are you playing with other people, cos this is the main thing that will help you progress. If there are more experienced players where you are then they can teach you it all in person and can show you how to do different things. It's also a lot more enjoyable with others. The notation you'll probably get naturally as you read it more and more, but I'll leave that to someone else
Practice makes perfect - it's as simple as that

I used to live a couple hours from Sioux Falls (I lived in Morris, MN), and you're right - you're probably not going to find anyone to play with, unless you convert some hackers into proto-footbaggers. But maybe on weekends you could travel to a city with a footbag scene (I know there are some kickers in the Twin Cities, but that might be kind of a trek).
I can totally relate to your frustration with the notation and with the learning curve of the sport. I'm still a newb with the notation & move names, even after kicking with experienced players for a couple years. I'd suggest the Anz trick tips rather than a written out move list - start with the beginner stuff, work on mastering one move at a time and try not to worry about what the names are, just memorize the motions.
On the playing for a month & can't figure it out thing - you have to give yourself more time. I started drilling heavily by myself last summer, and it was probably three or four months before I noticed minimal improvement. You just have to be patient, keep working on the fundamentals all the time, and do whatever you find that works for you to avoid getting discouraged.

This thread will probably help get you going in the right direction:

Overall, I'd say a month is the standard amount of time it takes to fully plunge into this sport. I remember that I couldn't make my ankle bend the correct way for a clipper delay until the first month passed. This sport is one that is difficult to get into but once you begin learning a couple basic sets and a few basic tricks you can combine them and each new technique you learn later on adds an exponential number of new possibilities. You'll get there with just a little time.
