Naming Videos [no video]

Post by HG »

I guess i'm making this topic because i have so many footbag videos, and they are all named stuff like :

May shred
March 15 shred
AnyMonthshred

It would be great if everyone would name videos like this

YourNameYearMonthDay

So like....

HenryGriese060527

so when i go to watch videos i know what they are.

This would help everyone out... But it really only applies to like.. solo session videos. So i guess do it if you feel like it, but i got the idea from Chan Man

Why don't you just rename the video once you downloaded it?

I'm actually more a fan of the creative titles, but I think Alex's suggestion would be the best of both. Perhaps you could have something like OriginalPostersTitle - NameYearMonthDay.

On the videos I downloaded, I just put something like Jorden Moir - Cosmic Session or whatever.

Bingo.

Yes henry in a perfect world people would name thier videos:
event/person-date-quality (eg AustralianNationals-2006-1500kbps.wmv)

But heaps of people don't and never will, it's best just to rename videos as you download them, then when your collection gets to 17GB you can still find what you wana watch. The folders in my video collection I tend to use the most are #BestFootbagVideos and #Vasek, I have a folder for all the top players, but naming files well is always the best idea because it helps HEAPS when you want to use a computer search function.

Something interesting I found out recently is that the new Windows coming out soon (Vista) is entirely based around 'virtual folders' which are not real folders but when you open them they display all the files from your PC with certain attributes, ofcourse for this to work users will need to use appropriate file names, so get used to renaming stuff ;)

The problem with renaming your videos is that people often reference videos by their filenames. Ex: "Hey man, go check out fatstring001 in video.vid that was released like x months ago! That was the hotness." I personally think the most useful naming convention would just be a consistent name for people who release videos (staying with, say, Regamey, and not flipping between kreg, kevin, regamey, kregamey, etc) and pairing that with a somewhat descriptive title. I have sooo many videos named something like "januaryshred" or "summershred" or "outdoor session." If it just had a name appended it would simplify matters amazingly.

Also, telling people to rename their videos once they download them is a poor argument. People don't need to create extra work for people by being lazy and naming their video something that doesn't help with keeping directories organized.

I never rename videos for the reason Sam mentioned.
I renamed back when I saved my first videos from dallasfootbag.org (before the videos were hosted on footbag.org), and when there weren't many videos on the internet. That was silly of me.
I organize with folders, usually by country, but I have an "AWESOME" folder for videos like anything Vasek, Jorden, and videos like Finnish vids with Aleski, or the Australian Champs video. Back when Sam made lots of videos I had an Oops folder...stuff like that. I works pretty well, and then on the discs I list the folders and highlights of what's in them. I also have a photo folder and a misc folder, and sometimes a "newbs" folder.
