lifting wieghts and footbag

Post by Troyson »

i didnt really know where to post this so i decided to put it here..if there is a more fitting category move it elsewhere...

anyway, lately i have began lifting weights and trying to get bigger and while doing this a question came to mind. Normally before a workout its good to do cardio before, then lift after, and i was wondering if the same concept would work with footbag. Basically, i was wondering if when im trying to get bigger, is it better if i have a shred session before or after i start lifting. I would like the pros and cons of each, and which method would give me the best results. any help would be great.

are you lifting for upper body only? If so, then yes, shred then lift. If your doing it specifically to cross train for footbag, then I think mixing it in with streching as well would be the best bet. So in a Solo session

Play for 5-10 minutes
Stretch 5-10 minutes
Build up a good sweat shredding
stretch
lift(alternating upper and lower body excersizes)
stretch
Shred
stretch
lift(alternating upper and lower body excersizes)
Shred
stretch
lift(alternating upper and lower body excersizes)
and so on

or at least this is what I might do.

get most your strength training in after you shred - or if you play later in the day, do ur strength training in the morning. Have a protien powder supplement before you shred [if you plan on getting more exercise later], it's been saving me a lot of pain I used to get when i was finished shredding and made it harder to do anything else afterward. stretch after u play footbag of course, and a bit after ur initial footbag warmup, before u go at it fully. What Xain posted sounds like it'd work, but it sure is involved. Although, in my opinion, a lower body work out in the middle of a shred session could be prone to disaster, for example; doing squats mildly incorrectly and straining the knees improperly and going back to shred could definitly blow out ones knees. I think if you're putting on weight to your upper body and play footbag every day your lower body will keep up rather well anyhow, riding a bike before shredding is pretty good too :) hopefully u live somewhere warmer than here. make sure to carboload when u're done so u've got energy to build muscle.

The most important part is your diet. If you doni't have the right diet, and you won't get the best results from your training. a Protein shake is a very good idea. look at Protein Designer Whey. Its supposedly the best body building protein shake out there.

I use it all the time, but mostly for the vitamins and such. i mix it with other things like Spectrum vitamin shake, and Flax Seed. I used to do alot of heavy lifting before i got into footbag. MY friend and i were into Olympic lifting and strong man lifting. I actually gained muscle quite fast by eating right and training hard.

check the cholesterol of the whey, i know it's been lowered to like 3% from 20% - i donno when this happened but years ago it used to be high cholesterol. whey is probly the best protien supplement, i've tried soy too but it doesn't seem to do as much. Just make sure to get your protien from the usual sources as well.

What is your priority, getting big or getting good at footbag?

I can't believe anyone would tell you to play footbag before lifting. This in my opinion is riduclously counter productive. Even too much stretching before lifting has negative effects on lifting ability so what do you think lots of cardio before lifting will do?
If your focuse is getting good at footbag then ignore this post, otherwise...

Never play footbag before lifting. Infact if you want to get big don't do cardio. Do you think those guys on the magazines hit the weights then the stair master right after so they can get huge.
Getting big comes down to three things: diet, rest, training
If you want to get big you need to consume more calories then you expend. As simple as that. Are you already consuming 500 - 1000 more calories then you use in a day? If not do you think playing footbag (cardio) is gonna help this balance?
When you see those huge guys in magazines they have their diet down, their rest down, and their workout perfected. Also a healthy dose of genetics and steroids play a huge factor. They bulk up to get huge and then cut to lose their body fat. You need to understand that its
IMPOSSIBLE to gain muscle without gaining fat and
IMPOSSIBLE to lose fat without losing muscle
To get huge you dont want to do cardio. While in a bulking cycle your goal is to put on as much weight as possible. To do this you need to be eating 5-10 small meals a day. Training each muscle group at most twice a week and getting lots of rest.
If your workout schedule does not include lower body: you will not get huge, if your schedule looks like monday: biceps/chest wednesday: biceps/chest friday: biceps/chest : you will not get huge
You need to be smart about lifting to see results. You need to make sure you focus on the the three major lifts: squats, deadlifts, bench, and work all your muscles, and not just the ones you can see in the mirror.
When you are done bulking up (you can decide on the time period, but usually you want to spend at least a few months doing so or bulking till you reach your desired weight), at that point would start your cutting cycle and begin doing cardio after your workout. You will lose muscle and fat during this period and shrink in size. However you will start to look more lean, ripped, cut whatever you want to call it.
I think asking on a body building forum would give much better responses then asking on a footbag forum. You do not need to explain footbag just state that you want to know about the timing of cardio when it comes to lifting.
There is soo much more to write but I am unsure of your goals and how knowledgable you are when it comes to bodybuilding so I will simply say read, train properly, and good luck.

after posting this a topic a couple months ago i didnt really start lifting yet. but as of lately i am. My goals are to get bigger and get good at footbag at the same time, both equally.

See this is my dillemma, i am fairly small, about 5'7 120 lbs. I want to get as big as i can before I go to Aruba in 3 months ( i figure setting a date is the best way to stay motivated) , but i want to continually get better at footbag, because i like them equally.

My friends that all play footbag have basically the same plan as I do. We all want to go to the gym everyday after school, shred and then lift, or vice versa. The only place to shred is on a half court basketball court. It will most likely be easier to play before the workout because the gym doesnt start getting crowded until like 5, meaning that if we shred after the workout people might be playing bball already.

Would it be better if we just do a light shred before and after the workout? For example should we play for like a half hour maybe less or until i break a good sweat, and then go work out? Or do the same thing but after the workout? It will honestly be easier before the workout, but we most likely will before and after, because footbag is an addiction :P
