Hey this isn't an official policy message or something. I just wanted to give a couple of personal thoughts:
Trolls are people looking for fights - if you think somebody is saying something just to start a fight and you responding to them with disagreement that is exactly what they're looking for.
I find it amazing how worked up people get in argueing with people I percieve as clearly trolls. While sometimes it can be fun to argue about things for the sake of argueing - it seems clear to me that many people do not find it fun and get seriously worked up with these arguements. I tend to think this makes you look a little foolish.
Perhaps a much better policy would be to ignore the people you perceive to be trolls. If they get no response to their trolling they're probably much more likely to stop than if they get arguements - which is presumably what they're looking for.
Anyway just something maybe people can keep in mind.

I met a troll once. He was hiding underneath a bridge, and threatened to eat me if I dared try to cross. Fortunately, I had my big male goat in my back pocket who proceeded to punt him into the river.
Uhh. Trolls don't look for arguments. Arguments are very nice. A troll's purpose is to incite flamewars.
I've yet to see a flamewar on modified, since it is lacking in retarded 12 year-old AOLers who spam random leet and death threats(in-game).
So if there are any trolls at modified, they really really suck. Hmm. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't say that. We don't need them, but in any case, we haven't seen them.
yeah, not since a certain someone got his prescription renewed
I think a forum rank should be Troll, and players earn it when they've trolled too much, maybe for 2 weeks at a time or something... just so everyone knows not to take them seriously...

that was just matt saying that he wants his rank changed to "troll"
People are ego driven and take things personally online.
I have been analyzing the growth of arguments for sometime now, it kinda goes like this:
1. Someone brings up a debatable topic
2. Debating Begins
3. Someone's view seems to be totally ridiculous to someone else.
4. Someone's intelligence gets insulted, turning a post into a personal attack.
5. As one ’s intelligence is insulted, flaming begins by one trying to act more intelligent than the other for ego drive.
6. The debate now test who is more "intelligent". Because of this, people pick apart meaningless errors in post to act smarter than the other.
7. Thread ends nowhere near what was originally presented.
yeah, trolls suck especially on forums with like 50-70 percent trolls.
But you do need a troll know and than just to keep things from getting boring.
If that ever happens....Waldo Faldo could always be summoned...
