How to make INSTANT snow

This is a family tradition for me at Christmas time.
It sounds ridiculous, and lots of people in the U.S.A. and warmer countries will probably not believe this, and that's cool, because I laughed when I first heard it too, but it's true. We do this every year.

What you need:
1) boiling water (it HAS to be boiling water, like, from a kettle or pot. It cannot be extremely hot water from a sink -- that won't work.
2) a mug, or something of equal size to hold water.
3) an outdoors temperature of at least about -25 celcius

Instructions:
1) Boil water
2) IMMEDIATELY fill mug and run outside (amount of water is kind of dependant on outdoors temperature -- the colder it is, the more full you can fill your mug; if it isn't cold enough (like bare-minimum -25), not all of your water may not turn into snow.
3) Throw water from mug as high as you can, and away from people
4) Ta da! The water will fall to the ground as snow

What the junk, -25 degrees C??? It's like 32 degrees F right now with 20 degree wind chill and I am freeezing!

I have video, but I've put it on a video DVD, and don't know how to capture easily from that. Lemme know and I'll post video. (My camcorder died, so I can't make a new video.)

It gets as cold as -50 celcius here...
That's close to the same in fahrenheit (a bit "colder").

Just guessing here, but I'd imagine that it has something to do with a phase change. That is, maybe the water has to partly turn to steam as it freezes in order to become snow rather than to just fall to the ground as water or frozen water. I'd guess that the water has to mix with alot of air to instantly freeze, and to become less dense and lighter than just frozen drops of water. And what better way to mix with alot of air than for the water to be just about on the verge of becoming a gas itself?

Like, I'd like to try this too, but not at the cost of freezing my toes off. It would be hard to shred without toes...

Good ole winterpeg. Is it already approaching -25 there? We just got our first snow here in GTAland a couple days ago, but the temp is more like -3 or -4. Nonetheless, when it get's colder I'm SO doing this. Wicked "magic" trick.

boiling water freezes quicker than cold water because it doesnt have air bubbles.

And here I was deciding where to move in Canada, or moving to Canada at all. Although, making your own snow sounds so wickedly fun!

I need to develop some blubber and an extra layer of skin if I want to make Canada my new stomping ground.
