving faster than you.

Moreover there are much more male shredders than female which decreases the chance of a female top 5 competitor too.

If females should be inducted due to the fact that they dominate they world championships than I guess hmmmm Verena Tina Isabell and Lise got good chances ...

Yeah, compared to the men in the sport I don't think there is a single woman anywhere close to BAP this year, but conversely I don't believe that women will never be better than men. I think with the increase in ability and confidence of female players we could easily see a female Vasek down the road. Why not?
