The main reason I removed the edit button a while back was because people weren't owning up to their words. People would say something in the Discussion thread, feel stupid or wrong about it and then go back and edit out their post. Bascially, some very prominent people in that section weren't being very adult in the most adult section on the forum.
How do you feel about it?

Yeah a legitmate concern. I personally like the idea of assuming (incorrectly) that everybody are mature and adult and trying to deal with those who aren't - rather than the more cynical view that nobody is responsible enough to have the ability to edit their own posts. I know that latter is way less work but I also think it's unfair to basically punish the mature people on the forum who can deal with being wrong about things. I don't think there are any topics in the discussion forum that are so important that somebody significantly editing their post will really matter - it's just frustrating for the people in the topic but I don't think what "modified" decides about the war in Iraq is really that significant in the scheme of things.

No, because it doesn't effect mods anyway
Lol but seriously, I think there isn't a real need for the edit button, plenty of forums I have been on have it disabled on the whole board, and though it can be annoying at times, those times are normally the times I want to take back something stupid I said without anyone finding out
