What is footbag to you?

Post by Nogbad »

This may seem a lot like the culture footbag thread, but it's something I've meant to ask. My girlfriend does not play footbag. She's not really into it, but she does not discourage my playing. She has however, asked me what it was about it that has me so hooked. That got me to thinking, what is footbag to me?

I guess, my own answer to this question is simply it filled a void in my life. I used to be a very avid computer game player. I played a game called Asheron's Call, an MMORPG for 6 years. As the saying goes, good things must come to an end, and the game lost its appeal to me a couple months back. Around this same time, footbag was revealed to me. Upon looking for a durable hackeysack (we found the chainmail footbags) a friend of mine and myself came across flipsider, then, footbag.org then finally modified and upon watching the videos and reading what people talked about here, I was hooked, this would be my new obsession.

It's something amazing and I'm both thrilled and awed at how something so (conceptually) simple as footbag could become such a part of my life. I'm constantly thinking about footbag, and I'm constantly wondering how to improve aspects of it. Thus is why I'm rather quick to purchase bags from individuals. I tend to play them, examine filler, examine stitching and material and tell the stitcher what I think. And should they choose, I'll also post my feelings publicly. I actually love this as much or in some cases more than the playing of footbag.

When I do play however, it's a real feeling of peace or Zen. It's like the only thing that matters at that moment is me and the bag and doing what I'm trying to do. I may only be tiltless or so, but I just feel so at peace when I'm doing it.

Footbag is a whole new field of friends. People I have never met face to face I feel are my friends. There are those I speak to on msn or AIM outside of modified and the common ground is footbag, which breaks the ice very simply.

Overall, and at its root, footbag is just a part of my life I have no doubt will stay with me for a very, very long time, if not my lifetime.

What is it to you?

I have skated obsessively everyday for the last three years. But I was at a point where I wasn't happy with my skating and all my friends were like you suck(in a joking way but it still bothered me) and it was becoming less and less enjoyable. All it was was me constantly stressing to get as good as my friends and it was no fun anymore. Plus it had cost me a buttload of money over the years.

Then about a month ago I was introduced to footbag. I haven't touched my board since and have no need to do it anymore. Skateboarding was so commrcialized and all anybody wanted was to get sponsored. Footbag is completely different. It doesn't cost a lot of money. It doesn't ruin your clothes. Nobody hassles you if your not good. There's basically no commercialism. And I can do it basically whenever and wherever I want.

To me footbag is so much better. I thought skateboarding was such a creative sport but then I look at footbag and its like that x100. Footbag is just a part of my life now. I'm learning faster than I ever did skating. My parents don't mind it like they did skating. For some reason now I eat healthier just so I can get better at footbag. I stretch daily. I'm doing noticingly better at school. It's helped me so much already. I could keep talking forever but I know what its like trying to read two long posts in a row.

Footbag, to me is a creative outlet. I like to think that I'll try just about anything once, and so I know a thing or two about most sports, hobbies, what have you. Footbag is by far the most challenging on an overall level. It's more difficult than anything else and it's so innovative. If I want to completely ignore thinking and beat myself up, I'll go for a run. If I don't even feel like moving and just want to get my art on, I'll pick up my guitar. But if you combine creativity with athleticism, innovation with physical perseverance, you get footbag. And that's what I love about it. If you push yourself in footbag, you're pushing your own boundaries mentally and physically.

A while back when I was hurt, I went through some dark times. I realized that my motivation for footbag was the same as my motivation for life, school, and anything else. Morale was low, grades dropped, that whole shpeal. Then I realized, the best thing about footbag is the fact that I get to go to some of the coolest places and meet the coolest people in the world. That's the second thing footbag is to me (by no means second in importance). Whether or not I'm hurt, well, pushing limits, or going through the motions footbag will always be the people I've met and continue to keep in touch with around the world.

It's fun, easy to get into, doesn't require a bunch of expensive equipment, you can do it anywhere, you can play with yourself or a friend, you can always practice as long as you have a bag, and it isn't commercial. If it was, I'd be greatly discouraged.

Footbag is a lifestyle. To me footbag is more important than anything else in the world. No matter how bad things are going in school, in relationships, or financially, I know I will wake up everyday happy if I can play footbag.

To me, it's what I've been looking for all my life.

No, really...if I add Footbag to my girlfriend, I feel complete.

And the feeling when you show off to innocent bystanders...muahahaha

Footbag is fucking sweet. :D

It's the best sport because you can play alone, or with friends, and there's no pressure.

I had circle kicked off and on for a few years, but never got into it that much. Then I saw Vasek in person, and my head exploded. Since then I started playing like a maniac and it's been the best 7 months of my life.

Footbag is whole my life.

when i feel angry, mad or sad because of some things i know that i can go to shred and relax. for me, footbag is the best way to relax. meetings with new shreders are also great. i love travel and meeting new people, so footbag is the best way which can do it. when i haven't played yet, i haven't knew nothing about footbag. i haven't knew that something like this exist. i haven't knew footbag is awesome and it really changed my life.
