How popular is 4 square?

CIC plays it ALOT, what about other people/clubs?
Its good to warm up, and its more fun than freestyle.

(theres a reason why I didnt post in the 4square forum)

4-Square is just a different kind of fun than freestyle is. For me they're both fun for really different reasons.

It's my favorite hackysack activity if I'm in the right mood.

I laugh more during 4 Square than other types of footbag playing.

no, I like freestyle, its what makes me take footbag things seriously, but like lon said, you laugh more in 4 square. plus, you might not be in condition to freestyle sometimes, soreness....or whatever, but i'm ALWAYS rady for 4 square. extraplus, i think its better for noobs to get into footbag, you dont have to practice so much just to be competent

say..you cant get new people to play cause all you guys do is shred - it can get boring for noobs.

I don't really like foursquare. My club never plays it and when I go to tournaments I never play it.

I feel all alone in my dislike of foursquare, it's nice to have some company.

Don't get me wrong, I like it a little.. I just don't see it as something I'd rather do with footbaggers other than footbag.

I think it depends on who you play with that makes it fun. I dont really enjoy as much if I'm not playing with either Tom, Zeke or Reile. Trick shots, epic rounds, saves, banter, laughter....thats what I like about it.

I've played it once. And that was on the second day of the Steel City Shred Off. It's a good game to get you warmed up. It's a fun game, but after 5 or 6 rounds I was definitely ready to shred again.

I've only played it a few times, it's alright. Doesn't hold anything against freestyle though. And it's not like I can have a killer game of four square here on my lonesome

I don't get how people think it's good warmup.

You don't have to go giving it false attributes to make it seem like a viable activity, it's perfectly okay for the game to be fun on it's own without claiming that it will get your tough stains out or help you meet that special someone.

I like freestyle best

Four-square is great because it's fun, a great social tool, and even noobs can play it.

I had a party this weekend and when we went outside for a bunch of people to leave, my girlfriend and two others waited for them to get their cars so we could say goodbye to them [and see this cool pepsi + mentos trick?]. Well, they were momentarily bored and the concrete was layed perfectly for a 4-square court, so... yup!

We played some 4-square with modified rules so that my girlfriend won

I meet new people and cute girls every day at college when I invite them to play foursquare with me. 4-square is a better social lubricant than circle kicking

So its not exactly a boring traditional warm up....I and everyone I play with break a sweat/incease heart rate, stretch out legs a bit, and feel good to shred after 2 or 3 rounds, its not a false attribute. I mean, I play primarily cause its fun, but i choose to play it before shred usually because it warms me up, I guess it depends on how you play.

4 square can get intense, for people who like it and get creative with it. shred-only guys cant seem to hang, i see them get bored cause they cant score/dont know how to do trick shots, saves or place the bag in corners.

I also dislike 4-square. It just doesn't hold my interest at all. It's fun watching eli and goldberg going 1v1, but other than that, no.

Oh and I like how you don't have a poll option for non-players

The reason I don't enjoy four square is because I feel it brings our sport down. When I stopped playing hacky sack it was for a reason: I found something more fun and much cooler to play. Four square is basically hacky sack with rules. Why would we want to bring it tournaments when we're presenting ourselves to the world? Weren't we trying to get away from that image?

Recently I have found 4 square to be a very useful and effective recruiting tool.

When people see a shred circle of guiltless players (even tiltless), they can be really intimidated. It can be hard for people to just step in and say "teach me." But with 4square, all you need to be able to do is kick the bag a couple times. It's an easier (and fun) introduction into the world of freestyle. When I am shredding and see somebody watching, if I say: "do you want me to teach you some tricks?" they often say no, I think because they think:

a. They couldn't possibly learn. And/or
b. They are wasting my time.

If instead they see a bunch of people laughing and playing foursquare, I can ask them: "hey, do you want to try out this fun and easy-to-play game?" Which generally gets much more positive responses.

Getting people into foursquare makes them feel comfortable around these new weird guys who are good at hack. It creates camaraderie, it's bonding that crosses over skill levels. Once friendships, or the beginnings of friendships are forged through 4square, it becomes much easier to teach people to shred. 4 square has the advantage of freestyle that it isn't nearly as frustrating to learn, and has a faster payoff.

With the club at Cornell, we have gotten lots of people interested in footbag through foursquare. Once we get them hooked, then we start teaching them tricks, modding their shoes, etc.

Oh, and I personally think that foursquare actually IS a great warmdown after a session.

That is such an elitist attitude. Freestyle might be the most popular style of footbag, but your acting as if it's a higher form, which all other forms degrade from. That sounds very Blough-esque (or Bloughanese as he would call it). I go to tournaments to have fun, and that's how I try to present myself: having fun. If you don't have fun playing 4square that's fine, but don't act like it's doing a disservice to the greater good of footbag.

Agreed. That's like baseball players saying playing catch in the park is degrading to their sport.

And freestyle is also just hacky sack but more complicated.
