I'd probably focus on other things first. But I guess I can't say that I wouldn't be interested in buying one eventually... :?

I saw a thing about this on the news the other day. I believe they said starting price was going to be about $500. Either way it looks awesome...I won't be able to afford one for a few...years, but I figure once I can afford it the price will have dropped a bit. (I'm sure by then, some sort of amazing new technology will have come out though and the iphone will be old news). :(

Its pretty and will sell well regardless of the crap contract you have to buy with it and the fact that only one us distributor will be selling it at first.

However, its first gen and that should be enough to make a lot of people think twice. Compare the first gen ipod with current ipods and you have to wonder what mistakes apple made with this phone that won't be realized until its been well tested in the market place. Also the lack of tactile keys is probably a mistake.

I say hold off and save your money. If you want a smart phone buy a blackberry. If you don't want a smart phone don't even bother looking at the iphone as to use many of its features you will need to pay for both a data and voice plan.

I fully agree with you on that one. You also have to charge this baby up daily. ..

But as you accurately pointed out: this is only the first generation. Give Apple a bit of time and user-feedback and they'll polish this phone up nicely no doubt.

They will probably do so in a year. I like it. It's hawt, it's a phone, it's a music player, it's touchy screeny ness is cool. I want. But I'm not paying that. Phones are always overpriced because no one buys them. That's what phone plans are for.

IMO this thing is way overhyped. I'm always suspcious of things that are being dubbed to be revolutionary before they are even released to the market. Sounds like Apple is just trying push thing based on the merits of the iPod before it's even been put out in the market. Don't believe the hype. When the thing comes out the marketplace will decide.

Also, I agree on not going out and grabbing the 1st generation of these, as there will probably be bugs and functionality issues. In addition, Apple will probably rapidly price skim and 6 months after initial release the price could come down as much as 30-40%.

Don't let the hype cloud your judgement.

I'd definitely get one .... just because it has everything I've wanted to get soo far since i've been looking into a PDA with a web browser and mass storage.

It looks like cingular will be the first company to get its hands on it .... meaning its a gsm phone which is pretty damn cool.

If it ever decides to come out for verizon ... in around 2 years ... i think i would get it with a new plan

People get all of this money and just go out spending it not saving a penny for later when they might need it.

I've been saying this for a while. there's eventually gonna be one device that's gonna include mp3 player, phone, good quality camera, pda functionality, etc.

I have pretty mixed feelings about the iPhone. I think it's an iPod with somekind of a phone integrated. So it looks good for listening music or watching videos, but I'd prefer my phone to have real buttons. Also it's lacking on the data connections as it doesn't support 3G, which is used all over europe. Maybe they'll release it with 3G in europe. And I think Apple is also focusing on the iPod features of the device. Apple itself has stated that they are not competing on the mobile phone market. If they reach their goal of 10 million iPhones sold in 2008, they will reach under a 1% market share on the mobile phone market.

Since the iPhone runs OSX (or something similar) it would be ideal for open source software developing, but unfortunately Apple has stated that they won't allow third party software at the moment. But they have said that OSX widgets would work on the phone. The current smart phones use Symbian, which I've heard is pretty complicated to use. I think customization is going to be a big thing on phones (or what ever the devices we will be carrying will be called) in the future.

But Apple sure knows how to get hype going! A very similar device was released a few years ago by a small finnish company, which didn't have the resources to advertise or hype it like Apple has. http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=547 It's very similar to the iPhone.

And also Nokia already has a phone with all the same features except the touch screen. Also many other phones with similar features for people with different needs. I haven't followed other manufactures, but I'm sure they have similar models also. http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html#product,n91_8gb

I myself just bought a new smart phone, so I'm not even concidering of buying one, but I'm interested on what will happen. I've got marketing as a secondary subject in university so I like to follow these things. Apple is always interesting to follow.

I think that Iphone is real crap- it is so much better to buy some pda like for example hp ipaq 6xxx because it has also gps and qwerty keyboard and it is a lot cheaper....
Anyway in few months everyone will have Iphone because of the advertising campaign and because it has the mighty "I" like Ipod (which is even bigger crap....(Ibook is cool though))

The iphone is hardly revolutionary. Tech like this has existed for years in Japan.
