How does a sense of humor develop? Are there necessary stages? Is it possible for one to go 18 years without one and then develop one?

As soon as you are happy you will also be humorous...It's all about the mood if you ask me...

You won't be able to think of anything funny whatsoever when you're feeling down and everything pisses you off ...And even if you shut your mouth due to your bad mood people will notice it and they will feel worse too :? ...

But if you are perfectly well and the sun seems to be shining only for you then you will crack jokes and be humorous I swear...You don't really have to do anything for being funny like trying hard to find jokes etc...

and you shouldn't lie to yourself being in a good mood when you aren't :D

The life is too short to spend your remaining days on earth in lugubriousness...

I tend to be the opposite. I want to believe I come up with my best material when I'm ranting. I think it's just my way of relieving stress. Maybe humor is like art... different people will be inspired or motivated by different things. Some people are just naturally more gifted than others. Some people just may not like your particular style or technique. Some people just can't draw.

Yeah that's an interesting point of view

But if you are mostly humorous when you're ranting then you might be offending others ??

I know what you mean because I once wrote a complaint about the organisation of the Open Air at our place and some weeks ago I reread it and I was like : "wow this is soo funny...ironic etc." ...I can say funny things when I'm ranting like you but mostly they are rather offending....

nice post anyway :D

Humor discussion on another forum : http://www.sojourn.org/forums/index.php ... =2&page=-1

Not sure if these are the stages you want, check out the site, "Typically, humor involves four stages, the setup, the paradox, the dénouement, and the release. The setup involves the presentation of the original content material and the first interpretive frame. The paradox involves the creation of the additional frame or frames. The dénouement is the point at which the initial and subsequent frames are shown to coexist, creating tension. The release is the enjoyment registered by the audience in the process of realization and the release resulting therefrom. " - http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Anthro ... /Humor.htm

I'm sure you have a sense of humor, you just have to expose yourself to comedy and you will get it. And I think its possible to get one at any age.

Yes, there is a high probability that will occur. Ranting does not always have to be about a person though. The other day I was bitching about how I was 2 hours late to get to a shred session. I was not blaming or complaining about anyone in particular, it was just an unfortunate chain of events.

I figure most stand-up comedians are paid to complain. That's a cool job.

I'll second that :D

Actually stand-up comedian is a very cool job anyway....you can do and tell whatever you want because in some way nothing is prohibited as a comedian (at least it seems like nothing is :D )...

I mean the 2nd world war was terrible and Hitler and the Nazis etc...But jokes about that are very very dark humour but still they are sometimes terribly funny  and if you're not a well known comedian you can get quite a few problems if you make fun of it...

Another interesting matter is :

Did it ever occur to you that stand-up comedians are always very intelligent people ?
