miller, yes, you can if you want, they're just like mesh lavers in that respect. I have 2 pairs of these, they are my most cushy, comfortable set of lavers. They work well for freestyle with standard modification.
I'm just so afraid of modding off the canvas underneath and leaving just the twill, because the fabric is much more delicate than regular mesh. However, my first pair has the twill modded off with the canvas left, and it was really stiff for the first couple of months I shredded in them.
I have one in reserve, but I doubt I'll be modding them. Strictly for walking.

They do fine modded. A player in our club had them and they never tore or had holes. Just don't poke any sharp objects into the twill and it should be fine, just like everything else.
