Classification before "ADD's"?

Simply as the title says, before the ADD system was used, how were tricks ranked? Has the ADD system always been the one and only way?

I know people on the boards are doing anyone a service when they answer any question, so thank you, but that link was utterly useless for me....

I tried searching for "ADD history" and "ADD" nothing came up, and then I looked for a "history" section, and nothing.

Honestly you bring a good question. I'm a pretty old-timer for the boards here and I have no idea what the answer to your question is. Maybe Ken or Splint or Outsider could shed some light on this (I don't now as I'm not sure how old the add system is).

I'm guessing that they just used long descriptions and "right foot in to out" this and "left foot clipper delay" that

Sorry. I think in the past a lot of tricks were described like this

"1. Jester - You hold the footbag in your left hand and you jump up (jump off your right foot). Then you bring your right foot behind your left leg as you drop the footbag and kick it. Once you have got that mastered you can start kicking it and do the Jester without your hand. LEFTY: the same as righty but just hold the footbag in your right hand and jump off of your left foot. "

There's a ton of those kind of trick descriptions @ http://www.footbag.com . Most of the descriptions are very wordy and somewhat ambiguous with no way to rate the difficulty.

I think adds were created in order to judge footbag in competitions, therefore, there really was no ranking system before adds. There was no need. People just hit tricks that they knew were harder than others.

the ranking sytem before adds was based on style and the judges interpretation of the best style combined with control(lack of drops).
Sounds just like the judging system after adds (the one we have used since 2002)

I don't think this is right. The story I remember is that KennyS and Rick Reese came up with ADDs in a car ride to/from a jam. Keep in mind that this would have happened well before the words uptime, downtime, set, component, etc were in use. Players at the time were just doing 'tricks' with various names and there was definitely no such thing as a trick's 'technical name'.

The motivation for the ADD discussion was that a symbolic breakdown of their tricks would allow accurate communication of new moves and concepts without actually playing together (throwing a vid up on youtube wasn't an option at the time). Also, a symbolic breakdown gives a simple method for coming up with new moves to try - just combine the elements in a way that you haven't before and give it a shot. My guess is that this was a major catalyst in the developement of sets as a concept and the distinction between up and down time. The new school of freestyle.

This is a total guess, and I think that this sort of thing could be a little too ambiguous to be documented, but my money is on Kenny with Big Apple or either Kenny or Reese with eiher ducking PS whirl or whirligig.
