Question for those of you who've used both Lavers and G6

Post by Sergey »

Which ones do you like better and why?

Sorry if this topic has already been brought up, but I didn't find one.

EDIT: That was supposed to be Lavers or G-Units.

G-units feel wider on the foot, so you can play longer in them without them hurting you.

G-Units have better grip on the bottom; I find I don't slip in them, unlike lavers.

G-Units have a curved instep, which makes clipper stalls much more consistent and easier to execute.

Ken, was there anything you liked better about using lavers?

It sounds like G-Units may be my next shoe . . . too bad I have a new pair of lavers just waiting for me.

So Ken, you agree G-Units impact your legs(knees) less than lavers?

There's also a number of people who switched back to lavers, it'd be interesting to hear what they have to say as well.

My first "real" freestyle shoe was g-unit. I was amazed. I thought that the reebok was the best shoe out there for footbag, but then I bought Lavers...the feeling is different...in my opinion playing with lavers is cleaner beacause the inside is smooth, they dont have edge like the G's when you remove the inside. Playing with medium size bag fot G's is ok, but playing with mini (Footfighter ot what ever) could be quite frustrating. Its rolling in the air and its not alawys set straight up..
So get Lavers, remove the canvas from the inside and feel the joy. :D

I wore Lavers for about a year and a half when I just recently decided to try out a pair of G-Units. The first day or two after I started kicking with the G-Units were a little frustrating, but after that, I have to say that I like the G-Units much better than the Lavers! They provide better support and feel much more comfortable than Lavers! I also agree with Ken that I don't slip around as much anymore because the grip is better.

I don't know about others, but for me, clipper sets have become much more easier and controllable. I've played with a big, floppy Sandmaster, an Abshire, a Raye bag, and a Footfighter and I don't have any troubles with clipper sets. I even like the toe area better; somehow, my pixie sets have also improved!

All in all, I'd say give the G-Units a try. If you don't like them, you can always sell them to someone who wants them. Since you're not sure whether you'd like them or not, I suggest you use eBay. That's where I got mine from and with shipping and handling, the price came out to be $46.00. That is a lot cheaper than some of the prices I've seen on online stores, plus they were cheaper than Lavers!

Exactly my thoughts!
You have to get used to them at first, especially the toe, but that doesn't take long. After my first session in the g6 I never switched back to lavers. That's about one year ago.

EDIT: I also like the surface for the inside better as it is thinner and less slippery as on mesh lavers .

I guess I'm part of the minority...

I kinda like lavers better than units. But then, maybe my modding job could've been better?

units
-better traction
-more support
-larger areas

mesh lavers
-a feeling like there is less attached to your foot
-If and when other footbaggers see you wearing these, they know you play.

Clippers
-I prefer the laver insides, and I believe one reason why, is because my crank isn't as amazing as it could be. so the curve in the laver actualy creates an area that is flat, even though my foot is not

toes
-pretty much the same, exceptI find my uptime sets to be more difficult with units, and I miss rakes more often, and my pendulous isn't as nice either, although my steppulous is a little better.

G-units are stiff and bulky. I like lavers because after I remove the canvas, they feel like a sock.

Word. I tried playing with Dat's G-Units these past few days, and I couldn't really get into how they felt. My Lavers feel like natural extensions of my feet whereas that was definitely not the case with the G-Units. Plus, I've never had support issues with the Lavers so while the G-Units do offer some more support, that isn't a real selling point for me.

I guess since I've been pretty outspoken about how I feel about units I should update my feelings with some new info gained from playing in them more.

Overall I like lavers better then g-units, but as of recent it isn't as far of a seperation as it was.

The first few sessions with units sucked for me, and that pretty much turned me off. But recently I played on two slippery floors and it was either a) slip or b) play in units. I think the sole of the unit is hands down the best part for me. I played without any slipping, which is huge. But when its nice carpet, id rather play in lavers. This is for a few reasons. The units feel a little bit more bulky and thick then my lavers. I think the part about lavers being an extention of your body is really key. They feel super streamlined and just more aerodynamic. I can furious for days in lavers, but not that well in units.

On top of all that, lavers beat gunits in my book for a reason that probably is the opposite of most people's. I feel like the instep on the units makes things a little bit too easy, and you dont really have to crank at all, it just fits there. I know if i wanted a challenge i could play in socks and use a brick, but at the same time it just seems that "pocket" units have is a little too much. The other problem is with the toe box. The walls are way to far back to make any difference at all, so of course people have better pixies with them, because you wont snag. I dont know why anyone would cut the walls off of units, becuase for me they dont obstruct at all. I guess I like having a nice tight toe box and snagging if im rolling my pixies off.

The last reason why i pick lavers over units is becuase units will eventually become a climacool, and youll have to search online to buy them. Id rather know that whatever shoe i play in will be easily avaiable (lavers). Even now you cant get units online (non-ebay) for less then 50 or so. idk why but I've never really been an ebay fan.

So my current state is this. If the floor is fine, ill play in lavers. If the floor is slippery, units all the way. I think i will always take both pairs of shoes to tournaments. the gunits are really good shoes, i just guess since i was raised on lavers i dont find a reason to switch. perhaps when my lavers die ill give the units another chance, and really skool in them, but for now lavers are fine.

however, an interesting poitn that contrasts all of this is that ive been told i have better style in units, and i play better. so go figure.

hope this helped,

i used to play in gs for about 7 months - i switched back to lavers last fall though - basically i'd say that gunits are the "better" shoe for freestyle, meaning they make stuff easier. the sole is soooooooo much better than any other footbag shoe i tried before. the clipper is quite a difference. after switching back to lavers i had to put a clipper rail on my lavers... which i think is a good way to compensate the disadvantage. the problem i had with the gs, is that i didn't like my style before, and it was getting worse, wearing gs.

similar to most other shoes than lavers, i have yet to see somebody who's style has improved when playing in climas, milleniums or gunits. some still have good style (eg. chad) but overall, i'd say it won't get any better using those shoes. the shoe compensates for sloppy style, bad posture, harsh impacts etc.

i hope i can improve my style when playing in lavers. i definetely noticed that in gs it was getting even worse. i do want a shoemaker to put a better sole on them as soon as they are worn down enough.

but it definetely is easier to hit harder combos and longer runs with g units.

try em out - make your own decision.

edit: i forgot, gs are bulkier so they have a bigger momentum - it takes more energy for quick dexes... which you barely notice after a couple sessions.
also IMO they really look increadibly shitty whereas lavers are really beautiful shoes.

The only serious injury I have ever sustained was during my G-Unit phase. That should say something about how much "more supportive and better for you" they are ;) In Lavers I've always been fine, except for occasional shin splints.

I would say the only useful redeeming quality of the G-Units are their grippier sole. Other than that, I find them to be incredibly stiff, bulky, and pretty ugly.

I think the part about lavers being an exten[s]ion of your body is really key. They feel super streamlined and just more aerodynamic.

I'm getting a pair of units in the mail soon, and I was gonna try them out for a while. From those of you that have tried both, is it hard to switch back and forth? If you were to use g-units for a week, would you have trouble getting used to lavers again (or vice versa)?

Wow, I completely feel the opposite! Having entirely black shred shoes is such a joy for me, after 8 years of white tennis shoes. Now, I finally feel like I have cool footbag shoes.

Oh, and to add to David's comment that the Gs make clippers too easy, I talked to Honza a while back, and he felt the same.

As for the bulkiness, it took me a session to adjust, but now they don't feel weird at all to me, they don't feel bulky.

Actually, if you ask me, I think my Gs are pretty slender, much more than my Lavers really. Must be because I modded them like crazy to make them lighter on my feet (toe, insides, outsides, tongue). I totally agree on better traction, having a bit of a heel support, and a much more curvier sole for better clippers. It's a bit hard for me to adjust back to Lavers, as I seem to keep getting a bad ankle crank on them to support good clippers. All in all, I'm pretty comfortable with the Goonitz. Must be because they're black shred shoes like Ken stated, and that my Red Lavers has all sorts of grime building up because of time and weather. :)

The only problems I have with G-units is partially for the toe and heel support they have. In a sense I felt that the toe area was extremely big after doing a toe and lacing mod - and it didn't help when I cut a layer off on the tongue. Plus, with lacing the walls up the Gs didn't feel very secure whatsoever and made it uncomfortable for me to play with. In the end it felt that cutting off the first eyelets made for a better foundation for my game, and I don't mind having no walls anyway (I'll be getting a second pair of Gs strictly to leave the walls intact, so my opinion can change). As for the heel, I think the support there is a bit too high - much more than what Lavers and maybe the Le Coqs have on their shoe. It makes pointing your toes a bit annoying in cases like whirls, stepping sets, ripwalks, heel delays, etc. It's also a bit abrasive on my skin as I usually wear ankle socks to freestyle in. Maybe I'll look into Jordan Moir's shred shoes and see again on how he mods his Gs in terms of the heels. :P It's pretty wicked.

I guess I should play in my Lavers more, but I'm still a huge fan of the G-units. Goonitz 4 Life.

true, having all black shoes is cool. but now i also have all black lavers, and anyways, with a good marker you can make em any color you want em to be. most importantly i like the mesh waaaay more than that shiny plastic (synthetic leather). i find the shape of the shoe to be more tasteful. whatever.
