Whirls and knees...

Post by DaBananaMann »

hey guys,

im just starting to mess around with whirls, mostly from outside sets to start. im doing pretty well so far, hitting it roughly 40%, but last night (2nd night iv drilled them) my knee hurt for quite a bit after my shred. i do plenty of stretchs before and after.

is this normal? its deffinitly a differant dex move than other tricks i do, so is this a "break in" pain that im stuck with as i build it up? or am i probably doing something wrong?

thanks

I never had any pains doing just regular clipper-set whirls, so I can't say if that's normal. However, a good piece of advice is if something is hurting you, don't do it for a while. Maybe try it again once your knees are feeling better but definately don't chalk it up to 'breakin in pains' or you could end up seriously injuring yourself. As a note, though, generally whirls of the non-symposium variety should not hurt if done correctly. At least, that's what I have always been told. Make sure to watch videos on flipsider or hackrifice and be sure you're doing them exactly as shown. It helps if you can video tape yourself doing whirls and check your form.

Treat your knees right, man....

I would say if whirl is hurting your knee your definately not alone. I've heard this from a lot of people. Try to do it in a different style. Maybe try setting it more behind you. It's different for everyone. You just have to figure out what style works best for you. Watch Vasek when he does whirl. His clipper foot is cranked throughout the whole move. He keeps the set a little more behind him. And the dex is almost mirage like. Kind of an in to out dex instead of a front to back dex. It's hard to explain but I hope that helps. And if it's hurting your knee every time, DONT DO IT. It's just not worth it to mess your legs up forever.

peace.

Yeah, Kevin Crowley did a lot of moves that were hurting his knees, so he had to develop his own knee rehabilitation regimen (sp?). Now he's back down to tiltless moves (which is still sick), but he won't be at the level he was until SJFF 5 probably. Well, that is if that bastard stops doing 4's and 5's.

holy shit glenn, finally you NOW post on modified? :P

by the by, you need your name in your sig. good job on the whirls (by the way, i had already read about it in your xanga...sorry if it ruined the suprise  )

seeyah in like 10 minutes....

but yeah, whirls kill knees, but it helps if you do less of a whipping motion and more of a straightening/bending motion.

I had this problem and finally figured out what was causing it.

I found that I was lifting my ankle higher than my knee during the whirl. This was over extending my knee's capability.

The solution is to lift your whole leg higher in the air. Your knee should always be higher than your foot for a whirl. If you are having to whirl higher than that, then mostly likely you have great flexibility, or you are performing the dex incorrectly.

This was my problem anyways, your problem may be different.

What might help you is to practice the motion underwater, not in your bathtub at home :P but in a large enough swimming pool. So your legs, knees get used to the motion but you don't put so much stress on them.
It help me with the double atw and paradon movement, it's worth a try.

I made it a point to never learn whirls because the pro's told me to
"WATCH OUT FOR SAME LEG DOUBLE DEXTERITES AND WHIRLS"

If you try to avoid whirls you'll still do enough on accident.

PS Whirl is deadly, or atleast dangerous.
