Screen captures? (No video)

Can any of you guys recommend software for capturing stills from videos? I've tried a couple of different screen capture programs, but they refuse to capture the actual content of the video, and just leave a black square there insteat.

Do I have to use a video editing program such as premier?

I watch every video with Windows Media Classic. There's a super easy "save image" option that automatically saves the frame paused at, and moves one frame up, so it makes it easy if you're into some kind of animation editing, or something.

you can also do it with windows movie maker and save a picture from the preview screen, although it will only be 320x240 or whatever

Capturing still images is very easy using any editing software. Just make sure that your preview screen is 720x576 (or 720x480 in NTSC) or you won't get a full resolution image. If you are capturing stills from widescreen material, you should turn on pixel aspect ratio correction on the preview screen.
Usually screen capturing doesn't deinterlace the image so you need to use some photo editing software (such as Photoshop) to deinterlace the picture (go filters-video-deinterlace). This doesn't have to be done if you are capturing from progressive material.
If you don't know any good editing software, I would recommend Vegas 6, you can capture a still by clicking the floppy disk button above the preview screen.

you could also use virtualdub (freeware)

you can save any sequence of a video in .bmp stills.
i used it for picture series from net-practice to illustrate the moves.

shift + command +f4 works fine for me, but if I wanted to get fancy I would use gimp and capture the windows without borders.
