Money money money money.....Monnnnnnnnay

Post by Rob »

Perhaps I'm the only one to notice. But we are trading peices of paper as though they had some sort of value. "It says 100 on it, that means you gotta give me alot of stuff." That statement sounds absolutley retarded
to me, probably to everyone, now noone may actually say that (although someone might...)but it's a statement that is true.

Precious metals like gold and silver were once traded for items because of
their beauty (mmm shiny metal!). They also had a use, gold and silver could bothbe melted down and turned it some kind of ornament of your liking. Paper money, is just flat paper, it's a crime to draw a cute little design on it.

Just wondering if anyone else finds the current method of exchanging money for objets is absurd. I'd like to give someone a bag of pretzels for a drink, I've already eaten a few, and now I'm quit thirsty. Too bad I can't :-D.

That sounds like you were stoned on something while writing, but yes, I know what you mean. it is silly, isn't it?

and the dollar bill (I am assuming that is what you are talking about) is actually made of a fabric. they do stuff to make it seem like paper... or so is the rumor.

in the near future, money will no longer be used. money won't be a physical thing. we'll have an amount of credit under our names, and we may use a handprint or retinal scanner to buy things.

Hmm. But based on your argument Rob, money needs to have intrinsic useful value. Gold is a straight-up useless metal to everyone but the semi-conductor and audio-component companies, that can use it for electroplated components. It's soft, not very durable, and is heavy. And still without much real worth.

Money is money because of TRUST. I don't know how it is in Canada, but down here in tech-friendly Raleigh NC, I rarely use paper currency at all. All of my transactions are electronic. Not even a piece of paper, just bytes of data! I pay my bills, get my paycheck, and order dinner, all via electronic means. Because I have trust in the backing of the currency system.

Money could be toothpicks - as long as people trusted in teh power of toothpicks...

Its a logical falacy actually. Money has value because people have faith in the value of money.

Our current monetary system was forumlated at the end of WWII, though the US didn't drop the Gold standard. Instead of being a 'federal reserve note' dollars were 'gold reserve notes'... meaning you could 'techinically' cash in your dolalrs for gold. When a recession hit in the 70's, the US kindly asked nations not to cash in thier currency, since we didn't have the gold to back up its value. Who else but GOOD OLD FRANCE decided "HunghHungh! Ve are ze French! Let us crash ze stupid American's economy by trying to cash our dollars! HunghHunghHungh! Hey, is this my snail or yours Pierre?" And that is another reason why France sucks.

France- undermining American interests since we saved their helpless frog asses for the second time in a century.
France is like that guy who nobody really likes, but tries to hang out with the group for the sole purpose of feeling important. And then he'll ask for a couple bucks to help pay, since he's short, but continues insulting you after you've helped him for the nth time.
America is the greatest, freest, and most decent society in exsistence. This country, once an experiment unique in the world, is not the last best hope for the world. History will view America as a great gift to the world.

Money is simply an abstraction that makes it easier to trade goods and services. Most things that have actual value are too difficult to carry around.

Not to mention that if you didn't have one standard currency, you'd have to define exchange rates between every thing and every other thing - e.g., if you had some pretzels and wanted to trade them for a soda, but didn't want to get ripped off, you'd have to have some preconceived exchange rate between pretzels and soda, which you wouldn't necessarily have if you'd gotten your pretzels by any means other than soda<->pretzel bartering.

Compare with having a standard currency. If you bought your pretzels for $1.00, and you want to trade half of them for a soda whose market value is about $0.50, you know that's a fair deal. See how much simpler money makes things? Just don't think about it too hard and it works fine. :D

I find paper and new coin money idiotic as well, but we are close enough to the electronic money era that it won't matter much longer.

I think when we do the all electronic money thing, we should all have actual piles of gold with our names on them (or maybe numbers, you understand though) in our towns, or any place you like, and once in a while, you can go look at your gold, silver, diamonds, rubies, and fun stuff and we'll all feel rich looking at our treasure that we won't mind working the stupid jobs we get stuck in.

"I'll trade you this ruby for your Carol bag. Ok 2, but thats my final offer. Yay, I got a good bag"

LMAO! That's pretty funny. But I do like the gold idea. But that would, IMHO, would bring about massive amounts of crime centralized on that area.

And there is new coin money?

A dollar isn't really worth a dollar anyway, becasue it takes like $.80 or something around there to make a whole dollar bill. The things you learn when you vist the national treasury.

Barter was to inconvenient so money has replaced it. Yes you might think its stupid that a piece of paper has a value but to bad. Thats the value for working or whateva else. And if you think paper and coins having value is stupid well its no different than electronic money. Anyway we have electronic money now in fhe form of eftpos only thing is you shouldnt have to pay transaction cost etc so you could use it just like money now.

I'm pretty sure most of the world does not like the United States very much. America is like that cocky preppy rich boy who thinks he's the shit, which is enough to convince some weak minded people to follow him, while the majority see how much of a jackass he is.

Hey Jammer, you seem pretty fucking cocky and arrogant yourself, you must be from here.

Dude, you are so frighteningly right.. and what's worse is that we (the US) are like the big rich family in the small town. If you go against us, you will have living hell come on you. Man... Our country had good founding principles... it turned to crap recently though...

I can't think of anything to say to bash the US prez... How odd...

"just the moron president"

I'm freakin sick of people always bashing president bush. Whats has he done? ok u may not like him or his party but hes your president for god's sake. You stiil need to respect him because he is your leader and the leader of the most awesome and free cuntries on the planet.

"just the moron president" is a little dramatic for a person as intelligent and powerful as Bush.
There is always a bigger trick.

Hey, you don't NEED to respect anyone if they do things and have morals which you do not respect. I'm sick of people telling me I need to respect him because he's the president. I don't believe in people being better than others and more important, I'll respect him when he does something I deem worthy of my respect.

I don't have respect for ANYBODY UNLESS they are intelligent or very talented in a certain area and can earn my respect. Part of my every day ritual is to get to Miss Alfords class, go over to her desk, and read today's "Bushism" from her calendar and see the stupid president today.

"They misunderestimated me"

Oh, and Mega, what I meant by new coin money was not little gold, silver, nickel and copper coins, this new crap where pennys are more nickel than nickels.

should be 5 copper bits per nickel bit, than tiny flat pieces of silver for dimes, than quarters than half dollars, then silver and gold dollars (different sizes of course)
