What's with all these new users joining modified, not making any posts, and posting a porn site as their personal website. I've noticed like 4 new people posting porn as they're website, but I've only check out like 5 different user's sites. Also modified has gained like 200 users in the past month, is that normal?
Am I out if my mind, and should just delete this topic, or have other people noticed this too?

Yeah the mod/admin team noticed this a while ago and we've been trying to stop it. Brad has been deleting a lot of the new members as they join but that's obviously not enough.
Something we might introduce is for new members to need verification from an admin or mod before being able to join but we're not sure if that would actually work (since we'd have no way of knowing if they're legit or not.)
Anyway just ignore them and don't click on the links in their profiles (because that might encourage them) and hopefully we can deal with the problem.

tons of sites that you have to sign up for are now using a jumbled looking .gif of letters that needs to be copied into a box below as a verification. a picture is used for the same reason we dont put @ or .com for our email addresses on our posts, i.e. to prevent getting spammed. its basically a password to block generators that do exactly whats been happening. i dont know if its hot bodies (real people) behind these usernames, but if they are all seemingly a random combination of numbers and letters, i would suggest incorperating this as a required entry field on the join page.

Yeah I've seen that a lot, I think it would be a great way to help prevent that sort of thing.

That won't prevent mom & pop porn companies from posting. Only the more advanced IT savoy companies.
Verification of anything on the internet is difficult due to the back end process submitting the forms.
I'm a Web designer and have opted to use mailto forms like the one used to order bags on blurryworld for 2 reasons.
1.) Since there is no backend process submitting the form, then it cannot be abused to spam my company through mass hacking.
2.) Mailto forms require that the user has an email address setup on their computer for regular everyday email. When the form is submitted it is actually and email that is sent from the users computer, not from a script. You have to physically push the send button from within your own email program. If you don't have one, the form will not work. This forces the user of the form to not only send an email, but now I have an actual email address, not a fabricated one that can be entered in the form as an input text box. So the email we receive here comes from actual people.
It seems archaic but it works and works well. We rarely if ever see an email address that is randomly generated.
Keep modified spam free!

When a new member signs up, Mike and myself will get e-mails alerting us that someone wants to become a registered user. They will not be able to post until we review and activate their account. The process takes very little time really. As long as Mike and I check our e-mails regularly, which we do, then there won't really be any long waits to get into a new account.shreddaily wrote:Care to lay some more info about this splint.
