Bone on top of the foot...

Post by Lee »

I'm not sure what it's called, but the bone on the top of my right foot is killing me. It's been hurting for about a week and a half, and I've iced it. Is there any special remedies for this kind of injury?

(I couldn't find a post about the top of the foot)

well, you'll need to be more specific, because there are alot of bones on the top of the foot: Navicular, cuboid, lateral cuniform, medial cuneform, intermediate cuniform, 5 metatarsals, and 14 phalanges. also helps to say what type of pain, when the pain occurs, how often the pain occurs, duration of pain, and the specific location. just saying "the top of my foot hurts" isn't very descriptive.

he means that large, long bone that is connected with the big toe.

lee, have you been wearing some different shoes than what you're used to? did you kick anything hard? do you not know what caused the pain?

okay, that's your first metatarsal, also called the instep. impact can cause pain in the area, as its fairly sensitive to downward pressure when the foot is planted. another common cause of pain in this area is "lace bite". lace bite is caused by over tightening you shoe/skate/boot laces. the laces cut off circulation, irritate, and put alot of pressure on the tendons of the muscles extensor hallucis longus and extensor hallucis brevis, which are muscles involved in bringing the toe upwards, like in doing a toes stall. as holly said, it can be caused by using new footwear, and it is a gradual process that builds over time. often we can see inflamation of the tendons, making them sensitive to touch and sore during contraction of the muscles. Best thing to do is stop the irritation; so stop kicking for a bit. when you don't have to wear shoes, don't wear them. when you are wearing shoes, keep the laces a bit looser so you aren't strangling the tendons. some times the pain will disappear spontaneously as you body and tendons adapt to the presure, but if it has happened suddenly it likely won't accomodate, and time off will be needed. and, following with the treatemnt suggestions i have been giving out lately: rest, ice, elevation. in this instance, compression might not be a good idea.
a suggestiong given to me by a hockey player friend of mine who used to suffer lace bite alot was to switch to fat laces. the skinnier laces provide smaller surface areas for for the distribution of pressure, cutting into the foot more. wider laces distribute the same force over a wider area, and , in theory, wouldn't cause the same type of irritation. I haven't tested this or heard of any tests, but my friend claimed it worked for him. always a thought...

It only hurts when I walk and lift my toes.
It's almost like a pulled pain, or stressed like I've just worked out.
It seems to be getting better, I haven't shred much and I'm walking on it as little as possible.
I don't remember what I did, but it's not the shoes deal.
My shoes are always fairly loose.
I'll keep off it for a while.
This stinks, nothing's put me out like this.

Thanks.

You say it only hurts when you lift your toes. This indicates the tendons on the top of your foot are not getting enough nutrients. The best wholistic remedy for this involves 3 oranges and a banana. More specifically the peels of those fruits. What you want to do is boil all the peels from those 4 fruits in 4 cups of water for 15 minutes. Then, you want to draw a hot bath and right before you get in, add the boiled water with the peels to the bath. The atomic structure of the peeled fruit starts a chain reaction in the bath water changing its chemical properties from the basic to the slightly more acidic. When this water soaks into your skin, your skin absorbs some of the nutrients of the enhanced bathwater and passes them on to the afflicted area. What this means for your foot isnt instant remedy, but if you combine this technique with toe raises and ankle rolls you will have a very fruity.. I mean wholistically good recovery
! Good Luck!

Your next task: Go to the bathroom.
Wash your face.
Put your shoulders hunched upwards.
Look really, really slowly upwards towards the mirror like in the movies
And slap yourself in the face.
With your game face on.
And go shred with jim.
It'll work, trust me.
