Hmmm, question about the Basics.

Post by Switch Kicker »

Ok. I have my basics down, EASY on my strong side. They are SOMEWHAT sketchy on my flip. But I can still do them just fine, like... if I had to put it on a scale of completion, completion meaning having it down to a fine degree, I'd have to say it's at 90%.

For me, in my opinion, that's good enough. I think I should start doing more complicated, higher add tricks... But, Josh Anderson (For those of you who know him.) keeps telling me, "You need to keep working on your basics, no don't be trying that complicated stuff, get your basics down." ...I have my basics down... Just because I missed a flipside pick up after doing a sidewalk doesn't mean I dont have it down, it just means... I missed it, big freakin deal right?

He's always complementing me though... Like when I do a Zoid set symposium illusion... He's always like, "Dude, you make that shit look really fucking good... You should pull that during the shred today..." (We WERE going to go visit Josh Rose and shred... but we couldn't make it...) And I can pull some decent shit, and make it look really good, and he knows it, he keeps telling me, that I make it all look good and smooth... Yet, if I screw up... he's like, work on your basics man...

Do I REALLY need to work on my basics on my flipside? I mean, they mess me up more than I'd really like them too... But I don't think I need to specifically work on my flipside basics do I? Cause... First off, I dont really want to, I prefer doing it the hard way... Trying bigger and bigger add tricks with more screwing up than success... I don't know... Maybe he is just afraid I will surpass him? I really don't know why he keeps telling me to stick to the basics... Because I am DEFINANTLY catching up to him... I pulled a really nice Pendilous Torque, smooth, everything about it was perfect, in my living room, and he was like, OMG, and yea... He can't do that.. but he can do alot more than me... Atomic set butterfly.... (W/e that's called.) I can't pull atomic if my life depended on it...

Some guidance on this subject would be great. Thanks again.

Fred.

In my honest opinion, if you can do all the basic stalls easy enough, like you say you can, and you can do toe kicks inside kicks and outside kicks fairly decent then I think that you are fine to carry on as you are.

When you drop the bag, it isn't always a case of your basics not being good, but its hard to use what you know to put it in that trick.

If you drop a legover, perhaps its not your toe stalls that are lacking, but the timing of the trick, so in that case the basics aren't whats letting you down.

Thanks, I figured... And I only fuck up with basic stuff 1/10 times... That's not that bad... I don't think anyways. Makes it a bit harder to get a ncie run... But if I'm pumped I can get around 20-25 contacts in a decent run.

Thanks again.

I can only do 3, sometimes 4 add tricks. It's not really about learning... Because, you know HOW to do stepping ducking swivel... It's just, you havn't trained your body and mind to cooperate with what you want to do yet. It's just your body and mind are trained to make it so that you can step set it, high, then duck it, then jump, throw your right leg over and then catch it in an osis... But you know HOW to do it. Because I just told you. =D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO no no no no nooooooooooooo!!!!!!

DO NOT EVER think that you can just jump into doing the hard shit without knowing the basics!!!!!

All the hard tricks are MADE OF THE BASICS!!! you HAVE to be able to do all the basic motions to be able to do the harder tricks that USE them!

Don't counter with 'oh but I can hit a blurry whirl, that means I don't have to drill whirl' because that is the wroooooong thinking!!!!

Drill your basics on BOTH SIDES until you can go tiltless for like.. 20 contacts no problem THEN move onto the harder shit!!

Yeah. You should work on your basics no matter what. I've been playing 6 months now and I don't know very many 3-add tricks. I'm trying to focus on learning as many of the basic tricks as I can. I mean, mirage, illusion, and pickup aren't the only ones out there.

If you can't string mirage>sameside mirage>rpt for a whole bunch of contacts, then you should skool your basics, I think. Try it.

skipping steps makes you more likely to hurt yourself (like me) and could very well have a propensity for making you one-sided (like me). Worth those basics, and get a strong, smooth foundation of tiltless. Trust me, you'll be better for it. no green eggs and ham yet ;)
