Why does the term Zooming exist

Post by Matt K »

To my knowledge, this is the only case in our sport where we've named a particular linking of 2 concepts - why?

Why not call osis>stepping, or osis>ducking something different?

Do people not consider Osis to be a real trick, so that they say "I hit zooming blender" as a new trick, rather than "I hit osis>spender" as a new link?

No one's going to tell you that double down>nuclear is a single concept, why should osis>spinning be treated any differently?

zooming clipper is not a trick, zooming only refers to the fact that you spin from an osis.
zooming clipper would by gyro or spin? it does'nt make sense.

zooming should'nt be used to describe links neither tricks. just a concept.

zooming clipper = spining clipper

Zooming ss clipper = gyro clipper

Spining = spining far "something"
Gyro = Spining near "something"

NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY YOU CANT TAKE AWAY ZOOMING!

to answer the question posed by the topic...

the term zooming exists because sam colclough used to like to come up with catchy names for footbag concepts, and that was one of them that caught on.

I never use the term zooming and agree with the sentiment of Matt K. There is never an appropriate time to use the term, because if you ever said; "I hit mobius to zooming whirl," it would always mean exactly the same as saying "I hit mobius to spinning whirl." It's a useless term, and if people like the word "zooming" they should have invented something new to use it for.

I've hit both tricks a number of times and I should say that zooming and spinning blenders lookand feel rather differently..like if their were totally unrelated tricks which is technically not the case. Whenever I hit a zooming blender my partner goes "Wow" just because he can distinguish between the two. I also apply my rule to gyro clippers, gyro whirls/blenders since they all look/and feel different from their original versions. These are my reasons why zooming concept exists. :)

you could say the same about butterfly and reverse whirl.

but why argue it.

reverse whirl is just a different way to dex the bag but essentially when it comes down to it it's the same thing. They feel very differently but are the same thing.

Sergey's little explanation for zooming there didn't make sense to me.

I think what Matt is getting at is since there are no names for 'concepts' like osis>stepping or osis>ducking (which are both harder than without the osis beforehand) why should there be a name for osis>spinning?

Technically, a good zoom is supposed to stop in clipper position before you start the spin, so a zoom should relly feel no different than a spin anyways. I'm not saying I do it this way, just that you're supposed to (right?).

Anyways, I don't care if zooming stays or not. It obviouly will, but it doesn't bother me and I rarely say it except when I'm trying to piss off Matt.

I just hope it doesn't start a trend of "transition" naming.

I'm part of the "it's totally gratuitous and unnecessary" line of thinking. I have never used or needed to use the term zooming in regards to footbag.

ahhh yes nameing. It has been a while since this topic has come up and since I have been doing a bit of reading up on linguistics I feel like commenting.
Language is NOT fixed, it evolves and grows as needed by its users. Same with footbag nomenclature. All that is needed is something that Matt mentioned in his first post in this thread, it has to catch on.
If i start calling blurry whirl "mincemeat" it doesn't mean anything. If every one in my crew starts calling it mincemeat than thats a little something. If I post like a mofo all over the forms and plug it at tourneys and get tons of people calling blurrywhirl mincemeat, than gosh darn it stepping paradox whirl IS mincemeat!!!
As long as a word conjures up an image of a footbag movement than that is the name. You don't need to invent the trick, or even hit the trick. you just need to be inventive or influential enough to get fellow shredders to understand what you mean when you say your footslang.
Does it matter that Big Add or Torch will have no idea what you are talking about??? well thats for you to decide but I am one who believes that as long as there is communication you can call anything anything.

long story short: do you know what zooming means? yes. end of story 8)

Maybe I am weird but I mention zooming alot when talking about footbag stuff. Or like, I'll give props and say 'way to zoom that mobe' because it's something hard and noteworthy.

It's just a name for a concept, who gives a shit really? It calls attention to something hard you did, I see nothing wrong with that.

I love zooming! :)

The term zoom has changed a bit over the years. When I was shredding early on (8 years ago), zooming was a bad thing. Considered bad form.

To my limited knowledge a zoom was a spinning set where you pulled your foot in the direction of the spin. Kinda like a slurry set. In a slurry set you pull your leg through before you actually clear the dex.

Today it sounds like it is just a spin from an osis. OK ;)

Maybe it's a regional thing, but I never heard slurry spinning referred to as zooming. I always heard that referred to as "froggy." Many people do their zooms kind of froggy, so that might explain misuse of the term back then.

Chuck Norris likes the term zooming. Nobody's been brave enough to tell him it's not necessary.

Yeah Ken I have never heard of froggy. But I went out of my way to make sure that my spins were set then spin so no one would call ZOOM on me. LOL

Kinda funny how terms get used. Like Dyno starting out as a symple blender.

I will make sure in the future not to frog my spins.

dyno was a gyro reverse swirl.

I never heard of froggy, might be a regional thing.

I've seen some slurry spin sets, but I see more people not finishing osis tricks. Some people try to pass it off as a frigid osis, but they aren't really hitting that trick either. Sloppy sets and infinished tricks all blend together. Still, it looks cool when people hit spinning paradox blenders back to back, with out spinning at all.
