Is Steve Martin Funny
Do you find Steve Martin funny? I never find him funny. Also everytime I see his movies reviewed the reviewer says something like "I'm a big fan of Steve Martin and he's a really funny guy usually but this movie isn't funny at all etc." Has he ever actually been in a funny movie or is this an elaborate conspriacy to make me spend money going to movies that aren't funny? I've also heard him to stand up and thought that wasn't funny either.

I used to like him, but I don't have the drive these days to make sense of his comedy. I did like "The Invisible Man" for the cool special effects.

Steve Martin and John Candy are sharing a bed together...
SM: Where's your hand?
JC: Between two pillows.
SM:... those aren't pillows!
JC: <screaming>

ME: laughing almost to the point of urinating on myself

One of my mates asked me this exact question not long ago - he hadn't seen L.A. Story, which is my favorite Steve Martin film, and a very good film in general - not a comedy of the same ilk as many of his other films, perhaps thats why i like it more? I also like some of the other stuff already mentioned, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a classic (my next favorite Steve martin movie), and I like The Three Amigos, and Planes, Trains... Although its difficult to attribute these films entirely to Steve Martin who is just one cog in their humour machines, unlike L.A. Story which I think he wrote. I didn't really like Bowfinger or Roxanne - though its tough to like Roxanne if you've seen the original. I think in some of his less funny films, he playes the same type of character - Parenthood was its beginning (which is O.K. but then it later becomes The Father of the Bride, Cheeper by the Dozen, Bringing Down The House character) and lacks a good foil and/or intersting plot. I watched Shopgirl recently, he adapted it from one of his novella's, its not really a comedy per se, I thought it was pretty good, it's closer to L.A.Story than any of his other films though less funny (its not supposed to be).
Some of his standup is really funny, sometimes not. I haven't read any of his novels and have heard mixed reports.

Hahhahaa THE JERK!! One the best movies ever. Planes Trains and Autos rocked the house too...So funny that John Candy sold shower curtain rings lol. Roxanne was good, but I can't remember it at all. His SNL stuff was pretty sweet too. Oh yeah, and Three Amigos. Man I have to watch that again. Good times.

Not sure what you're talking about there.
I also remember liking The Man With Two Brains, full of bad puns and sight gags though nowhere near the level of the marx brothers, chaplin or keeton - sort of old school pie in the face funny.
Haven't seen Dead Men Wear Plaid, might watch it at work on Sunday.
