Would you go to this tournament?
Would you go to this tournament?
Would you go to a shred tournament if the only competition was the circle shred competition? No routines, shred 30, Rippin' Run, Sick 3 or Big 1.
I'm talking about a tournament that just highlighted the best qualities of actual Freestyle Shred.

I would go to a tournie with only circle contest.
All the old formats are stale.
In fact, events that DON'T have circle appeal to me much less now. Partially for lacking the circle event and partially because it just says to me that the organisers are out of date.
Circle is fresh.
Circle is the future.

i think that comps that would only have circle contest would be kinda lame, i think tournaments that uses all the different types of comps are the most entertaining (in my book)
but i not ruling out not going to an event such as this, but it would totally depend on where i lived and how far away the tournament was....i wouldnt fly to europe for one circle contest

I would go as long as I knew that even if I didnt advance to the _____ round, that I would havce a consolation bracket or something. I like to know what place I finish as compared to the rest of the players. So, if I did not advance in the first round, I'd want a consolation bracket of other non-advancing players to battle against. That way at least Id feel like I got my money's worth or something to that effect.

there should only ever be ONE level to compete at. Chris Miller and I have debated about this. ...hah, sorry to attack your idea (I'm truly not targeting you at all)... I just don't think there's any point in competing Novice/Intermediate. (I regret competing Novice in the online sick events that Nic holds.) Even if you come in first, what's the point in saying "I'm the best intermediate player"? If everyone competes Open, then you can have a much more accurate assesment of your skill level at the tournament.
I'm sorry for being so off topic
I've never competed in a circle competition, but from the looks of it I think that I would like it. I can't wait to try it at Kickass!!
People go to jams though, and there aren't ANY competitions there... so if there's only a circle comp, that's still better than having no comp; &people go to events with no comps anyway!! ...Once I've competed in a circle comp, then I'll have a more definate stance in this discussion.

If you're a noob like me that wants to do a circle competition, but the only one is with a bunch of pros that will royally rape you, you have no chance of winning, and therefore is no point in trying in the comp in the first place. it should be done by skill level so everyone is able to compete fairly.RawSko wrote:NO!Spontaneous Spaz wrote:and if a circle competition, then also a novice circle comp![]()

So far it's just a passing thought. I think Sick 3 and Big 1 have had their day and not many people really WANT to compete in them. 4 or 5 people in those events doesn't seem worth it to me personally. No one thinks they have anything big enough and the reality is that most of it has been seen or done before.sampotter wrote:Take a wild guess based on the original poster.
Shred 30 simply takes too long to score and it always has. Crowds have a hard time really getting into it because their is no instantaneous idea of who won.
Rippin' run is still cool, but kind of made obsolete by the Shred Circle Comp.
No one liked the idea of incorporating routines last year.
I don't see any good reason not to have a separate intermediate level comp and a non-advancing bracket would be awesome.

If I went to a comp that only had open circle, and not open and intermediate, I probably wouldn't compete. Ben, you said that way you can truly tell how good you are, but I found when I tried circle comp in montreal, I got totally smoked in my circle with Ianek and some other dude who was way better than me. It's not that it's any less fun, but it definitely doesn't give you a good idea of how you compare to other people when you get smoked out of the first round. I mean, all it showed me was that I was the least skilled in the competition. I think if you get an intermediate competition, at least you can see in a group of peers where you're at.
I mean, I think having everybody compete open would be like...umm...lets say you have a AA rep baseball team with a bunch of 18 year olds or something. Skilled baseball players in their own regard. Okay, let's say that their final championship thing, they had to play and win against the Yankees. Clearly, they get smoked from when the game starts, to the end. Did they get an idea of how good they were? No not really...they got smoked. Whereas if they played with a team of EQUAL skill, they would've gotten a better idea of how good they were...
Anyway, that's my opinion.

i think it would be fun to be in a circle comp with pros....raped or not your still in a circle with "the best" which to me is awesome on its own, as for getting raped, i dont care either way as long as i was able to atleast joinSpontaneous Spaz wrote:If you're a noob like me that wants to do a circle competition, but the only one is with a bunch of pros that will royally rape you, you have no chance of winning, and therefore is no point in trying in the comp in the first place. it should be done by skill level so everyone is able to compete fairly.RawSko wrote:NO!Spontaneous Spaz wrote:and if a circle competition, then also a novice circle comp![]()

Sorry Rawsko, you lucked out with that idea. Having one level of competition will intimidate a lot of intermediate players, why would they bother competing when they're just going to get smashed? Intermediate competitions are run around the world for a reason.
edit: oh and I would go to that competition if it was close by. I try to get to pretty much any jam/competition in Australia. Overseas I would like to travel Europe sometime and do a bunch of competitions so then it would rely on schedule, and probably who else was going to it. I still like the other competition formats, but I guess we'll see whether that changes or not

Brad, I think your question is, "would the absence of these other events keep you from coming?"
The answer to that question, for me, is no.
I've seen circle from worlds, and I've competed in one at US Open, and I LOVED it. I'm usually not into competition, but I think that circle is the real deal. Head to head shred action... It's the best to watch, and INCREDIBLY fun to take part in, I got SO charged up! way more than I've ever been in competition before. Circle is the best event, and there's no adds unfairly making some moves and techniques more valuable than others.
It's more fun to take part in, and to see, than any other form of competition, in my opinion.

Aweseom reply Matt. I was hoping to get that kind of response from someone. You hit the nail right on the head with "there's no adds unfairly making some moves and techniques more valuable than others." If you take a players style such as yours, Moshers, or Evan Lovely's, it's impossible for any of you to play in your true form in any of the other contests. Routines have become 2 minute shreds, 30 sec shred is too heavily dependent on adds and you guys all have difficult tricks that are difficult to add count. Sick Trick and Big 3 still work for you guys, but they are often diminished at most tournaments.
Another point on intermediates entering in Open competition. Most intermediates choke in Open comp or even Open circles. They want to play harder than they usually due because everyone in the circle is busting huge. They try things that they normally would practice outside of circles. I think the Circles are meant to bring back the natural essence of freestyle footbag while interjecting some friendly competition. Putting Intermediates with Pros in a contest totally goes against that.
